Leather cover for gun a stock: how to make a cover that protects your stock and look good doing it.

  • I have wanted to make a cover for the stock of this flintlock for a while now. To protect it from getting any more dents or scratches. While this is a one off item custom made for a handmade firearm the same techniques can be used to make one similar for other types of firearms. I have seen these used on, and sometimes made these, for shotguns, muzzle-loaders, bolt and lever action rifles. Includes how I made the pattern. How I skive edges for a mitered seam and then how I stitch and finish that mitered seam. The dragon pattern was drawn to complement the dragon shaped brass side plate on this particular flintlock blunderbuss.

    Very nice work! I'd like to try that except I'd do it for my black powder shotgun and add loops for 6 shells on the one side.

      Thank you very much! Tool lists may not be very accurate because I have older tools and some of them are completely different sizes than what is available now. Some of them are ones I made for myself. What I used for this carving was: Swivel knife, A104, A114, B971, B203 that I modified with a checkering file, B936, F910, F976, F899, F900, the viener I altered to make the scale texture, and a modeling tool with large and small spoon tips.

      Where do you buy sheets of leather you made this with?

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  4 роки тому

      @Cecil Warren some from Tandy leather, but anything that I am planning to carve I like to use Hermann Oak I buy from Springfield leather. Another good vendor I have bought from is Weaver leather.

    This is a great work ! Thanks for sharing it. I even decided to make my own.
    Do you use linen or nylon thread ? Of what diameter ?

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  3 роки тому

      The thread I used on this is polyester. I do not know what diameter it is. Definitely bigger than the 346 nylon thread I use on my machine.

    Nice work!! Was that Scotch-bright you used to apply stain? Obviously it works but I'm surprised it's not too abrasive.

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  3 роки тому

      I use scraps of sheep skin also called shearling to apply most of the stains and finishes I use.

    Beautiful work 👌🏻 is it necessary to boil the leather when it’s finished? I’ve just made something similar for my SMLE.

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  3 роки тому +1

      Like most leather keep it clean and every now and then wipe it down with some neatsfoot oil. Maybe use something with wax in it like snow proof if you plan to be out in the rain much.

    What weight leather did you use in this ? Great work .

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  7 місяців тому +1

      It's about 9oz. It doesn't really need to be anywhere near that heavy. Probably 5-6oz or 6-7 would be my normal choice for a stock cover, but I went thicker for this one because it is on a 10 pound 4 bore monstrous blunderbuss.

    Awesome work. What tool did you use to transfer the image from the tracing paper to the leather

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  3 роки тому +1

      A modeling tool with a stylus point. Basically anything that comes to a point and is not sharp enough to cut through the tracing film will work.

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  6 місяців тому

      I used 8-10 oz for this one because it is on a heavy 10 pound flintlock. Most normal rifle stocks I would probably use 6-7 or 7-8 oz.
