Whoa! Where's the steering feel? And who's responsible for that styling? Who cares? Not 2017 Toyota RAV4 owners. They're kept this compact crossover atop America's SUV sales heap for years. It'll automatically apply the brakes to prevent a frontal collision. Oh, there's stellar reliability, room, and comfort, too. But what if you like to drive? Is there a '17 RAV4 for you? I have driven Toyota's since 1988. I have put one O2 sensor on a 241k mile Corolla. That's it !!! Never a water pump, never an alternator, never a coil, I have never had an AC problem and I live in Texas. The only thing I do is routine maintenance ( oil, filters , brakes, and wiper blades ) . While others are complaining about expensive repairs I complain about the price of wiper blades. I have a very nice home and when people ask me how I can afford such a nice house I tell them because I drive Toyota's !!!

the reason why toyotas are reliable is they dont use "technology" in their engines.. naturally aspirated toyota engines will last forever with oil changes. no turbo charge no gdi, etc and this dude is telling people to look at jeeps. yikes.

I said it before, I'll say it again. When did auto journalists begin to get the idea that "very exciting handling" was the measure of all vehicles worth? Was it something you garnered when driving hwy 410 and 427 in the Toronto area? Did watching all of the idiots drive like they're at LeMans make you assume that's what everyone wanted to do? The Rav4 is a solid, good looking, good handling SUV with remarkably good fuel mileage. It's actually one of the few SUVs that gets better fuel mileage than it's EPA rating. When did using a proven engine and power-train become a faux pas? For decades drivers worshiped the small block V8 from Chevrolet but now it's a mortal sin to use a tried and true power-plant? It's time to put away all your preconceived notions and personal grudges and review cars in a more objective manner. Please, don't insult viewer's intelligence by talking about exciting SUVs; that sir, is an oxymoron. This cookie cutter approach to auto journalism is getting rather old. It's an SUV; please tell us how it stacks up for it's intended use.....

Was this car supposed to compete against a BMW M5 or something ? why do you keep on talking about performance and exciting to drive? People who buy this Rav-4, CRV and the rest dont buy any of them because their exciting to drive. Please focus on what these cars are built for and why people buy them.

I actually just bought a 2015 Rav4 XLE in August and I have to say, this is one of the best vehicles I've ever purchased. The base model of the XLE comes with navigation, bluetooth, backup camera. All things I wasn't expecting it to come with right off the bat. I primarily got it because I do a lot of camping and there's plenty of room for all my gear, but it's also great for just simple commuting to and from work. It's not a sports car, it's not meant to be a sports car. The thing I love MOST about this, is the at home maintenance is very simple. Everything is easy to get to and change and repair. Which is a big plus in my book because I do most of the maintenance myself.

I am curious though if the 2018 model will get more power. Not saying it needs it, but I will take since, I am looking to get another one in my family. I do think though they need to start putting vents like in the back of the center console for the back seat riders. Things like air conditioning.

We (the wife and I) just got one of these 2017 limited additions with 19,421 miles and I cannot believe how loaded it is. She traded in her 2015 Escape and I thought that was loaded. The only complaint she has is the steering when in park so I had to remind her put it in drive and move then you can steer it with your little finger only. Ford has an electronic steering assist (patented so Toyota cannot use) allowing the steering to be easy no matter what your shift is set at. The Toyota has much more room for passengers, fantastic sounding stereo, smoother ride and what takes the cake is Toyota's 2.5-liter engine dependability.

The older Jeeps were great, after Fiat took over they really went to shit. I loved my 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the 4.0L I6 engine actually got in the mid 20's for fuel economy on the highway, today's SUV's get that if they're lucky, many are less. The 4WD system in the Jeeps is great, not sure how the new ones are though, I've never bothered to look at one, they're ridiculously priced and their drive trains now are trash.

No problems with it in 20 years of driving, except to replace the universal joint on both front wheels and replace the catalytic converter and muffller/ pipes. It was my second jeep and it would have gone for another 1o years or more, but I decided on trying out a 2017 RAV4 XLE.

As a owner of a 2016 Rav4 Hybrid xls, I found the article accurate. Seats are a bit high for my short statured family especially for my 5ft Wife. Very Quite, at 65MPH its about 64 decibels A scale so you can keep the radio low. New York mileage is about 28 winter and 32 summer with a 50/50 highway city mix. One strange phonemom is the front sensors icing up in winter storms and the car wars to see a dealer- but simply hand removing the ice fixes the warning. I'd call this the most perfect car for me.

