They're not just a band; they're an experience. Watching you hear them for the first time is such a treat. Living vicariously through you at this point since I can't hear it for the first time again myself.
My favorite bass channel covering one of my favorite bands. Merry Christmas to me! Keep up the great work. I discovered Streetlight back in the mid 2000s when I was browsing cds in some mall and came across the album Keasbey Nights, which at the time I knew as a Catch-22 album, but the cover informed me it was performed by some band called Streetlight Manifesto, which led me down the rabbit hole of figuring out why some other band recorded their own version of Keasbey Nights. You may already be familiar with the lore, but Tomas was seemingly incensed by the fact the his former band was still performing the songs he wrote, which actually made it into some of the lyrics of Streetlight Manifesto, specifically A Moment of Silence from this album. "Now everybody's laughing because they're thinking they're in on something I don't get Don't forget, I connect and I heard every word you said Like a child who believes he was wronged If you hate me so much then stop singing my songs" Anyways I brought that up because it would be cool to see you compare and contrast the Streetlight versions of the songs as compared to the Catch-22 versions. Personally I like some Streetlight versions more and some catch-22 more depending on the song.
Favorite band of all time. Cannot wait for you to check out something from The Hands That Theive. I believe it is their best album. "Ungrateful" would be very entertaining for you to react to. Thanks for all your hard work and happy new year!
in his song request, I requested the song Hands that Thieve because he's now aware of Petes incredible bass skills, but thought him being thrown off with the tone only for him to realize Pete is actually rocking a double bass for the track. Also agree, I am glad he's getting the context with Everything Goes Numb so it gives context to literally how Hands that Thieve (album) literally is just changing the game musically. There are exactly zero bands pulling off what they do. For all intents and purposes its 4th wave ska.
My favorite album of theirs too. It’s soooooo rich musically and lyrically. And at the sane time feels more catchy somehow, like easier to get into than the more dense material from the first record. Also Pete’s double bass work, as mentioned by a friend here, is just outstanding
I want to preface this by saying I know nothing about music other than I like what I like. I've never studied theory and I play no instruments (I went through a pretty intense kazoo phase in 4th grade though). I say this so that if anyone rips me for not knowing what I'm talking about, it is known that I am already aware of that fact. Anyway, the reason I love Streetlight is what is being said at the end. They play a cinematic style of music. And that 16 bar thing being mentioned at the end is part of it. When I tell people to listen to them, I say that they do not really follow modern song structure much and that - to me and my very untrained ear and brain - structure their songs more in movements like classical music. They slide through motifs - am I using this word improperly, I'd bet yes - and create a musical story more than a song. It isn't about repetition and familiarity. They have verses and choruses and bridges, but not the way they are used by other artists. They structure the music like a story as much as the lyrics tell a story, and the music follows more of a plot structure than a song structure.
A lot of that makes sense to me as a former vocalist/singer who could follow along with sheet music vocally or plunk out some basic notes on piano, but basically knows know theory and can't play an instrument. I am a huge movie fan, and I sang in punk/hardcore bands, but also did musical theater and enjoy musicals. As much as I love the music, the lyrics are just as big of a part to me. And the lyrics/story telling/vocal structure of Tomas Kalnoky's songs are what drive me to love them the most.
