The character development from a somewhat arrogant Jedi Padawan, outstanding Jedi knight, and badass crusading Jedi general to the wise old man who joins us in A New Hope is so much more fun watching (more than it already was) with all this to take into account you really understand the background, wisdom and capability of Obi Wan! One of if not my fav Star Wars character! Edit: Unfortunately we don’t see such complex and perfect development in the sequels 😔😒

I don't recall Obi-Wan being arrogant as a Padawan. From what I remember, he was simply ambitious and valued the teachings of the Jedi Council more than Qui-Gon's teachings.

Vetarlit Torf you’re right but from qui gons perspective of being a grey Jedi and only listening to the force then it may be; which is why i said “somewhat”. I don’t personally believe he is either but I bet you could make the argument that he is, however by the end of Phantom menace he’s certainly more wise than at the start 👍

@@matth2662 I get that, but I fail to see how that is arrogance because it sounds more like mere ignorance and because Obi-Wan never really saw Qui-Gon as a father figure like Anakin did.
Also, Qui-Gon wasn't a grey Jedi. He was just what a true Jedi is supposed to be; someone who listens to the Force, trusts their own instincts and uses the Jedi Code as guidelines rather than a sacred law.

Well if Obi-wan Kenobi was perfect right from the start wouldn’t he loose all his charm because absolutely perfect characters are hardly loved cause they don’t have any scope for development.
I don’t know if the Jedi apprentice and master & apprentice etc novels are cannon anymore or not but in those young Obi-wan was indeed somewhat arrogant. Regardless there was always charm in that. A unique charm that only Obi-wan Kenobi has in Star Wars Universe.
So personally I truly love the fact that he was arrogant when he was younger and his life experience taught him to be better. Makes him relatable.

The big thing about why I didn't kill Anakin was because I was a Jedi. Jedi are not allowed to kill unarmed opponents who have already been defeated, we don't believe in mercy killings became at the end of the day, it's still just killing.
And I think my choice to spare Anakin there directly contrasts similar instances throughout Episode III. Anakin disarmed Dooku and what did he do next? He killed him even though he knew that was not the Jedi way. Later Mace has Palpatine of the rope and what does he do? He decides to kill him, even with Anakin pleading that it's not the Jedi way. Mace Windu goes for the kill anyway.
And then there's me. I'm the first character in the entire movie to spare my opponent specifically because it *is* the Jedi way. My behaviors directly contrasts the previous two Jedi. I'm the first Jedi in this film that actually treated my opponent that way a Jedi should. That is what my choice to spare Anakin represents. Anakin killing and witnessing the killing of unarmed opponents is what led him to the Dark Side. My actions here are an example of behavior that contrasts with all the wrong that got us in this mess in the fist place.

Rey being a Kenobi would’ve been so poetic in terms of the larger Star Wars story. Kenobi gave everything for the Skywalkers and in the new trilogy Luke would’ve returned the favor and trained a Kenobi. It would’ve come full circle. Alas.. that’s not what we got

    • @Obi-Wan_Kenobi
      @Obi-Wan_Kenobi 4 роки тому +80

I would have had serious issues with that though. Rey being descended from me means I would have inexcusably broken the Jedi Code. Not only that, it means I would have kept it as secret and not taken responsibility for my kid. That that completely goes again what my character represents.
I am a Jedi through and through, I would never betray the code like that. Plus, it would make me no different from Anakin. The difference between us is that he could not control is attachments and desires whereas I rose above them to fulfill a high purpose to the Jedi Order.
I care about the Jedi Order more than anything, I would never have a kid period. Doing so would irreparably tarnish my character. I'd become a liar to the Jedi, a hypocrite to Anakin, a slave to my desires, and an absent father to a secret child. Rey being my granddaughter is impossible.