FWD XLE with Convenience pack was our choice. Our dealer had to go find one in another region as our region doesn't offer that combination. (Come on Toyota, let's put an end to this regional differences nonsense.)
We drove both the Rav4 and the Highlander, and my wife preferred the Rav4. We also drove some choices from the list of competitors, and always came back to the Rav4. Well, I should say she did. This vehicle is for my wife. I'd probably buy a wagon if I were in the market, but those are not popular here in the US.
One of the selling points for us was the lack of the so-called high-tech touches.
    - We don't want 20" wheels and the more expensive tires that come with them.
    - We like the idea that it has a relatively old-school 6 speed automatic instead of a CVT or a DCT that may not be well sorted. (I'd go for a 6 speed manual, but such isn't offered.) I never got accustomed to the rubber band sensation of our 2010 Altima that will be passed to one of our kids.
    - We like the proven 2.5L engine. We expect it to be as trouble free as the 2.4L engine in our 2002 Camry that we are retiring with 276K miles on the clock.
    - We didn't go for AWD as we only get a few days of snow each year, and if we do, my wife won't be going to work as school is usually called off on those days.
For under $30k out the door, we are very comfortable with the Rav4 as our choice in this segment.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 6 років тому +4

It'll never happen because these reviewers never have the vehicles long enough to give any sort of ownership costs, and many buyers...rather leasers don't have the vehicles long enough either to get any accurate numbers. Add to that many reviewers seem to drive the test vehicles like a bat out of hell rather than how a normal person drives so the numbers would be greatly skewed anyhow.
It would make much more sense to have regular everyday people do reviews rather than companies do them, you'd get far better results and much better information that would make far more sense to a potential buyer.

Too bad. The Jeep...HA ! lol. I hope they come with a lifetime warranty and a AAA card. The Honda CRV ? It's a nice vehicle but Honda's reliability slipped a bit in the past few years. The 2.5L 4 cylinder has plenty of power. They're not a racecar but they'll get up and move pretty quick if you want them to. The base model LE with AWD has plenty of features and around $24-25k they're pretty well priced.

To reduce the "floaty" steering feel, especially while on the freeway, I believe turning off the lane-departure "steering assist" makes a big difference. The steering feels snappier and seems to stay right where you want it in the lane. As I prefer smaller, sportier cars with responsive steering, this makes the RAV4 slightly more "enjoyable" for me, but it's still a very "relaxing" type of car to drive, and I appreciate that.

I couldn't agree more Binder Dundat, they all talk about "driving engagement" and "road feedback" like all cars ought to behave like a Nissan GTR, when in reality, what 99% of drivers need is a reliable, comfortable car. And since beauty is an individual perspective all cars today are going to have a public. But it has bothered me for quite some time how in the review of a Sonata, Accord, Camry, Malibu, 200C, Altima and the sort, all this guys are... "this is more sporty than this other one, or more engaging... or the feedback of the road (that's my favorite) this or that"... yes because one can take a winding road at 70 Mph, and not be worried about getting a 350 dollars speeding ticket, or like the traffic on your way back home from work would allow for an "engaging and exciting driving". You could be driving a Maranello....

I have the 2017 rav4, the platnum, a bit pricey, But it is the first time I fell in love with a car. Never had any problems with it, drives well in the snow, I can always plow into a snow pile to park, and it gets me out of that pile with no trouble. I have all the tech inside, and the first time it stopped on its own because the car in front of me slowed too much to make a turn, I just about had a heart attack, thinking something is wrong. This is my third Toyota, and now my son also have a Toyota. We are a Toyota family.

This is not the first time I've heard the ride comfort is good for a '16 -'18 Rav4 . My base LE 2013 has a very rough ride and it seems that the springs & shocks of the 2016 -2018 model are softer . I’m trying 16' wheels right now ( 17'' come standard ) and there’s no improvement , so changing springs & shocks for those of 2016 and up is a good idea ?

    some misinformation in the video:
Toyota dropped the standard power lift gate from XLE for 2017, you need XLE with convenience package to get power lift gate along with blind spot monitoring, push button start, smart key, and rear cross traffic alert.
the birds eye view is only standard on Platinum, for Limited, it comes with the advanced technology package.
I believe they also dropped the SE for 2017. (didn't spot it as of 2 weeks ago)
How did I know this? I studied the spec sheets and just bought one 2 weeks ago.

Interesting. I like the idea of the fact that you get emergency braking er front collision avoidance with all of the models, but it does seem that if you want all of the safety features while not getting the highest version, you might end up paying as much as another high end CUV as an end result.

The RAV4 could use more power, but saying Direct Injection is more advanced isn't true. Yes it would up the power, but at the probability of intake valve carbon build up. As for handling, most people buy SUV's for better snow and ice traction, and a more commanding driving position than a car. I do think it's ridiculous that every increase in trim level, comes with an increase in wheel size, I would prefer 16'' wheels, but no bigger than 17's.

I'm not sure about full "Entune" but the Telenav 'Scout' GPS in the XLE model is woefully inadequate. The lack of Android Auto may have me selecting a different manufacturer next time.
Also, I find the rear cargo compartment could use some light when the gate is open, that would be a nice touch, but it's also easily remedied in this age of inexpensive LED lighting.

