  • Google's Pixel series has a big problem that it needs to address soon as other smartphone makers have their answers to Google's best features. The Pixel 8 Pro 6 months later is a harder sell than ever before. Here's why.

With Google leasing its AI LLM to Samsung, the advantage of Google software is decreasing. So, with many cameras being good enough for most users, what is Google selling with the Pixel? Obviously, loyal fans like me just prefer the Pixel, but I have to agree, I would be happy with many alternatives and may even have a better experience.

While it would be good if they did, I imagine the reason they don’t is because those services are highly privacy invasive and can’t be allowed in many regions.

I agree but in Australia I had call screening and people just hung up because the google voice sounds like a robot. I think it sounds better in America. Hold for me again companies hung up too. Great ideas but they fell flat for me. Magic eraser and best shot was pretty useless in real life uses. I now use an iPhone 15 pro max for work which pretty much means I’ve moved to iPhone. I’ve got my pixel 8 pro still here. Now playing and assistant voice typing are fantastic pixel advantages I miss but that’s pretty much it. I truly hope pixel does something good with the pixel 10 so I can come back to the fold

The fact that Samsung and Oneplus have "caught up" is a good thing in the phone space. It means that there is more competition which is always better for the consumer. The only issue I see with the pixel line is that Google has a bit of an issue with how to spread out the features as the hardware is not so much the focus compared to the snapdragon. The pixel 9 will be an iterative upgrade from the 8 and I think that people are over-hyping the little that is to come. Personally I have been waiting on the 9 as currently I'm on a 6 Pro with a custom rom and still pretty happy with it but ready for something new.

Made by Samsung yes, but not a rebrand though. Based on it, but has a diferent architecture and NPU. For example, the first generation of the Tensor is between Exynos 990 ans 2100 due to the architecture configuration, which makes it different from either of them.

Google is still ahead of every phone manufacturers in terms of AI, Samsung does have some appealing features on paper but their live translate is a downgrade compared to Pixel's. Also the 7 years of upgrade promise, Outside US Samsung doesn't give you monthly updates on time like Google does. While Oneplus:s 4 years of update promise is good, it is not an impressive feat compared to 7 years from Google (If they keep their promise). Google has always been a software company and comparing it's hardware to companies that have been building phones for decades felt a little unfair, yet they're catching up. All I'm trying to say is Google still offers one of the best and easy to use software experiences while still being hundreds of dollars cheaper than the flagship offering from Apple and Samsung.

@@switex8286 I’m also a light user. Mostly web browsing/Googling and UA-cam. I don’t use social media. I do occasionally use GPS navigation. In my day to day life, the Pixel 8 is a two day phone for me. I get, on average, about six hours of screen on time between charges. But I’ve gotten up to 7 and 8 hours before. I recently went on a trip that involved heavy Googling/navigation and I never ran out the battery before I got to the hotel.
The one time the battery life did seem to falter was on an out-of-country trip a few months ago. Different trip than the one mentioned in the previous paragraph. I used Google Maps for hours a day and took a ton of photos. I’m talking like 100 photos and videos a day or more. I’d get like 4 hours of screen on time. Truly bad. But, it’s possible that any phone would have gotten bad battery in that scenario. It was probably the most taxing real-world use case for a phone. The camera uses a ton of battery.
I don’t want to scare you off. I’m just letting you know the good and the bad. I hope this has been helpful for you. Good thing is, there’s a two week return policy if you don’t like it (or a month in other countries I think). Please let me know if I can answer anything else for you.

Currently using the galaxy s22 ultra and it is a powerhouse and something i can always rely on. Doesn't matter what i put it through it just handles it and the battery life is still very good as a 2.5yo flagship. But the newer software updates and changes , specially the removal of features from the settings and the goodlock app have really been a dealer breaker as i used them heavily to make it the phone my own.
Now that i see it, i dont really like the ui anymore and it's just more complicated.

I'll be staying with the Pixel series vs Samsung for the foreseeable future.
    1) Samsung adding duplicates of Android/Google features on top of the existing software is just a waste of space and performance.
    2) Samsung's "UI" is complete crap.
    3) Any real performance difference doesn't make much difference in day to day usage. All high end phones are more than powerful enough.
    4) Google's Pixel is the only phone that has the camera in a correct orientation. Laying your phone down and having it tilt due to off-center camera's is stupid.
Agree or disagree, all these top tier phones are more than anyone needs so you can go with whatever you like.

Not to mention the about the stupid bugs that occur after updating a pixel phone. Mkbhd had made a whole video about this. OneUI imo is the most feature rich and practical UI out there especially with secure folder and app cloning. Also don't forget the super useful Bixby routines. I'm a college student and Bixby routine does wonders. For example, I set up a routine where my phone automatically goes silent mode as soon as I enter lecture building or library. There are many other countless features and customizations that no other UI offers. For me, it's impossible to leave OneUI

Also, where I live, in India pixel phones are complete garbage cuz they're super expensive for what they offer. It is above 1000$ and service over here is crap. Also as India mostly has tropical weather, the chappy tensor chips always drain a lot and overheat. The 5g reception is horrible. It's the same problem with all chipsets made in samsung Foundry including their exynos. Simply put, Snapdragon is much better and until google uses sdg or improves their exynos, these phones have nothing good in them except their cameras with software magic. @@06ek I've used OnePlus and like them. Oppo and Xaiomi are great too. Pixels work great in the USA. For me a phone has to have an unmolested UI as close to stock android as possible, and a flat screen (no curved edges). Everything else is negotiable.