So y’all hating on this idea because it wouldn’t have made sense but it very well could have
Remember sattine right well let’s say her and kenobi got it on when he was a padawan she got pregnant and kept it a secret from him and out of fear he would later put two and two together she planned to keep the child a secret from pretty much everyone and this is when Almec the guy who joined maul in the clone wars offered his help but unbeknownst to her he just sold the kid off to some back water planet and this would be who her parents are
After all Star Wars had always been about 3 things
      1 the chosen one
      2 the skywalker family
3 the relationship of anakin and obi wan this way it continues that without ruining kenobi’s character

I love how strong Obi-Wan is. Some of his worst fears all come to life at the same time and he does NOT waver. For example, he loved Satine and did everything he could to save her. When he failed, he mourned, but he also let her go. It showcases the best of Obi-Wan and proves to us once again that he is the ultimate Jedi.
That letting go piece was what Anakin couldn’t master and what eventually led to his downfall. Had he been able to learn he’d have been unstoppable. As Kanan would later say, he would have had nothing left to fear. But Anakin’s fear got the upper hand. Obi-Wan’s didn’t.
Also Obi-Wan proves that the name of the game for a true Jedi isn’t complete detachment or denial of emotions: it’s control. Complete detachment is actually an easier path, born of fear of what those emotions may do to you. Then the only thing you end up attached to is yourself, which is the ultimate path towards the Dark Side. It’s why pride was such a problem as Yoda states right before the war broke out: a lot of Jedi had opted for complete detachment so that they didn’t have to face the darkness inside themselves. Not ALL Jedi fell into that trap; I’d actually say that most Jedi featured in the Clone Wars show had a pretty good handle on this concept. You can have strong relationships and bonds, but when the time comes, there’s nothing you can do but let go. Obi-Wan modeled this perfectly time and time again. He cared deeply while also being able to see the bigger picture. He fought the Dark Side and won. He failed sometimes but always got back up. He’s an example for us all.

When talking about Obi wan leaving Anakin on Mustafar apart from stating the things we said in the video, we also have to consider that Obi-Wan can't kill Anakin. He said it to Yoda and he proved it in both of their duels. He can't not because he's not as strong but because hes like his brother and he loved him. Now one can say killing him would be more merciful than leaving him to burn. But it was already hard for him to hurt him. Imagine how harder it would be to finish him. You can see his hesitation on attacking him critically during the Mustafar duel.

I like how he was meant to do great things before the phantom menace, but then he "died", lost everything, worked to get it back and almost succeeded. Whenever he was on the screen in TCW, I found myself rooting for him over the Jedi. Does his make him the best Star Wars character? Well if we are looking at the roles the characters actually play in the story, I believe the answer is a simple yes. However, there is more to it than that to be the best character of a story. A good character is one you fully understand and know, and although I believe Obi Wan Kenobi is a great character who's purpose in the story was written and executed perfectly, I do not rank him as THE best character of Star Wars, but is still pretty awesome. dmitri Strelec that is a very difficult question. Although, my top 5 favorite Star Wars characters in no particular order are: Obi Wan, Anakin/Vader, Luke, Ashoka, and CT-7576 . These are my personal favorite characters but if I had to say which one was my favorite I don't think I could. However, if there is one character who represents Star Wars to me more than any other Character it would be Anakin/Vader. To me, the entire Star Wars Saga all revolves around the story of Anakin Skywalker. The Sequels overlooked this important aspect which was the main reason for my distaste of the Sequels.

I agree, for me it's either obi wan, or Ahsoka depending on my mood, but I'll usually give obi wan the high ground, because to me, he is the definition not giving up, even considering he had a crap life, han solo, and a few others are also pretty close, I'm not a fan of the sequels and there characters because I feel they basically retcon the other two trilogies, they were just made for money to me as an add on, with no real story purpose, while the others actually are made for a story,

A hero’s journey, Palpatine, Kenobi, Anakin, Luke. Cyclically, they completed their journeys to balance each other out, with the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ appearing one after the other. Maybe that would have been Qui gon’s fate had he not died since he was the one to first be interested in Anakin as an apprentice if I remember right, so when he was killed Kenobi took his place. I think there must be something to this since George was mentored by Joseph Campbell and he teaches about those archetypes of heroes, villains and mentors. Palpatine and Kenobi balance each other out as mentors and their students then as well, Anakin and Luke, as the opposite ends of the spectrum of the Force. Since it’s all so intertwined maybe there was somewhere a plan for Kenobi to be Palpatine’s son, so maybe Ray is his daughter since as far as I know she’s Palpatine’s granddaughter and not much more is explained. But I think you have to view SW in the way of patterns and mythological story telling because that’s what it was based on and why many find it so appealing- Star Wars is every fan’s hero journey and Obi the perfect mentor.

