Is India taking over the VFX industry ?!

- There has been a massive growth of VFX production in India in recent years. Indian branches (MPC, DNEG, Framestore, etc.) and indian companies (Makuta, Redchillies, Prime Focus, etc.) are delivering visual effects for world's biggest blockbusters. In this video you'll find out how did it start and where does it lead.

A number of years ago I bumped into a VFX co ordinator here in Toronto. At that time it was common practice to send files to India and have the FX or work done over night and ready to be used the next morning . Of course there was no issue with the quality from India but unfortunately the very reason to send it to the India FX houses was to save money. That being said, based on the salaries shown in this video at 8:12, these people are being grossly underpaid. If someone makes say $1000 USD per month and works 50 hours per week or 200 hours per month they are working for $5 per hour. I find that scandalous. Now maybe the general salaries in the country are alot lower but I do find this kind of outsourcing somewhat exploitive. I am not sure exactly what a VFX artist here in Canada or the USA would make but I am pretty damn sure it is a helluva lot more than what these workers in India are making. It's a great success story for India but I find it exploitive. There are just so many hours you can sit in front of a screen removing wires or tracking or keying. You cannot do this for decades since it will cause issues with your eyes and hands/nerves. So they should make more for the short number of years they can do the job. Someone is making big bucks and it's not the workers.
They can speak English, they are passionate, cheap, high in numbers AND in a Democratic country. It's a no brainer.
@@cuckoonut1208 yes no one’s disputing all that you write but my point is that there is widespread exploitation. India’s had a strong indigenous film industry for decades so not surprising they’ve gone into VFX. Issue is they’re being underpaid.
@@puddytat62 It's the tax structure of the country that dictates the outsourced business.
@@cuckoonut1208 Hmm well we have tax credits here in Toronto Canada and I can tell you that no one works for those kind of wages... IATSE union or not. In fact most countries offer some sort of tax credit which entices companies to shoot and produce their projects in that specific country or state. Doesn't mean people work for $5 an hour . After tax credits the production company pays essentially less per hour but the employee/ contract worker gets paid union/scale rates. Maybe you can live on 5 bucks an hour in India ?
Yes, those salaries are very low compared to western countries, but remember that living costs are lower in India. An average salary in India is 300 USD/ month

@@helloji9662 Cost and inflation are two different things. Europe's inflation often times dips below 2% and many a times have deflated opposite to inflation especially post sovereign debt crisis. Meanwhile, inflation in India ranges between 4-8%. Also, cheaper products comes at a cost such as underpaid people in primary sector and low quality ingredients/inputs(such as heavy use of palm oil). Lastly, there are other things such as Penn effect. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penn_effect

By watching this video you may feel like everything is nice and fine and it's just good days ahead, you need to know that the work life balance is basically zero in India. I am an FX TD working in one of the global studios that you listed in the beginning of the video. It has several branches outside India. I remember in one of the zoom calls that our team had when I just joined. The call was basically to inform us about coming back to studio while artists were still dealing with pay cuts and working unpaid overtime hours during COVID. When one of the artists raised this concern about overtime pay, the management rudely answered straight on our face that no overtime pay for Indian employees. That's basically how global studios treat their employees in India and unfortunately they hold the monopoly here and they set the "industry standards". Indian studios more or less follow the same working standards.

A lot of the outsourcing from major studios go to Indian branches. It's not taking over the industry as long as it's work for abroad studios
I think it's a good start to first work on some of the low to med level jobs that are outsourced from abroad, atleast we will have a technical pool to begin with. Later the same pool with undertake projects from within country and make it much bigger. This is true with many sectors in India, say for example the software sector. It started out as working for Americans and now India's software infrastructure is so robust that we are able to build and innovate on it. Things like UPI and digitalization of many government structures are direct benifits if this.

Start creating own companies after practice. I don’t even know what these words mean as an outsider.
VFX in India is now a power house for every studio in the world. But VFX artists suffer from horrible working conditions along with no overtime payment and exploitation of workers.
You lazy guys want freebies and then you complain that Modi government is not developing the country. It is your fault that you are poor and lazy. Our government is bringing big business to the country and instead of working hard you complain all day. Stop crying like a commie and start working.
true!
I am from India. I worked as a roto artist for 2-3 years and I switched to being a 3D Lighting artist and moved to Canada. I am current working as a Junior Lighting Artist for MPC, technicolor. I started my job in Jan 2022.
I earn $48000 and my monthly salary in hand after tax is $4000 Before tax and $3000 after tax. After paying all the rent + food + Phone recharge + other credit card expenses I have $1750 left for saving. Plus we have over time pay that is 1.5 x Number of hours. Plus the company gives us dinner and Lunch Uber eats vouchers if we are working overtime
But when I was in Indian I was paid 12,000 rupees as a Junior artist. That's how low artist are paid in India. Because Studios usually send work in India to save money.
And toxic work culture and zero work life balance is a big issue in India. It decreases the overall production and work satisfaction for the artist.

Indian companies consider outsourcing as a reliable source of income but I think they need to get out of their comfort zone and start creating world class original animations as they've got that caliber. Of course it's risky as their project might not get enough recognition/fame in the beginning but some companies need to take those bold initiatives.

I seriously agree with a lot of the differences in the comparison, discussion, and arguments above. One key struggle that the western counterpart struggles/exploits with is that due to the cheap labor, many of their jobs get pushed to many eastern countries and not only India.
Imagine trying to feed 1.3 billion people, the cost of living is super cheap compared to western countries as there is a decent ebb and flow of goods… and many struggle to even afford that in India… I really do be like that. If it’s too expensive then they will go to a different vendor who will sell goods cheaper and as a vendor selling at a higher cost will keep you out of business. There is a lot of local competition within the vicinity and the competition is within the next door neighbor (obviously exaggerated but hope you understand the struggle). This idea passes on to the other goods and services like VFX companies. It’s not a race with the western companies but rather a race with the company next door. Hence why many western companies setup shop in India for the diverse market and take the government incentives that you might also see in western countries.
I also agree with the deep rooted trouble with the underpaid and overworked hours. It might be easy to just say that one is easily replaceable…. The competition is really crazy … and it do be like that. People really understand they are deeply underpaid and want to move abroad to earn decent wages and why many Indians immigrate abroad to live the decent life. This is seriously a dream for many Indians.
