    Thank you so much for all your videos, I love them, I have a lot of sterling marked charms, chains, etc that test positive for sterling and are magnetic, I read that the coating (I think it is rhodium) that prevents tarnish is magnetic and causes this to happen, I scratch 3-4 times on the stone until I get to the silver underneath and then it tests positive, because the first time it will show it is not sterling but with perseverance I do get a blue/white positive result with 18k acid. I wanted to share that you can test with the sterling acid and get red on a tissue for sterling testing too, I use a square of toilet paper and fold it in half and then in half again, scratch the stone with the sterling piece and put the silver test acid on that and wipe the area and quickly look at it as the red goes away fast, as long as I see red then I know, if you get blackish color it is not...just my experience ;-) also you can tell right away by the color scratched if it is not, I have had pieces that were not magnetic, had the 925 stamp and show copper looking streaks on the stone, of course it tested negative...

    Hi, with the mark 95, that is silver plated! Silver is always marked with 3 digits , generally from 800 and up. Same is for gold, 3 digits ; 333 (8 crt) and up.

    I have had this problem with silver for years i heard it depends on the manufacture trying different metals so dont tarnish the problem is if you ever need noney as soon as the magnet hits nobody touches siver is not regulated like gold so they put whatever metal mix to make up the the rest of the metals

    Hello, I watched a video testing of silver on another channel that I am unable to remember, but I think it was on one of the silver stacking channels and he showed testing with the same kit. The difference is that he did the silver tests using the the correct silver acid on the correct test stone. He placed the acid over the silver scratch and then used a paper towel to wiped it off the black stone and by doing that he was able to show the result pretty clearly. From my fading memory I think he was testing known fake silver dollar coins with the result being like yours of the mark disappearing from the red dye on the paper towel.
    I like the knowledge and honesty you share. I ended up with my mom and Grandmother’s jewelry and other from JTV, HSN, QVC and many styles of Navajo silver & turquoise jewelry and I started to research different things I ended up buying. More stuff that is probably questionable of value but one rhinestone tiara came in useful for my 4 year old niece and her princess party. Take care.

  • @bunny114
    @bunny114 4 роки тому +5

    To add to this very informative video, that does an excellent job of teaching people how to test and how to protect themselves, I figured I would add WHY sterling can be magnetic.
    Anything stamped 925 legally has to be 925 parts per 1000 silver, or 92.5% or higher. The remaining 7.5% is typically copper, which is also not magnetic, however there are no regulatory bodies stating what the other 7.5% has to be. It can be things like iron, nickel, anything with a reasonable level of workability.
    Now onto the most common cause for sterling to be magnetic. Rhodium plating. If it has been given a rhodium plate it will have a nickel underplate and react to a magnet. Based on the lack of tarnish, I'm betting that was the case here. It's still 925, but the rhodium acts like a layer of turtle wax to protect it, and I take it to be a sign of quality. If it's a rhodium dip with no underplate, you shouldn't see a magnetic reaction.
    This is not to say companies do not lie and stamp things as what they are not, this is just why sterling may test as megnetic.
    Love your videos, they're keeping me sane during quarantine!

    • @tbacon2784
      @tbacon2784 4 роки тому +1

      I agree with why it may be Sterling yet magnetic. I always have to test. I break out with some silver jewelry that is magnetic, but if not magnetic I can wear it forever. I didn't understand at first, but someone at a pawn shop explained it to me a few years ago. Looked it up on the internet for a second opinion and now I can wear silver as well as gold!

    • @bunny114
      @bunny114 4 роки тому +1

      @@tbacon2784 That's understandable. While allergies to rhodium aren't as common, nickel allergies are VERY common and that's a good possibility to what you were reacting to in it.

    Hey just so you know there is sterling silver out there made with nickel instead of copper and the ones made with nickel are magnetic it just depends on the base metal used to make the sterling but always acid test to make shure
    O that nickel one is not always rhodium plated there are pieces going back before the 70s they were using nickel instead of copper and them Sterling and those were not rhodium-plated it is also the reason a lot of his Jewelers do not use the magnetic test

    and just as an aside. lots of italy silver is of a different configuration for the amount of silver. some native vintage jewelry still used coins too that have various metals in them. and some artisians from asia found different formulas for different types of metalworking. before about 1900 or so it was a mish mash. but too in italy the catholic church made their own religious medals and i would bet a tin hat that they used the minimum amount of pure valuable metals to use in their pours. thank goodness i rarely do anything with modern jewelry. cause all those 925 rings selling on wish are just silver plate in varying thicknesses. I remember when i first found wish. oh my. i was buying rings for a buck or two and selling for 25 dollars at my thrift store and they were flying. then my clerk after about 3 months, the early plate was very high quality, started showing some copper. dang. i was so sad. i had to quit selling at 25 and started selling for 5.95 with the caveat that they were like cocktail rings and couldnt be worn 24/7 only for special occasions. the most recent 925 from wish start showing copper in a few wearings.

    Hey? I wanted to let you know that I watched another’s jewelry unboxing video and I was totally bummed!
    She spent half the time off camera talking about the item but all we saw was the table. Then, after that she’d put the piece down and say some new stuff. I got VERY frustrated!
    I wanted to comment & say, “You need to watch Texas Gal Treasures to see how it’s done right!” I didn’t b/c I figured she had enough followers that like her. But man! I don’t understand why you wouldn’t ALWAYS put the item down for the audience to see.
    She also never mentioned any resale prices. None. Apparently we have to go to her reselling page?
    She had an amazing jar of goodies (12/19) for $39.95 from Goodwill, blue box. It seemed like her items were all very high value. She said one item was real pearls w/ a diamond chip. It was never close enough to see if it sparkled like a diamond though. So I wouldn’t trust that it was w/o proof. One wonders what value she put on it??
    Anyway, thank you for always making sure we can SEE whatever you’re describing. It really makes a difference!
