Great video. I've been thinking about taking an open position with the company located in Macon and we have been searching youtube for videos on the area and trying to figure out the best part of town to live. Might pull my RV down an stay for a week at the campsite you showed at the beginning of the video and check out the area. Thanks again for the great video!!!!
When looking check out North Macon. Very nice, but a bit on the pricey side. Also nice is the lower part of the county west of I475 from Eisenhower Pkwy past Harley Bridge Rd. The area is often referred to as Lower Bibb County or LBC. Nice area. A little rural. Good folks out there. Stay away from East Macon, Bloomfield and the Napier Ave area. As with any city there's good and bad. Lake Tobo is a nice spot. Safe travels.
I was born and raised in Macon, Georgia and I didn’t live too far from Mercer University. Yes I must see the Hayes House. I remember J.J. Newberry. I used to go to the city auditorium for famous singers would come. Omg, I bought my son here to visit but it was so rainy at the Ocmulgee reservation. I am proud to be part Native American Cherokee and Seminole. Oh thank you for links as I have family still in Macon and Atlanta. That grave stone and it says wife of Napier; I wonder if the Napier Avenue was named after him? I attended the Old A.L. Miller high school and my brother attended Lanier and after his graduation he went on to a college with military schooling. He later joined the Marines and he did very well and he later worked civilian NDT.
You must mention Amerson River Park, Macon's other Best Kept Secret! Such a beautiful, relaxing place to exercise, take a stroll, or enjoy the many beautiful views. The Rookery is Downtown Macon's most popular restaurant. You'll find a good number of quality places to eat downtown.
What? No Nuway hot dog? West Macon native here. I watched them build Lake Tobesofkee, land clearing and the dam construction. I played music all around Macon and middle Georgia in the late 50s and early 60s. Rubbed shoulders with Otis in the early days (under same agent) and played in Macon’s first recording studio (Mulberry Street) - all before the Allman Brothers came. Phil Walden was there, but pre-Capricorn and only a small time agent booking bands primarily for college and high school dances.
@@iLoveRVlife Hello!!! Had to comment on the video. You showed exactly where I grew up at especially the fort Hawkins tower and the ocmulgee national monument!!! The memories I have!!!
We are making a small "great water fall" 2k+ mile , 21 day loop from Mobile to Gatlinburg (Smokey Mtn Nat Park) , Asheville NC, Augusta Ga, Macon Ga, Bainbridge GA/Chattahoochee FL and home to Mobile. Macon has been our greatest surprize and our favorite city of the loop. 10 visits to Asheville would not equal one visit to Macon. Kimberly at the "Visit Macon--Information Center" on MLK Blvd was awesome. Her advice , coupled with your video, made Macon our most enjoyable city visit by far. Macon is a hidden gem indeed!!
Splendid and outstanding video Jerry! Lots and lots of great tourists venues for all to see in Macon Ga. I'm so glad you shared this with us out here in UA-cam land. Truly enjoyed this one Jerry! Stay safe and be blessed Jerry and Joan!
Thanks for the tour I really enjoyed it. Being a west coaster I have not seen a lot of the south a few short stop overs and the summer of 1959 I spent a month in TN and your UA-cam videos show a lot as I enjoy the history of the south. Thanks.
Thanks Norm. Macon is a bit unique. I wish time would have allowed me to cover more music history. So many many have came from here - Little Richard, Otis Redding, Randy Crawford, Allman Brothers, Ronnie Hammond (Atlanta Rhythm Section lead singer), Chuck Leavell (Stone's keyboards), Bill Berry (R.E.M.), Jason Alldean and a bunch more. I think there's something in the water:).
Incredible! Love- Love-Love the tour. That young lady is quite the speaker. I had no idea Macon was so great. I have driven thru it several times but have never stayed there. I will Stop for sure now! Thank you a "Wonderful Video". I have a Grandson that is in the Music business. Happy Travels. Hugs from Livonia, Michigan.
Thank you so much for sharing about Macon! I’m from Waycross and have visited Macon where some of my great grandparents were buried. I want to go back and check out the sites. Definitely want to check out the campground.
Nice job Jerry. I have spent many a nights in Macon during my working years, mostly during the mid '80s. I have been by the Big House and eaten at a restaurant the guys use to go too but I don't remember the name. One day several of us did a motorcycle ride to Macon and did an Allman Brothers tour also visiting the cemetery. At that time, they didn't have the fence around the graves. You really made it a place I would like to go back too.
I live in South Bibb County. I was watching one of your other videos and told my wife that that man is from around here somewhere. You got that Georgia accent. LOL.
Thanks Jerry for doing this video. I've lived in Middle Ga just south of Macon my whole life but even though I've heard of some of the sites you've shared I've never been to them or seen them. You've made me want to go touring Macon.