@stevedoredandyfunk3032 Great points! They have just enough of an accessible song structure to keep it familiar and moving along, but enough surprises that keep it fresh and unpredictable. And again, as I said, pepper in a ton of dynamic restraint here and there, which makes the big parts even bigger!
What I like about ska-punk is that you can mix all kind of styles and influences and still be in the ska-punk wagon. So many exemples like Gogol Bordello, Kultur Shock, Haydamaky, Athena, Flogging Molly, Ska-P, Skalariak, Panteón Rococó and many oher bands. Great choice, great band, great work sir! ❤
For anyone that enjoys streetlight, I highly recommend listening to the acoustic version of the albums. Its just tohkay and a guitar, not screaming/singing, but very soft and absolutely incredible
From 2008-2013 I've seen streetlight live about 5 or 6 times (honestly lost count) and in the earlier concerts their bassist played 3-5 songs in their set with an upright bass which I thought was very cool. I recommend you listen to their album "The Hands That Thieve" it's Streetlights most recent album and in my opinion their most polished album in terms of song structure. Songs like the three of us, ungrateful, the hands that thieve, if only for memories and toe to toe really do a fantastic job of showcasing their musical influences and I think you'd thoroughly enjoy them.
I've mainly only heard a bit of Voodoo Glow Skills from the old Punk o Rama compilations but man I really like Delinquent Song. I don't know anything about drums but I dig the drums especially in that song.
I'll never forget my first time hearing this album, on the school bus to a field trip to a theme park, friend let me borrow the cd to play in my walkman.. was blown away.
This is bizarre. I got super into this band over the weekend and just yesterday watched your prior video of "we will fall together" and thought to myself, "I wish he would do everything went numb" and here we are haha. If you haven't seen the live recording of we will fall together, I highly recommend checking it out. Insane performance by these guys. The bassist kills it
Another Streetlight song. Had to watch as soon as I got notified. Amazing job and great video to close out 2024. Thanks for an awesome year of content Mark and a very Happy New Year to you!! Can't wait to see what 2025 brings! :)
Instant subscribe. Would love to join Patreon for this alone. I've been listening to Streetlight for about 15 years, and while I'm not tired of them by any means, and they remain my fav band, you just helped me unlock a way to see the song as fresh as if it was the first time hearing it again. Thanks so much for this man.
This was the first song I ever heard from these guys. They were an opening band I’d never heard of. They opened with this, put me on my ass for 45 minutes and I never knew what hit me…. And you still pulled things outta this song I never noticed 20 years later.
i still remember to this day seeing them live during the catch-22 fallout back around '99-'00 when I was in high school. Noticing the little skinny dude with the fretless bass and what he was doing with it. blew my mind
You should check Kalnoky’s project in between Catch 22 and Streetlight called Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution (B.O.T.A.R). It’s 15 or people and all acoustic.
Looking back at the beginning of this year, I'm pretty sure I've become a much better bassist and the best "musician" (not really a musician myself) in my ska-punk band thanks to your videos. Thanks a lot for everything you do Mark! ♥ Here's to a prosperous 2025! 🥂
I am so early hahah. I will take this minute to recommend two things! Dr D by the Bosstones and Bird-Watching and Vice Versa from The Flaming Tsunamis! You will be really surprised by TFT! Love your videos Mark!
First streetlight show at Krome and all the good ones at the old Knitting factory in NYC....who was there with me! Let's also give Pat "Mingus" from Catch-22 his props....also a GOAT
Nice! And good thing you didn't go with Point/Counterpoint or we'd make listen and analyze the "long" version of the song. Keep em coming in 2025 Mark, you're awesome.
