I owuld love to try out your cooking like onion rings, chicken and some of y our pies =) I'm Single and live alone which is hard to do
Ron, if you come across some wood you can experiment with bending and don't mind using modern materials, buy a household clothes steamer some PVC pipe and something to cap the open end of the pipe and cap the steamer end. I have seen some carpenters on HGTV use that, so I am sure there are videos on the net with tips to try. Once you get that, you can figure out how to do it the old way.
I'm with you about the water Justine. I took herbalist classes and my teacher told us a true story that really stuck with me. His teacher had a client come to him with a myriad of symptoms. After he patiently listened to all of his poor health complaints the teacher told the client to go home and drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day for 3 weeks. The client agreed, but then asked what herbs he was sending home with him? The teacher said none, but to just drink the water as he recommended, then return for a follow up appointment. The client was disappointed, but promised he would do as he recommended. When he returned, 99% of his ailments had disappeared. corrected by being properly hydrated. The herbalist then gave the client simple herbs to address the remaining ailment, and soon even that went away. Water is so important. I don't sip. I guzzle!
@@mnossy11 Yes. It can mess with your gut biome. I personally drink a quart a day and not a sip more (advice from Susun Weed, teacher of western herbalists). She actually tells people to stop drinking so much water. People that guzzle it are always thirsty for more, I've noticed.
I've studied a lot of herbalism too. My mother-in-law is a doctor of Chinese medicine and one thing I have seen similar with every single holistic approach to medicine is drinking water. I think it is critical. Look at your tongue and look at your pee!
I wasn't looking for anything like this when I found your videos. I've always liked history but this is such a creative and educational approach. I believe that your videos can be used in High School classrooms. I think it would be great to have a project where the kids have to follow a recipe from the 1800s the best way they can and write about their experience and how everything tastes. Your videos are so much fun and entertaining. They are historically accurate. When I came across the cooking videos and you weren't talking I was mesmerized. I'm like look at this person sitting here having a video and she doesn't even say a word. I was so impressed. Then, when I found Chew & Chat I couldn't stop watching
I love onion rings. My first job was at an ice cream parlor that also sold burgers, fries and onion rings. I started working there at 14. You were allowed 1 meal for free if you were on a 6 hour shift. I would always have onion rings and a vanilla shake. Still one of the best meals ever. If only my metabolism were the same. Lol!
I can't take ya'll two! Freaking adorable as heck! Justine dancing and Ron tearin' that fiddle up! LOL! I love sitting down with you two and talking with! And, especially, watching dear ole Ron be greedy with his food as usual! LOL!
Justine's dancing is the best and Ron on violin. You two put a smile on my face. Great dinner, especially in the hot summer days I love salads, fruits too. Of course the onion rings looked delicious. The furniture pieces are coming along beautifully. Really nice work. I am sorry to hear about your chicken and chick..hopefully you catch the culprit. Stay safe out there.
The first salad dressing sounds more like a mayonnaise. The cucumbers and vinegar is a thing we in the south do a lot during the summer. Just cucumbers, onion sliced then pour apple cider vinegar, salt, pepper, and a little sugar. We then set it for a bit and serve at dinner as a dish.
Ron, I think your wood work is awesome! And I think it's so cool you consider the income of your customers when setting your prices. It's so important in these times when things are so expensive and prices are continuing to rise. I love your channel and adore the both of you!
Yes Justine ! My mother would also make me scrambled eggs with tomatoes and she would also add onions too ! It was a tasty treat and I loved it !!!!!!!!
Everything looks absolutely delish. I had no idea onion rings were around for so long. I was always of the mindset, too, that they were a fair food staple in the 1900's. I love the history behind the dishes (love the original receipts included!)
In South Texas we make salsa and we cut up tomatoes and Jalopenos sauteed in olive oil and then add five eggs and scramble them. To make the salsa: boil about 4 tomatoes with one jalopeno and two cloves of fresh garlic (also add cilantro if you want) and then when they are cooked ; put them a blender and serve it over the scrambled vegetable egg mixture. Best served with fresh corn tortillas.
Oh my how we so enjoy this channel! Ron and Justine, you truly are the best. Now I'm hungry for onion rings...ugh Lol. (btw, sorry to hear about the chickens.)
salads are soo healthy,,,,, I appreciate you addressing the health of salads in our early american years in this country and Europe! great work to justine and ron!!!!! still healthy to this day!!!!! love your research and cooking with onion rings and salads when the vegetables were available in the spring and summer!!!!
Justine, would you consider putting out a cookbook? That would be great!! A-1 sauce has anchovies in it. 😋 I lost it when the axe came out!! Lol... you two are hilarious 😂!! I'm really sorry about the loss of your chickens, though, that's so sad 😔
Congratulations on your engagement! If you do end up looking into a gift registry, there are so many places people can send you gifts or gift cards that are period accurate like “Townsends” & “Allegheny Treenware”!
Justine, I am glad you love this man. That mouth washing thing was truly awful!! Bless you both. I would love to see an episode of sausage making! That would be wonderful. Please do consider making one in the fall.
My husband and I recently discovered your channels and we love them! Thank you for sharing your experiences, your videos are so fun to watch. God bless you both, sending love from Canada 😊
Did they have ketchup back then ? I like my onion rings with ketchup .So glad your garden is doing so well .It's been really hot and dry here in Massachusetts .
They're like parmesan crisps as the onion ring batter, cool. I was laughing though at the mention of fried eggs and tomatoes. That's also a dish my mom made for me as a kid but more importantly, it's a common Chinese dish too. So I'm just seeing everyone else around the world, centuries back, when these bright red confusing fruits across the oceans start making it to markets, going: "Uh well, ...what do we do with these?" "Eggs. Can't go wrong with eggs" "Eggs, safe bet."
Don’t forget that you get the benefit of getting even more water by eating fresh fruits too. Nice little bonus! Ron your furnishings are outstanding! Loved it all! 😍
I love the background ambiance of the insects .🥰. it is just beautiful. Ron & Justine, you both are incredibly creative and skilled. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. God bless you both!
Pretty much any food back then (in moderation) did the body good not only because it was natural, but because fellas worked on the field or had to walk to their destination. Thus all that food was actively being digested instead of packing up pounds because nowadays we sit mostly at an office at work and drive around instead of walking.
I love watching the two of you! I am learning so much about the Frontier life, and when you two are being silly with one another, You make me smile from ear to ear. Justine, You are not alone when it comes to the hot bathes. The hotter, the better:) Thank you for sharing your videos. I look forward to them!
Frying in oil goes back at least a couple of millennia BC, and originates from the Fertile Crescent where neolithic farming originated. Onion remains have been found ancient Egyptian tombs, and are thought to have originated in Asia during the bronze age. Flour from ancient grains comes out of the Fertile Crescent as well, and is part of the group of Founder Crops of the Fertile Crescent, which include einkorn wheat, emmer wheat, barley, lentil, pea, chickpea, bitter vetch, and flax.
Here in Britain we had salads in the medieval times and then they were called "salat" and they were quite different to today's. They included edible flowers.

Thank you as I need to constantly remind myself to drink water now that I'm older.
I am a huge water drinker too! It does work wonders for so many things!
Water is great, but too much will flush out vital minerals. Moderation in everything!
