Making a Scottish Highland Dagger
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 гру 2024
- Today in the shop I am making dagger. More specifically, a Scottish Dirk in the “Traditional Dirk” style from around the late 16 through the mid 1700s. I am using 3/16” 80Crv2 high carbon steel for the 16” blade, 1/4” brass for the bolster and pommel, and desert iron wood for the knot-work carved, through-tang handle. The end of the tang is treaded, and the pommel is tapped to secure everything together. The handle was finish sanded up to 600 grit, then stained with dark walnut, and finished with boiled linseed oil.

Great build Dustin I always love a good looking Dirk
Best in the intro. THE DOGS, they are having a blast :)
Lol. Thanks.
I only have one gripe, and it is a common gripe for me. A knife is not finished until it has a home to call it’s own. It needs a scabbard or sheath. Other that, that is an elegant weapon for a more brutal time. You are a true craftsman.
Thanks Fester. I agree, and we will be making a video on making the scabbard shortly.
@@TheArtofCraftsmanship can’t wait to see it. I have three kukri I’m trying to make homes for that I bought of a swap forum. The amount of detail you put it the dirk, I know the scabbard will be a sight to behold sir.
What a GORGEOUS Dirk you've made there!! I need one bad to add to my MACDOUGALL plaid kilt!!
that intro is just amazing! beautiful craftsmanship!
😁😂
Awesome intro - like the mad Scott and his hell hounds terrorizing the country side! Great dagger - handle really looks nice!
Haha thanks Fred! Hell hounds on your trail....
This is great! Hopefully the UA-cam algorithm blesses you with millions of views.
Thanks Josh. You never know what the algorithm will do, lol.
Wow! Amazing Job! Art and craftsmanship is an understatement this is magic!
Thanks Jim.
Awesome ❤...wonderful...no words for this work. From 🇮🇹
Thanks so much Gennaro!
Nice work my man, learnt alot, thank you! (and the scene at the end had me in stitches HAHA) 😄Cheers
From Clan Guthrie, Greetings and Salutations. Top of the morning to ye. I've just watched your video and I've got to say, that is one mighty awesome Highlands Dirk! Awesome man, just Awesome!
Thank you James, from the O’Haras.
@@TheArtofCraftsmanship You're most welcome!
That came out beautifully. Good job!
Thanks Sam
Killer video. That wood shark is probably Teak. Beautiful wood that when polished right seems to have a inner glow. Almost like Tigers eye. Its very dense and tough as nails. Which is why its so popular for boat decks. Being a shark. I was probably carved in the many Islands of the south Pacific. Where many tribes either thought sharks were family members who had passed on. Or even thought of sharks as a god
Gorgeous dirk, mate. Well done.
Thanks Geoff.
That's Beautiful Man. I love it.
Absolutely beautiful piece of art! Although there was not a single bit of forging that took place here. For me, a big part making historical pieces is making them using historically accurate methods. To each their own however. Even so beautiful Dirk🙏
That intro was my favorite thing from all the challenge videos!
Lol. Thanks Erick. Devon was ready for a broken face for sure, but instead we had outtake gold😂
Very nice job brother. Love the carving.
Cheers Daniel!
That dagger is awesome!
Thanks Mike!
very nice job. i always loved the dirk. well done.
Thanks John. Ive been wanting to build one for a while.
Great build. I like the nonsymmetric look.
Thanks Mike. Me too. That was one of the thing I chose due to its difference from what a “standard” dagger might look like.
That's a damn fine looking Dirk! Well done! That handel is gorgeous.
The opening shot is so good! Sooooo good. Good on you for recycling to make the handle. And the handle turned out great! So nice!
Thanks brother.
I LOVE the intro! Very cool build, Dustin! Amazing blade!
Thanks Denis. It was your excitement for the battle charge in full regalia that encouraged me to make the idea a reality, lol.
As someone who is half-Highlander in terms of ancestry, I approve of this video. Nice work.
Thanks Steve.
That intro was the best!!
Lol, thanks.
Thank you for the video. Excellent weapon sir. Only problem is, my son wants to have a go at making one. I’ve told him to watch this video as well as learn patience first. 👍🇦🇺
Great work . Great video. Love the beginning and end. Good stuff. From Glenn CATT in Massachusetts.
Thanks for watching the whole thing and the kind words. Cheers Jennifer!
I love how the doggos are like "dunno why you're running, boss, but we're super excited to join in¡"
Haha yes. They were down to run, every take.