Saw these guys in 07’ when I was 17 it was my first concert, at the now defunct electric factory in Philly, I said to my friends aloud “how bad could it be it’s a ska show?” I was worried about how intense the crowd was gonna be Lolol was one of the craziest shows I’ve ever been to. Less than Jake was the headliner. They were fine but streetlight fucking TORE THE GODDAMN ROOF OFF. That dude with just one guitar in that band making all that noise and standing out in that cacophony of sound was an unforgettable experience and a memorable first concert for teenage me.
I’m a bar-chord guitarist that went bald 15 years ago. I don't know what I'm more jealous of: 1.) Your ability to play along to songs you've just heard 2.) That gorgeous head of hair.
Not to be a nerd... But there was another album between Catch 22 and this that Tomas participated in Bandits of the Acoustic Revolutions "A Call to Arms" Another Band in the Kalnoky verse, think Streetlight with like 30 more instruments
Hell yeah you have been releasing some fire songs to cover !!!! Dude you should have done “a better place, a better time” a more bass focused song. Awesome song!!!!
You need to check out Link 80. They came out around the same time as Catch 22. They're a little less polished which I like. I'd argue Link 80 are one of the best skapunk bands to do it. Check out Link 80- Verbal Kint or Enough if you really want something in your face with a awesome bass tone.
It probably isn't a fit for the channel, but just for your own enjoyment check out Toh Kay's Streetlight Lullabies. Tomas doing SM songs acoustic. Really cool.
If you get the opportunity, you should listen to Toh Kay, Kalnoky's side project, and it's such a wild time to listen to that after hearing the Streetlight tracks.
i considered trying to learn this song a few weeks ago, but like.... the phrases barely repeat! I find this a lot in ska and similar genres, the playing feels so fluid its difficult to even break it down into chunks.
I think what a lot of people don't appreciate is how your whole video does 0 cuts. It is one take, and I really enjoy the raw-ness of your content. Keep it up homie, and have a great ending to this year, and a great beginning to a new year!
You should one from Talking Heads, with female bassist Tina Weymouth. There are plenty of tunes: Life during wartime, psychokiller, found a job, air, crosseyed and painless and many more!
Streetlight is prog-ska the only other band I know of with a similar but not at all similar genre is Rx Bandits. But Streetlight is the best, I've seen them more than any other band live because their shows are so fun and you can invite anyone to one, and they will have a good time.
If you are looking to get back into metal at some point I would highly recommend “A Home” by Rivers of Nihil. Biggs is a beast on that bass with some seriously tasteful melodic fills throughout the song👌🏻🤘🏻
Depending on the song, they change their punk-fusion. I like to call them jazz-punk but then they go and put out something latin infused. They definitely stand alone.
EVERY TIME YOU REACT TO STREETLIGHT MANIFESTO AN ANGEL GAINS THEIR WINGS
😇
They're not just a band; they're an experience. Watching you hear them for the first time is such a treat. Living vicariously through you at this point since I can't hear it for the first time again myself.
Finally! An absolute ripper of a tune.
Here’s to Life is another beauty
That whole album is banger after banger
My favorite bass channel covering one of my favorite bands. Merry Christmas to me! Keep up the great work. Omg thank you I’ve asked for this song several times!!!! Amazing song !!!!
Favorite band of all time. Cannot wait for you to check out something from The Hands That Theive. I believe it is their best album. "Ungrateful" would be very entertaining for you to react to. Thanks for all your hard work and happy new year!
Yeah, I'm hoping that ends up being one of his full album reactions.
in his song request, I requested the song Hands that Thieve because he's now aware of Petes incredible bass skills, but thought him being thrown off with the tone only for him to realize Pete is actually rocking a double bass for the track. Agreed, only album I listen to fully. It is packed to the brim with melody. There is literally no empty space
Your happiness on Streetlight videos is so infectious! Such an underrated band