Kenobi is my all time favorite character. He will always be because of his story, his very character, and most of all: his very human flaws. He is a true Jedi, more than any other with the exception of Luke up until the sequel trilogy.
His love and compassion for others, wit and charm, and desire to serve as a Jedi of the Republic made me cheer for him when he won, and cry for him when he lost. The most heart wrenching for me, was when he lost Satine. Someone that he said he'd leave the Jedi Order for; that's a big deal for someone who's devoted to being a Jedi. No, not just a Jedi.
Obi-Wan Kenobi, the true Jedi Master.
As for my vote, it's probably Darth Pelagius (Lets mix it up a bit with some EU villains.)
If you are wanting to stick closer to canon, I suppose my vote will be Asajj Ventress.

Hello Thor Skywalker and followers. I hope you are all in good spirits. Looks like I’ve been called out to defend my grade for Kenobi being an F. This will be a long reply, but only covers a portion of why I think Kenobi is an F character. And just to add clarity, I love Kenobi as played by Sir Alec Guinness, and love Kenobi as played by Ewan McGregor, and love Kenobi as voiced by James Arnold Taylor…
In A New Hope, Kenobi wants to spark Luke’s interest in becoming a Jedi; go to Alderan, help save the princess, and all that. We don’t know why, as first time movie watchers we don’t know why, just as Luke doesn’t know why either. But examining everything after seeing both the OT and the PT, regardless which order you view those six films, isn’t Obi-Wan playing a dangerous game by fabricating Uncle Owen’s disapproval of Anakin leaving Tatooine? “Your uncle didn’t hold the same ideals as your father, felt he should have stayed here, not gotten involved” Assuming, during that moment when he says that to Luke, Kenobi doesn’t somehow know Owen and Beru are already dead, doesn’t he risk his credibility if Luke then goes to his uncle and asks if what Obi-Wan said is true. Imagine what that conversation would look like.
Owen - Where were you all day?
Luke - I got jumped by some Tuscan Raiders, but old man Kenobi saved me and we had a long chat back at his hut. Weird thing, he said my father wasn’t a navigator, he was a Jedi and left here to protect a republic senator days before the start of the Clone Wars conflict?
Owen - Actually, your father never lived with us, only your grandmother. Your father once stopped by to briefly visit, but when he arrived, Sand People kidnapped and killed your Grams. After your dad slaughtered the Tuskans in revenge, men, women, and children, he took our family protocol droid C3PO, which I think he may have build when he was a little boy, and left to go rescue Kenobi.
Luke - Huh? C3PO? You mean this C3PO?
Owen - Yup. Quite a coincidence, right? Anyway, most people assume your dad died near the end of the war and Old Ben Kenobi brought you here for us to raise you. Truth be told, you and I aren’t actually related, but whatever. Did you wipe those droids memories yet?
At the core of all this, a lot of the implied history that accounts for the development of Kenobi’s character in Eps 4, 5 and 6 is unsupported by the Kenobi events in Eps 1-3. This, in turn, is why the prequels turn Luke into a chump, and make Kenobi’s involvement in Luke’s life almost sinister. With the context of the prequels in place, many of the big reasons calling Luke to action are just fabrications cooked up by an old ex-Jedi with an agenda. And this version of Old Ben Kenobi, based on what he tells Luke, doesn’t gel with the younger Obi-Wan Kenobi, hero of the clone wars. Hiding Vader’s true identity is understandable and good story telling, but Kenobi setting up these little lies to break down Luke’s worldview is a sign of poor judgement on behalf of Kenobi's character. And all that becomes a problem solely due to the PT. Maybe the new Disney+ series/anthology film can effectively stitch all those dialog inconsistencies together.
Kenobi in the OT is an A- character. Kenobi in the PT is an A character. Put those two trilogies together, and you get an F character because the prequels make Obi-Wan’s conversations in the Original Trilogy inconsistent, sloppy, contradictory, and sinister. Take away the prequels and Kenobi’s lines paint a more compelling backstory for Luke and the audience to contemplate and cling to; a history far more intriguing and consistent than what the prequels offer us.
Another example is what Vader says to Luke on Endor in Return of the Jedi, “Obi-Wan once thought as you do.” Luke attempts to convince Vader to come back to the light, but Vader claims the dark-side is too powerful to come back from. Vader’s line regarding Kenobi is never supported in the prequels. In Revenge of the Sith, once Obi-Wan sees that Anakin is lost, has killed Jedi younglings, become Vader, and accepts his duty or mission from Yoda to destroy Vader, he doesn’t attempt to bring Anakin back from the dark-side. When Kenobi is finally face to face with Vader on Mustafar, he judges Anakin, criticizes Anakin, but doesn’t try to save Anakin. So we have no onscreen moment to supports why Vader would say that line to Luke. Even the Clone Wars series, which I love FWIW, doesn’t provide back-up for that line. All we needed to see was a moment where Kenobi tried to reason with Anakin, bring him back to the light, yet still loose Anakin to the Dark Side to make Vader’s statement to Luke about Kenobi make sense.
If you’re curious to hear more about why the Kenobi character has become such a huge plot hole in the Star Wars Skywalker Saga, please check out the podcast episode from Before the Z-Wing: Episode 11 Saving General Kenobi, where the two hosts debate over the Kenobi character and put together a wish list for the forthcoming Kenobi series/movie.

