GROWING DATE PALM FROM SEEDS | PROPAGATION, CARE FOR SEEDLINGS

  • How to propagate Date palm from seeds? Date palm is a genus of plants of Palm family, which includes about 20 species that grow in Africa and Eurasia.
    Flowering time: late spring - early summer.
    Optimal Date palm care - lighting: bright scattered sunlight. The appearance of yellow or brown spots in the summer indicates excessive lighting.
    Most often, for the propagation of the date palm, seeds are used (which are left from sweet fruits).

    oh i put it between the wet tissue and kept it inside container, now they have germinated white colour looks like white warms. It defiantly works because dates grows in the hot countries and keeping them inside container helps them stay warm and grow back

    No you need to put them in big pots from the beginning ,so they think they are in the ground and not a damn tiny little pot ! And they will grow three times faster and bigger ! And fertilize them for proper nutrients ! !

    Everything said to soak the seeds in water first. I didn't do that. I just put mine right into regular plant potting soil & kept them watered. They didn't get a lot of light through the winter, so I put them under my parrots sun lamp. I kept them outside all summer, & in the following winter I kept them close to a south facing window. I didn't really do anything special & honestly I really neglected them letting them dry out often. They've been outside now all summer, I've fed them a couple of times with regular houseplant food, & have pretty much forgot about them, forgetting to water them, & they are huge! I just checked them & they have grown like crazy. The ones I over potted & watered often struggled & almost died. My Majesty Palm likes lots of water, the dry climate ones definitely don't. I ordered Canary island date Palm seeds & sprouted one the same way & it's growing well. They're so much fun to grow. I love palms!

    Pro tip:
    If you live in a USDA zone below 9b-10a, keep your seedlings indoors before your first frost, and until your last frost. Mature trees can take a frost, but the seedlings can't. You will need to do this for the first 3-5 years, then you can keep them in an unheated greenhouse instead. It's best to do it this way instead of killing your seedlings that can take more than 2 months to germinate! If you live in zone 7 or lower, you will never truly be able to grow them outdoors year round.

    Do you leave them in the sun during the day and what are minimum and maximum temperatures for doing well? How regurarly are you watering them ? Any fertilezers? My seedlings are 10 months old, i guess same variety and not much smaller then yours..Some of the plants have their 4th leaf growing which seems to be much stronger than the previous 3:) They germinated last july in direct sun in my greenhouse, then they kept growing inside of the flat from october, and now outside in my greenhouse - they get 40 degrees Celsius max, at night 10-12 degrees Celsius- maybe its too cold a bit as well. When they get hot sun the leaves are always becoming smaller, fast closed, and they are drying out at the edges. I give them water every day, no wet feet cause the rest leaves the bottom of the pot. I sprinkle the leaves,I will put them in the shade maybe. I live in middle Europe. What else can i do for more spreading leaves ? Thx Ádám

      @@babyaardvark It is recommended that you only soak most seeds for 12 to 24 hours and no more than 48 hours. ... After soaking your seeds, they can be planted as directed. The benefit of soaking seeds before planting is that your germination time will be reduced, which means you can have happy, growing plants faster. Your seeds will sprout even if you don't soak your seeds before planting, but with soaking the germination time decreases, and the germination rate increases.

    • @timmillan6701
      @timmillan6701 4 роки тому

      @@cerverg I don't know this for sure, but I would think that commercial dates are hand pollinated, so the quality of seedlings would be consistent(but probably not as good as the mother tree). The thing that you won't know is whether your plant is male or female- and you wont find out for years. Commercial varieties are always propagated by removing suckers from mother plants, because we know the quality and because all suckers taken off of a female plant will be female and bear fruit. Sometimes male plants are also propagated for physical uniformity - they can be used in landscaping, where date fruit would be too messy

      Barbara Brady After a couple of months i got my third skinny leaf. In approx 3/4 years it will develop a strong root and base. It also depends on the kind of palm seed u have.

      The plant will use all its energy to produce roots with all the available room. And it can't use the energy for the leafs

      The plant will grow too fast. If you want a smaller plant use smaller pot

      It will look comical-- a very small seedling on a large pail! Furthermore, using a large pot requires that you water more often.

      @@josefadul550 not really you can just water it near the roots