Most of those are nowhere near ska.
Like, nowhere near. Flogging Molly is punk, but fucking nowhere are they ska
Ska isn't just "punk with horns"
For anyone that enjoys streetlight, I highly recommend listening to the acoustic version of the albums. Its just tohkay and a guitar, not screaming/singing, but very soft and absolutely incredible
Great song to start the new year. Cheers Mark, looking forward to what you give us in the year coming.
Same to you! Happy New Year, Chris!

Once again. You gonna love Voodoo Glow Skulls.
VGS are another chaotic and unique ska band
I've mainly only heard a bit of Voodoo Glow Skills from the old Punk o Rama compilations but man I really like Delinquent Song. I don't know anything about drums but I dig the drums especially in that song.

The next song on the album, That'll Be The Day, is my favorite SM song. The bass in the into is one of my favorite things.
i still remember to this day seeing them live during the catch-22 fallout back around '99-'00 when I was in high school. Noticing the little skinny dude with the fretless bass and what he was doing with it. blew my mind
I funking love this song. Recently saw them for the second time last month. Such an epic band. Can't think of a better word to describe them...
You should check Kalnoky’s project in between Catch 22 and Streetlight called Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution (B.O.T.A.R). It’s 15 or people and all acoustic.
You really funked up this video.

A band I’ll never tire of and a reactor I can’t get enough of. 😊
I learned this song when I was young and it’s one of those that has stuck in my muscle memory all these years later
... and a happy new year to you Mark!
Just saw streetlight in brooklyn. So happy to see you enjoying!!!!
Excellent selection to close out the year. Happy new year, Love the channel!
Happy New Year! Thanks for the kind words!!
I love this band
Great New Year´s Eve gift! Thank you! Looking forward the full album reaction + Failed States of Propagandhi 😁 Cheers!
Oh man I've been waiting for you to get to this one.
Everything Goes Numb is one of the greatest records ever made by human beings. I don't say this as an opinion, I say it matter of factly.
I can't wait to hear it!
Agreed, I still listen to it at least once a month
Then don’t put it up for a vote lol. Make an executive decision for the full album review!
@@MatthewGladys-lh6pp I second this!
First streetlight show at Krome and all the good ones at the old Knitting factory in NYC....who was there with me! Let's also give Pat "Mingus" from Catch-22 his props....also a GOAT

Love this song!
YASSSSSSSSSSSSS! Now please do A Moment of Silence and a Moment of Violence (you have to do both at the same time, you'll see why)
UA-cam keeps showing me your channel so i decided to sub.
Hey, that means a lot! Really appreciate you being here, and I'll see you around!
I’m a bar-chord guitarist that went bald 15 years ago. I don't know what I'm more jealous of:

RUFIO "Road To Recovery" - think you'll love that. Very pop-punk, but the bassist is insane on this one.
It probably isn't a fit for the channel, but just for your own enjoyment check out Toh Kay's Streetlight Lullabies. Tomas doing SM songs acoustic. Really cool.
Hooooo boy its a good day today!!! Class is in session at Low End U!
Streetlight is my introduction to Ska
Still shocked you haven't hit A Better Place A Better Time. It's so bass heavy.
You gotta do Walking Away on the Streetlight Kaesby Nights.
Streetlight Manifesto, Prog Ska
If you get the opportunity, you should listen to Toh Kay, Kalnoky's side project, and it's such a wild time to listen to that after hearing the Streetlight tracks.
Also can’t wait for the Point/Counterpoint listen
Can we all finally agree that punk, punk/ska, ska all have the BEST Bass riffs?!
i considered trying to learn this song a few weeks ago, but like.... the phrases barely repeat! I find this a lot in ska and similar genres, the playing feels so fluid its difficult to even break it down into chunks.

He used a ibanez pj fretless in Catch 22 and a Warwick 5 string in Streetlight if I remember correctly
Still think their last album is one of the greatest things recorded. Btbam colors and hands that thieve 2 best things ever recorded
You can't just learn one instrument with these guys. I always need to learn the horn parts and guitars too. Beautiful.
Couldn't agree more!
You should one from Talking Heads, with female bassist Tina Weymouth. There are plenty of tunes: Life during wartime, psychokiller, found a job, air, crosseyed and painless and many more!

Hey! You really gotta hear The New by Interpol, i think it has one of the best bass lines i've ever heard.
If you are looking to get back into metal at some point I would highly recommend “A Home” by Rivers of Nihil. Biggs is a beast on that bass with some seriously tasteful melodic fills throughout the song👌🏻🤘🏻
I think a cool new ska band you can check out is is Kill Lincoln. I like the song second city.
If you love horns, please review RX Bandits - And the Battle begins. Game changer for you
'Machine gun skatting' - those are the 'nanas'
YESSSSSSS
Wait until he hears “Afterglow” by Flying Raccoon Suit. Hehe. Oh, and wait till he hears Pilfers :D
Bass and trumpet you say? Check out The Budos Band 🤯🤯🤯
hell yeah
I’d love to riff with this cat.
Next please react to Rufio - "Still" or "Road to Recovery"
They're on my list!
Wow. I just realized that I hadn't subscribed to your UA-cam channel. Kinda odd, considering I'm a Patreon patron. Well, that is fixed now.
Worst part about SM…. I can’t get enough of live vids, but have sadly accepted I’ll never see them live in Australia 😭
Love your stuff man! Just curious, would you ever jump into some metal? Check out Jared Smith in Archspire... lol
I did Archspire awhile back here! ua-cam.com/video/LdHO_juKNz4/v-deo.html
No shit! Watching now! U the man!

Depending on the song, they change their punk-fusion. I like to call them jazz-punk but then they go and put out something latin infused. They definitely stand alone.
You should react to walking away by catch 22
Please do Lounge Act by Nirvana
Voodoo Glow Skulls would blow your mid!!!