Thank you, Jerry. What a wonderful and historic place. Love these tours and the history of all that came before. What a wonderful place Hay House was and enjoyed the The Big House, although I wasn't a fan of the Allman Bros. Thanks again. Happy trails.
Thanks so much. I ran out of time for this video. I'll edit this week and release the entire Hay House tour. We booked a private tour and have so much more. Can't wait to share this one.
Very interesting vid, my wife and I visited the Big House a few years ago passing through the area. Looks like we missed some good camping, will have to go back and visit. Thank you for the vid.
So many trips heading to Florida from the Great White North over the years and skirting around Macon....that all is going to change thanks to this informative video....the campground is a must!
Hi Jody. Thus will be a fun stop. Book the campground early. Certain times of the year it can get a little busy. Try and get a lake view. They are some kinda pretty!
Nice video. Seems like my kind of place. My wife and I just recently upgraded from a travel trailer and gasser to a fifth wheel and a diesel in order to start ranging out farther from our home in Illinois. First trip coming up this weekend to Pigeon Forge Tn. Staying for a week at Riverbend campground. Heavily influenced by your video, which happens to be how I found your channel. I guess we will have to make it to Macon sometime looks like my wife would really enjoy the historic area and I can enjoy all the micro brews! Thanks again Jerry
Hi Todd. You can definitely stretch your legs now. You'll have a great time in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Make sure you go to the McCoy Hatfields show. We laughed to our face hurt. Also Caves Cove. Great tour and nature. Definitely stop in Macon as you head south. Spend a few days and some unique things to see. Jerry...
Awesome Jerry. We go past Macon twice a year on our travels between our East TN home and out Florida home. Never really thought to stop in Macon. Figured it was just a small version of Atlanta. We don’t like cities at all. We will check out Macon in April on our trek home to TN
Hi JR. Nothing like Atlanta. Judt take the bypass to the campground. I75 is a bit of a mess with all the construction, it you can see the sites with no problems. If you have time, stay a day or two. Much to see and all is close by. You'll have a great time.
You'll have a blast. Very laid back. This was a sample of some of my favorites. I ran into time constraints and couldn't fit everything in. There's so much more to see.
Thanks a bunch Valerie. We filmed so much, that I'll have a 2nd part next week. We were given a VIP tour of the Hay House. Amazing place. We'll have much of the private tour available from basement to the 7th floor widow's walk. Simply amazing 1855 building. Can't wait to share. Jerry...
My husband and I are planning on moving to Macon ga. This has to be one of the best videos I’ve seen thus far! Thankyou so much I’m even more excited to move there❤️ awesome video! New subscriber!
Thanks Linda. We travel in our RV many months out of a year. We always come back home. Macon is an interesting town. Much history and really nice downtown area. You may get a kick out of a recent video we created during some travel downtime ua-cam.com/video/RjWjmJyPlbU/v-deo.html Best wishes on you move.
Love your videos, Jerry. This may be one of your best yet! I'm looking forward to those grit fritters at Piedmont. My family is from Tifton so this area is very special to me. Thank you for posting this. We were in Perry last week at the FMCA convention, wish we could have seen you there.
Hi Andy. Thanks a bunch. Make the trip up when you get a chance. Really is a lot to see and do. We were going to FMCA, but we were getting ready to leave the area for a while and that t do list would not end. Hopefully we'll be in town next year.
Love this video of my current area of residence. I’ve been wanting to do a tour of Macon on video myself. Very informational about restaurants and fun things to do. Awesome stuff!
Thanks Nick. Downtown Macon is maturing as a destination. A number of new restaurants have popped up since this video and a new micro brewery opens on Plum St. late spring. Great to hear you enjoyed the video.
Jerry this video and the other one about Macon is great! Coincidently I have an upcoming business trip in late summer/early fall to Macon, and given that I've never been there (I'm from the Boston area), your videos will provide me some interesting places to visit in between my work project that week. Keep up the great work!
Haven't heard that part. The college later became a school. There is a beautiful Catholic church downtown with the beginnings in the late 1800s. The area was a growing railroad town and much influence for business from that period. Many religious institutions made an effort to establish a religious institutions from all walks. It was the deep south and I'm sure there were strong views from that period..
Finally a positive video on Macon.

That's great Audrey. Hope you get a chance to come back when the weather is better. Downtown is vibrant again, different, but still a fun place to go.
I think I would like to see the music places this Christmas. Looks very cool.

Do you know why Highway 41 is called Pio Nono Ave?
There was a Catholic college in Macon in the late 1800s. I think it's an Italian reference to the Pope at that time, maybe Pious 9th?
@@iLoveRVlife I've also heard it was because Pius IX recognized the sovereignty of the confederacy.