That's awesome!! Congrats for the engraving knot, looks great and I'm sure pretty tricky to pull off! Also, threading the tang is always tricky! And yeah, I have to mention this too, that intro was funny af :) Loved the dogs! Cheers and big thumbs up!
Thanks Brother. I had a great time carving the handle. It will definitely be happening again.
I'm Scottish, and the was a beautiful job on that dagger.
Beautiful work!
Thank you.
There are no words just WOW!!! 👍🏻
Cheers. 🥃
🍺. Thank you Al.
Fabulous work! It was such a pleasure to watch as you made this. Kudos to whoever filmed and edited this, what a quality job they did. The intro with you and the dogs made me smile and I was surprised when I heard you speak because I was expecting a Scottish accent. Anyway, although I can’t buy all the tools and learn all the skills I’d need to make one myself, it made me itch to make one myself … I’m not sure why. My surname is Stewart, so perhaps it’s the old DNA that is to blame. Really enjoyed watching this, thanks- and I subscribed because of it. What a great workshop you have too and when you went outside I saw you had a covered veranda. I’m watching from England and it’s a pet peeve of mine that nobody seems to have one over here!
Excellent. Nicely done.
Thank you.
Beautiful work
Thanks Charles!
I grew up in Tucson AZ, Ironwood is native to Baja California Peninsula and the Sonoran Desert. Beautiful wood but hard on tools
Nice dirk! An old country blacksmith I know forged many of them in years gone by, using old auto-body rasps when he could get them. not as pretty as yours because he never had a 2 x 72. he said that canola oil is not as good as light mineral oil, such as transformer oil or horse drench oil. automatic transmission oil is good too but at 100-120 degrees F.
great looking handle design
Thank you.
@@TheArtofCraftsmanship way it flows with the blade top 3 daggers I seen
Magnificent!!!
Thank you.
Exquisite work!
Thank you DLB
Very nice. I'd give you top 5. Maybe top three. Great work! I'm voting the win to Tyrell knifeworks though.
Thanks D! It was a fun project for sure . Denis’s is definitely one that deserves to be tops. Thanks for watching.
Fine work.
Thanks Tony
Awesome dirk, intro has me reaching for the old Brown Bess tho… yours aye
Lol. Thanks.
Very cool build!
Thanks Chad!
Un capolavoro!!! Bellissima. Complimenti!!! Bravo!!!. Grazie.
Cheers Roberto!
You do great work. It’s cool to watch you adapt to different challenges on the fly.
We like to show it all. Thanks for the kind words Patrick!
Amazing work
Thank you Mattie!
A very specific episode, also a masterpiece.
Congratulations.
Most importantly, they shared a phenomenal video with your loyal audience.
Thanks so much.
@@TheArtofCraftsmanship
And of course, I vote for you.
Just these T-shirts, you don't need that.
Be old Dustin, it's not all about money.
Art is special in its own way and wealth just comes.
Honor is more important.
Greeting.
Awesome job!!! Slàinte 🏴🥃
That intro subscribed me. I hope for more dogs running in slow motion.
Stunning, the best 👌🏽
Thanks so much Chris!
For future reference, 90° angles at your tang creates stress points where its more likely for your blade to snap clean off your handle.
Doing three cycles of normalization is counterproductive - only the growth of steel crystals occurs with each heating above the recrystallization temperature. It is enough to perform the normalization once correctly - heat 30°C above the quenching temperature and let it cool slowly...
Beautiful work on the handle. I would have liked to seen Crisp bevel lines.
I though about it, but it’s just much more common in Dirks to not have bevel lines.
To build my Housemade 2x72, I bought a pneumatic 0.5"x18" grinder (suggested by Brian). It fits in tight areas great and he suggested it to remove the weld seams inside the tubing. I also used it to grind a fuller on a seax I made for myself. Worked great for that, too! Can't remember if you have air in your shop, but if you do, you might seriously consider buying one.
great Dirk awesome
Much appreciated
Hands down best intro of the challenge! Lol, it's amazing. Came out great man!
Lol! Gotta love an epic slo-mo (with crazy dogs)
Dustin, congratulations on a really nice build for your Scottish Dagger. I think you had one of the best step-by-step videos of your build, including helpful tips for those new to the craft. Loved the carving/relief detail work on your handle. Good Luck in the competition. You earned a new subscriber ... thanks for the share.
Thanks Byron. I appreciate the kind words. Welcome to the channel.
Poor shark he never even had a chance...hihi just playing I am a newbie raising blade Smith also and just wanted to say that I enjoyed this video sir very nice Scottish dagger you made
Thank you. It was weird watching me cut that shark up for sure, lol. Thanks for watching.