I think Obi-Wan is right there at the top as a character. McGregor's and Guinnes' performances are very much in line in portraying a quite unique character. I find Obi-Wan to be the textbook Jedi who always lives by the code and defends it even when he knows that it has its flaws and requires lots of looking from a certain point of view. Still he bases his worldview on his own experiences on how to succeed and survive while keeping to the Jedi code. He was able to adapt and aply the Jedi ways succesfully which then made him a little arrogant and biased. He embodies Qui-Gon's words on how it is a hard life to be a Jedi-knight and how it requires commitment to the code even with the most difficult desicions.

I agree with what everyone said about him being the perfect Jedi and what other Jedi should strive for, especially when it came to his relationship with Satine.
However, I do disagree with saying he shouldn't have been loyal to the Senate and Democracy. As Yoda said in episode 5, "A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never to attack." And Democracy is all about trying to solve a problem peacefully, only resorting to violence when you have too.
Now it's true the Senate was getting corrupted, but not everyone in it was bad and the ideals of Justice and Democracy are honorable things that should be upheld, but of course, sometimes that means going against the higher-ups and doing what you believe is right. Captain America knows all about that, sure he loves his country and works for the government of some kind, but his allegiance is to what is good, honorable, and right, so he thus sometimes goes against people in the government to do the right thing, but he's still loyal to the government and his country, even if he has to go against them and be rough sometimes. Honestly, more Jedi could learn to be like that, be loyal to the Republic, but don't be a slave, make your own decisions, as the Clones learned during the Battle of Umbara.

    • @englishlady9797
      @englishlady9797 3 роки тому

I disagree about him being "the perfect Jedi". Like show me where Lucas said that. I think calling him the "perfect Jedi" is just a mask for the fact that he's basically a perfect character who has no flaws and very little development.
Second, Obi Wan is one of those people who is blindly loyal to the system and refuses to see its faults. Its "keep the rules and toe the line" even if that hurts the people that you care about, or indeed causes their deaths. Democracy is a great idea in theory... but corruption wasn't the Republic's only problem. It was a "democracy" which had millions of human slaves, it was a "democracy" in which only the elites took part in the democratic process. It wa a "democracy" which excluded entire planets and species, a "democracy" in which a few people, most of them unelected, decided they knew what was good for everyone.