@@06ekI am from India too and when I bought a pixel device it had issues right out of the box and with every update it was getting worse. Heating, performance throttle, below average battery, worst customer support, very less to no resell value you name it Pixel has it all.
Unless these issues are fixed I am not even thinking of buying one. You will only see Pixel phones in the hand of people who are rich or don't know what other brands has to offer or don't know how bad the pixel phones are.
No wonder OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Samsung are rulling Indian market. Pixel can never beat such competition from other brands.

If I could find a good UK price for the Oppo Find 7 Ultra, obviously I would go for that, or, of course, the Vivo X100 Pro, they seem to be several rungs above the competition for camera, maybe even the Xiaomi 14 Ultra but that I watched a long side by side video with the 14 Ultra against the Pixel and was astonished to see the Pixel more or less held its own in a lot of shots and in some was arguably better (yay computational photography holding it's own, kind of, against larger sensor size).
I think Google need to reduce the price of the 8 and the 8 Pro, though, because they are being left out of so many people's shortlists because of general performance and videographers, etc, are looking for improved processor grunt to cope with Motioncam, etc, to avoid dropped frames.
It's funny, it's feels like it has been around for years, for some reason!

I think Google is doing what Apple is doing with the long term plan for in-house silicon.
Imo, the best thing with the pixel is the camera and the very clean software (no bloat). The pixel is only going to get better with the rumours of full custom silicon with Pixel 10.
At the end of the day, I still prefer the pixel over the Samsung. The ease of use and clean UI makes it such a joy to use daily.

As a non biased , non pixel 8 pro fan boy and owner , certainly the hardware is ok , but in some areas it is a tad behind other brands , , my reason for buying the 8 pro in the first place was the photo editing software which i think is a bit better than other brands.
General impressions of the phone .....
A good percentage of the time it is very snappy in day to day operations, and i like that.
There are occasions however where you can see clearly it just doesn't have the horsepower of some other brand phones.
For example, when the pixel has to upload photos to google and have them processed which takes time, where other brand phones can do the same on device in a quarter of the time.
Fortunately I'm not taking pics every day , but just saying.
Another area i think they could improve the hardware, the finger print sensor and the face id .
On my unit , the finger print sensor is very lethargic and inconsistent only working when it feels like it, face id sometimes is quiet good when the conditions and light is adequate , in poor light it is not good , in darkness it is utterly useless.
And this has made me enable the pin pattern which a lot of the time i end up using.
Another observation on the face id sensor, it appears to not have the same field of view as my iphone face ID which just works like a beauty 99.9999% of the time.
I hate the keyboard on the pixel 8 pro , i have large ish hands and fingers , it just feels awful to use , and to add to that , error correction seems to suck , also , on my galaxy note and iPhone keyboards , both have the track pad function on to the keyboard that works well with the iphone being the tops in ooeration .
As you mentioned the pixel pics are often very good , but often about on par wi the h other brand camer as s , and some areas like low light when the camera is on auto , white balance is just piss poor.
I like the spam detection on the pixel , it has a nice screen and decent speakers( not the best on the market though).
I think it's still a pretty good phone despite its eeak areas , if i had to only make one choice I'd still pick the big iPhone, but Google is on the right track imo , , , the flat screen is nice and this is the first time a Google phone has been in my hand since the Nexus 6P.

iPhone 14 - i don't like iOS, currently using 12 mini and not a big fan.
Zenfone 10 - 2 years of updates, bruh
Samsung S24 - doesn't have goddamn macro mode
Pixel 8 - the best candidate so far, just lack of optical zoom hurts but still, I prefer to have a macro mode.

Tbh i don't really care anymore about raw performance, sure there are phones in this price range that are faster but right now on the Android side of things i think the pixel 8 pro especially with the video boost feature is the best camera experience rn period. Also i think the difference in photo & video quality is actually quite big compared to the OnePlus, sure not as much as "the old days" so to speak but that's where we at right now. And for me the pixel camera makes that suttle difference between "almost dslr like" & "this is definitely shot on a phone" kind of quality

I think above all else, for me personally and I'm sure many other Pixel loyalists would agree, is the Pixel experience whcih in some ways is easy to quantify and more subjective in others. The Call Screen features for me, the best AOD of any phone on the market, the text to speech speed and accuracy, the haptics, these features don't get talked about or praised enough, instead tech reviewers focus on the obvious things like cameras and general performance which for me has never been lacking from fhe Pixel 6 then 7 Pro and now 8 Pro.
Google doing their own thing though with chipsets, I'm sure will see thr fruits of that more especially next year as Google will be designing it from top to bottom and likely using TSMC's 3nm process so we could see that pay off more.

    No one talks about this:
The biggest issue with AI phones is the lack of future software updates. If new generation features, not hardware-related, are not added to my Pixel 8, it becomes a major deterrent for purchasing a new one. This is where the limitations of software AI phones become evident.

  • @deyeatdapoopoo7582

Honestly the biggest problem with it is that it's just not worth the hefty premium over the regular Pixel 8 for 99% of users and the Pixel 8 itself is not worth the premium over the 7A for 95% of users. The user experience is much the same between all 3 for the overwhelming majority of things people use phones for.
Unless you need the bigger display, the AI features or more than 128GB it makes more sense to get the 7A for $350 and if you want a premium device and/or more storage it makes sense more sense to get the regular Pixel 8 for $550-600. Getting a telephoto lens, bigger display and a "pro" camera shooting mode pretty much no one is going to use is not worth an additional $250 for the overwhelming majority of people and I say that as a tech enthusiast.
