      I agree, like “depending on”, “fluent” I was practicing saying those & writing them down & kept rewinding to catch them saying the words in the conversation.

    Hola Señor Shun! I'm in Japan now, I was in Osaka a few days ago, and now I'm near Shirahama, Wakayama-ken. Cloudy, hot, and very humid today, but we enjoyed sashimi and sushi at Toretore Ichiba, and now I'm studying Japanese thanks to your very good youtube channel. Thank you for teaching us new techniques to make new friends in Japan, but my wife will not be so happy about that😂.

    字幕がちょっと間違うかな? I am reading the subtitles to make sure I am hearing correctly but noticed that the way the subtitles are written, @6:57 「なにかしてあげたいな~」とおもうんですけど。I think would be written better that way and easier to understand that she is expressing an internal thought more than direct conversation. It's probably worth spelling out that the valence of 友達 here appears to be a kind of extrovert-level friend: someone to chat lightly with, get a coffee with and see once every few months. We're probably not talking introvert-level blood brothers here, someone you see day after day, confide in implicitly and would do anything for. I believe Polish speakers have a similar problem when trying to gauge English "friend" vs Polish znajomy/przyjaciel.

    Hola! It’s wwsakbeh! I had to create a new account. Good video. To be honest though, these people did not convince me at all that Japanese people want to speak with non-Japanese people, let alone make friends with them. The guy seemed cool enough but when one has in mind, as he does, who should talk to whom first, well, that not only blocks the flow of communication but is also the sign of a hidden agenda. He expressed that one of his primary goals in connecting with foreigners is to learn English. That is not authentic conversing or friendship. It’s benefiting from a situation. I think westerners enjoy conversation as an end in itself, divested of any gain or benefit. As for shy, maybe, but more so very hierarchical; I can observe that even among middle and high school boys. (To say nothing on that point about among adults!). To be fair though, the language barrier plays a huge part; but I nevertheless think it’s more about a cultural mindset. While the girls who studied in Mexico weren’t exactly open minded, they did at least express that they wanted to give back because of what they had learned from their experiences. If their kind of mindset continues to evolve, it would be a good thing for connecting westerners and Japanese. Sorry that my views come off strong. And thanks as always for your work.

    • @user-zn3pe9ch5l
      @user-zn3pe9ch5l Місяць тому +3

      Fully agree. The concept of friendship in Japan is very different from other countries, whether they interact with foreigners or between themselves. There is always a goal or a transactional element. « Friendship » is also much more prevalent through group events such as those of various associations (sports, universities, hobbies, work…). The pleasure to interact with a single person just because there is a good connection and to mutually discover things is very rare. Maybe because this is a culture of tatemae where you keep things for you, including with close family members. It’s one of the most disconcerting things to adapt to life in Japan for foreigners I think…

      @@user-zn3pe9ch5l Yeah. The story I often hear is that a foreigner thought they've found a real new friend and even after a long time of spending time together they discover it was just for learning English or they were just filling a duty at a workplace or university. Pretty harsh tbh and I hope people start becoming more aware of this.
