Usually after elementary school they stop, but in our case my mother-in-law really likes displaying the dolls even though Yuka is grown up. Yuka is 20. :) -Rachel
I have been reading the manga Love So Life, where they celebrated Hina Matsuri!! I think it's a nice way celebrate young girls from growing healthy and strong.
In Japan: We set up these dolls to protect our daughters from illness and bad fortune. In America: We set up these dolls, because we are filming a horror movie here.
The doll set was quite expensive, only middle-class or higher-middle-class families can afford to purchase the beautiful doll set. Not for all girls, well enjoy whenever you can. A great blessing to all the girls though! 🥰 A very special day for young girls in Japan!🎉🎎
Abroad in japan brought me here and i am very happy i have discovered your site. Love your work and all the info and adventures you give us. Keep up the great work. Love yr cats too. Can you do an episode on a typical family home or a walk around your neighborhood etc. cheers from new zealand😺meow
I've heard of these dolls before, they are really lovely! The music makes the video feel magical!😄 And hearing the music box brings back sweet memories for me.😊
I like cultures with Traditions. In Canada we have traditions like Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Valentines Day. But most of these are so commercialized that they have lost much of their meaning. Thanksgiving is still a great family event.
Haha pretty sweet, now I don't feel so weird about my doll collection. I have a couple of dolls (that aren't as good quality mind you) but one is a geisha and the other is simple chinese farm girl.
I saw these dolls in a game called "Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly". One of the puzzles was that you had to put them in the correct order and I never understood why. I just learned something new!
I have a doll that my dad got me when I was little on his trip to Japan. She has long hair with bangs and is wearing a red kimono. She has a stand to stand up. I love her!! :)
Ha!! This video was posted via Ikidane Nippon on Facebook and I was like that sounds like Jun’s voice!! Then I was thinking is that Rachel? Then the cats showed up, so I was pretty sure. Anyhoo, I had to click on the link just to make sure!! Hope your Girl’s Day was grand!! My Mom said that mine are mad at me because I haven’t put them out for so long. 😢
I'm very sorry for taking so long to reply. Notification didn't show up and I found your comment just now :( I don't think it would matter unless you're trying to be a model or something :) It's true that girls in Japan don't want to get scars but people don't think of you poorly even if you have scars. I think most of them would sympathize with you. -Jun
It's a really nice tradition. Is Hina Matsuri a more cultural or religious holiday? If its mostly cultural, then does that means that Christians that are considered part of the 1 percent of Japan's population or others that don't practice the Shinto or Buddhist religions could celebrate it too?
Anyway, really fasinating and I love how Japan has so much respect for one another. It's really a shame the United Kingdom doesn't have events like this and we don't treat each other like they do in Japan.
lol this reminded me of an episode of an anime, where during Hina Matsuri the dolls would have their own Hina Matsuri dolls, and their dolls as well and so on... xD
I don't think it would matter at all. People might ask you how you got the scar but it's because they're worried about you or sorry for you. I'm sorry for taking so long to reply :( - Jun
I find it interesting how some people say they admire Japanese culture and at the same time do not value the culture of their own country and their ancient religious traditions. Perhaps the fact that Christianity carries such a strong sense of sin if you embrace traditional elements from other traditions, including Christianity itself, contributed to this. The new Protestant Christianity (The Christianity of Show Business and Financial Prosperity) from the United States killed much of the religious traditions of Catholicism in Brazil. So we fell in love with Japan, which was not afraid to appear strange and even bizarre in the face of the purely practical life that has become Western life.
A little random, but: I remember a Pokémon episode where Misty and Jessie were competing in a Pokémon-match that was only for girls (it was some special girl's/women's day too) and the winner got a Pokémon-doll-set that looked a lot like these dolls. Misty also complaint that her sisters had doll sets but she never got one of her own, only the old ones from her sisters. Do you think these festivals and dolls were a Pokémon version of Hina Matsuri?
so much work goes into these dolls. i own a few myself. i love the meaning behind them too. i have some Ichimatsu dolls aswell and there so fragile arnt they? i also saw a cerimony on tv where they burned some dolls. i dident know what it was about , but i felt sorry for all those dolls and the work that went into them. 2 of my Ichimatsu dolls legs broke and i have no idea how to put them back on, there so fragile, that i just dont want to touch them now, its a shame >.
If 2 stages are already that awesome, it kinda makes me wonder how 7 stages would look like! Btw, do the samurai armour models mean anything? You know, the ones with a samurai helmet and the full body plate armour with a samurai sword.
quite a few animals respond more to your body language and tone then to the actual commands. However if you were only relying on voice commands, they would respond to the word they know.
Has Leo ever knocked part(s) of this set over? She's been around a while, I know, but some parts seem like they could fall easily, and I know that many cats like to explore things that haven't always been around.
when the girls grow up what becomes of the dolls ? is it possible for dolls to be passed onto next of kin or the next young female descendants ? I have a hard time believing that such beautiful dolls like this would certainly be put into storage and never come out again just because the girl has grown up ; clearly your mother appreciates them a lot and it's nice to see that they still get brought out , but is what your mother doing unique or is it not uncommon to simply continue bringing the dolls out even after the children grow up?
I have a scar where I was in an accident. I heard it's not good for girls to have scars or cuts in Japan. If I went to Japan, would it matter about my scar?

Jun has a really relaxing voice.
Gimmeaflakeman is Lost in Japan that’s right. Really soothing.

ASMR Sounds of Japan - Formerly Gimmeaflakeman haha
The title of the song is the same as the festival's name. It's ひなまつり(Hina-matsuri).

Getting the cat to sit at the end was pretty magical
What a beautiful and touching tradition. :-)
The picture of you two at the end is so good >.

omg... i need that music box... I LOVE IT!!!
Actually, you don't need the music box, this is a children song called Ureshii Hinamatsuri
SAME! It's like a hobby of mine to get music boxes, this is definetely on my list of wants (albeit it doesn't matter what the music box looks like)
Blad. Thanks

I’m so glad the two of you are together! Can´t wait to see all the videos you are going to make!!! ^-^

Really lovely. I liked that we are shown how you set up the display. I also like hearing Japanese being spoken as well.

That music box (I don't think it's a music box but you know what I mean) had the prettiest song!:O

Lovely tradition! ❤️ And u 2 look beautiful.
That music at the end was so pretty :)
Very pretty. The lanterns are my favorite!

What an incredible tradition. I love it. Also because I was born on the third of March.
Me too! I was just picturing all the little Pokemon dolls in their kimonos on that display xD

Agh, this still reminds me of the one time in Pokemon where there were Pokemon dolls that were dress in a similar manner...
Wow!

Jessica Mariam
It's just called 子供の日, or children's day, but it's a celebration for young boys. It's celebrated on the 5th of May.
"Give me a hug" lol
I have a scar where I was in an accident. I heard it's not good for girls to have scars or cuts in Japan. If I went to Japan, would it matter about my scar?
No, not yet :/ I hope you're alright :)
Interesting...
Navaratri in south India has dolls on steps like hina matsuri
coool
it's a nice festival I and my neighbour girl's celebrate just with anime dolls
This just made me think of Fatal Frame
The dolls are kinda scary somehow -_-" Anyways, it would be awesome to have a small set like that once in a while.

The Hina-matsuri song kinda sounds like the Rozen Maiden theme slowed down.

It says in the video. they start in February, and end on March 3rd