I own the 2015 awd got new. The car is unsurpassed on snow packed highways and in the snow is great. But it does best w/WINTER tires, not all season(I use Avalanche square lug tires) . This will give a slightly higher road noise on the snow cleared flat top. I was a driver in the army and used to jeeps and tracked vehicles. I've always been a Jeep purchaser. I liked the clearance which was even all around and under vehicle. The one glitch is Toyota decided to run the exhaust pipe dead center under the engine in the front which is visible as a pimple. It lowers OA clearance by 1.5", and in a bad location under any vehicle at that. A reliable car for getting out of snow banks and stuck conditions. The ladies love it too and has heated seats.

I like vehicles with some muscle, that is why I have kept my 2012 Rav4 Limited with a genuine V6; the engine is noisy, but it has excellent pick up and excels with guts to pass cars quickly and safely, even up a mountain highway, and I still get 26-30 mpg, depending on whether there is a head wind or not.

  • @FoundingYouTuber

With no disrespect intended, this guy lost me when at 03:12 he recommended viewers getting a Jeep or Ford, both with POS trim. He jumped the shark when using terms like "uninvolving driving experience." WTH does that mean. If showed up to the Toyota sales floor and said "I was considering getting the RAV4, but I heard on UA-cam that it's flaw is it provides an uninvolving driving experience," I suspect the salesman would kick off the car lot, while screaming "I don't sell cars to girlie men! Go over to the Volvo lot, I hear with every car purchase they give you a free bumper sticker that says 'IT'S OK TO BE A GENTLE MAN.'"
I have a 2018 RAV4 XLE AWD. We live in San Francisco. All I have to say about the performance of my RAV4: I was at the VA Medical Center for medical care (Agent Orange exposure in Viet Nam). As we were driving home I demonstrated the manual shift to the wife, remarking that as we were traveling east on Clement I couldn't shift past second gear because there's a stop sign every two intersections. She said she didn't care about what I was doing with what she thought was an automatic transmission "thingy."
The wife LOVES our Toyota. It has a luxurious feel, it has plenty of "pep" (sorry, that's what she calls it), she feels safe in it. The AWD gives her a feel of safety in the rain and on turns. She likes that everything works. She especially likes her RAV4 when she's hot rodding around town, where her top speed the way she drives is about 35 mph. I keep the car well maintained, and spotless. The car is kept perfectly aligned.
What we like best of all, our RAV4 is the closest one can get to calling a car an investment. By that I mean the RAV4 and other Toyotas depreciate at a snail's pace. This is because these cars are like a tank in construction, everything fits, there's no rattles, and the engine and transmission are legend, many examples showing 300,000 trouble-free miles on the odometer.
That's why we love our RAV4. Oh, I have yet to take it on the freeway with a stopwatch to find out its 0 to 60 time. But I do confess, I drive with reckless abandon, meaning I roll with ECO mode OFF!!!

I've doubled its mileage and the only thing that needed to be done so far was replacing the ORIGINAL battery from 2006.

I have a 4.3 (2009) Generation Rav4 Limited. I specifically purchased it because its such a well rounded package. Reliable, comfortable and practical in every manor. It's no sports car, but I have the version with the 3.5L V6 (2GR-FE) series motor, which boasts very impressive performance. I would not hesitate to purchase a new Rav4, however only if they bring back a 6 cylinder option. An SUV of this size and weight, especially when full of cargo (in my opinion) should have 250+ tq and 250 + hp, or even better if they had the V6 from the lexus IS350 (2GR-FSE) which made about 300+ hp. Might be something for Toyota to consider with a sportier XE trim.

Nonsense. My previous vehicle was a 2013 GLK350. Traded for a limited 2016 Rav. Steering and precision are pretty equal to the previous. Handling is excellent considering that the tires are engineered for gas economy. Acceleration is 6.7 seconds to 60 using the sport mode and shifting manually starting in 4th. Refined and quiet over most road surfaces. Did a great job last New England winter season. Outstanding gas mileage and super comfortable seats. Also, I have been driving cars, all types through the years since I was 14years old back in 1969. Have owned more than 70 vehicles in that time. As far as SUVS go, I consider the Rav to be the best of its kind.

    • @kimandrews7293
      @kimandrews7293 6 років тому

It does have a true AWD but not all time AWD. It's front wheel drive until they start spinning then the back wheels engages. Most brands are like that, it's to save on fuel economy. Previous generations Toyota like the sienna(2004 to 2010)/Highlander used to have the back wheel engage at all time which makes the system better but fuel economy suffers. The reality is with these kind of vehicles most people will prefer the fuel economy over handling or AWD capability and it's fine that way.
