I'm so reminded of those happy summer evenings when I and my family picnicked in the back yard and played games. We didn't have air conditioning, so we kept cool this way. This was back in the early 1960's when the area of my childhood near Tarrytown NY was still rural. The ninepins reminded me of a favorite Washington Irving story, Rip Van Winkle. While hunting in the Catskill Mountains, he met some strange little men wearing old Dutch clothing and playing ninepins. They were supposed to be the spirits of the crew of Henry Hudson's ship, the Half Moon.

    Ron,
Just watched the chew and chat in which you talked about your ancestors. Your family history is very similar to mine and probably many others. My family came to Virginia and North Carolina originally in the 1600s. They migrated to Tennessee and then to Missouri. My great grandfather's name was George Washington Saunders. Small world isn't it? Fun to learn about your family and the similarity to mine. My mom came to Californi where I was born and met my dad here. My husband and I really enjoy watching you and Justine and MishMish!

I love cooking outside. We recently built an outdoor fireplace. (Nothing fancy, it’s the same type my Nonno built when they moved here from Italy in the 1940’s) And it works so well. I make lots of pans of chicken and potatoes and peppers all summer. I understand what you mean about the pickled lemon. Sometimes flavors like that are so strong, it takes over the entire flavor profile of a dish. Also, I know it’s not an early American dish, but I think you and Ron would really enjoy a Panzanella salad on these hot evenings. Lots of fresh veggies, some stale toasted bread cubes and a garlic, olive oil, vinaigrette. My husband and I eat a lot of this during the summer. It’s a great use of leftovers.

I miss not having my hens, I had to give them up ten years ago because I had to move to a handicapped bungalow (I can’t weight bear anymore) and we aren’t allowed any here.
As they get older they will grow a patch of colour behind their ears the same colour as their eggshells and once it’s fully formed they will start to lay eggs - so you can tell who is laying the eggs!!!
The eggs come out really small at first, but perfectly formed!
If you make them a warmed porridge in the winter, they will give you eggs for longer!