Amazing ❤
Very nice. That is a very large piece of desert ironwood. And if you ever need a job separate from blacksmithing/knifemaking, you can apply to be a butcher! It's fun watching you work and you're a credit to our Scottish ancestors.
Lol, it definitely felt a bit odd breaking down the shark into pieces. Thanks for watching.
Bloody good job son. Very impressive. Will you make a matching sgian dubh?
Thanks Dode. It will definitely get done…eventually 😉
Nice job!👍
Thanks H!
Hey Dustin. My name is Dustin and I live in WV too. I thought that’s where you lived because I heard you say its where you bought something from before
Very nice......
I absolutely love that handle!!!
Thanks Bryan. It was a blast to carve.
You makers are making this very hard to vote. You all are making absolutely beautiful daggers of varying style.
You guys are truly evolving before our eyes.
Thank you. It’s fun to have a goal to strive for, but just fun to get to know a great group of makers as well.
Now that's a dagger!
Yes sir!
The Scotsman in me is singing Scotland the Brave. Love it
Yes sir!🎶🎵💪🏼
Fantastic Dustin, thank you
Thanks Val.
To grind the blade to a razor sharp convex mirror finish you shoukd load a big sold felt or cotton buffing wheel with abracive powder and glue. A bit 40cm x5cm wheel is great for big blades.
You can load many wheels of different hardness and grit. It is how it was dont in the past after wet grinding in europe
Woooooaaah so cool 😎
Thanks Wesley! Cheers.
awesome dirk
Thanks Vlad.
I enjoyed your video and your process. You turned out a beautiful dirk, too. That handle!
I'm just getting started in the craft and it was very affirming to see several of the same tools I have in my shop.
Great job!
The opening shot was awesome! Great video. The dagger is great as well
Lol. We had high hope for what it would look like, and it definitely met our expectations…and then some😂🐶. Thanks.
I agree the tools don't make the craftsman. It's what the craftsman can do with the tools.
Exactly. The tools can help but they’re just tools.
That is awesome man! Exquisite work!
Thank you Mark.
What a nice dagger. It is almost a sword. Other great job from workshop king!! Congratulations my friend Dustin. An awesome piece. Greetings a lot from Spain.
Thanks Miguel. 🍻you’re the man.
Looks like there is some really tough competition, I thought the boys from Alaska had it in the bag, now I aint so sure
Thanks for watching! So many great daggers.
A breathtakingly beautiful piece of work Sir! A Dirk fit for a Highlander! Thank you for showing me your awesome skills. 🍇
Thank you for such kind words.
Thanks for sharing.
Sir, I really love your work! Just fantastic! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much Stefan!
Now that's just a beautiful piece. Great job!
I appreciate that Daniel.
I am very pleased you decided to go with shorts under the kilt ;P Fantastic intro and an even better blade :D
Lol. I figured I would save you all from a show😂😂. Thanks Robany.
Cry Havoc and let slip the Dogs of WAR!! Great opener, bossman!
This is beautiful dagger Dustin! You need to buy flexible attachment to your dremel- it will makes all carving much easier, but You made amazing job with the carving anyway! Nicely done Man!
I definitely agree. Now that I’ve done it, and enjoyed it so much, I’m definitely in the market for one.
Oooooooooh my laaaaaaaaaaaaaaawd that intro made me piss myself lololol loved it man!!!!
Lol. Thanks CG
Keep kicking but buddy ill keep watching.
nice, love the woodwork, well tidy work
Thanks Andy
That turned out really beautiful, good work!
Thank you.
That carving really set this out ahead of the pack man! A+
Thanks for the kind works Airin. I really had a great time carving. I’ll definitely be doing more in the future.
Beautiful! Great work!
Thank you.
Wow you really out did yourself that is amazing!
Thanks Celt. I think so too.
Beautiful durk man. I love it. Now your ready for the highland games 😉👍
That’s what I was thinking Mike.
Super cool man! I really like it
Thanks so much Drew!
Is there an advantage to grinding your bevels after heat treating? Seems like it would be easier before the steel is hardened.
Even though it was a sad occasion, I enjoyed meeting you at George's funeral. Your videos are truly unique and educational. Great work on the dirk.
Thanks Larry. It was nice meeting you too. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful blade Dustin! And the intro was very cool. And the dogs....❤ Good luck man!
great looking knife, that handle was really well executed
Thank you. It was a blast to carve.
