Fantastic! Finally a video that really helped me find out about silver. Some things i thought were silver are actually white gold, and others now I know they are silver. Thanks!!!
Glad I could help! I was having the same problem! After a bunch of videos, I found someone who used this method. It’s so much easier to tell if it’s silver, I had to show it too!
@@deana1111 awesome! I was having a lot of trouble using acid tests for silver. I looked at a ton of videos and only found one showing this method. Had to make one of my own to help spread the word!
Thanks for explaining it a bit further. I was having a real hard time looking at the stone & acid bead itself. All I could see was a black blob. Looking at your drops, they look as black as mine! I've watched people testing and they seemed to just look and know. I was sure my acid was bad. But now I'll try again and see if I can make it work. When they say it might show as creamy white, how will you see that? Now, if I can just get used to my Kee gold tester, I'll be in business!
Many people use the 18k but for accurate results and to know the purity of silver you are checking ,the silver solution is best but it can be complicated to understand, which makes sense why people use the 18 k.
@peggipenfold4580 not really, it’s likely that there wouldn’t be anything on the tissue afterwards. But if there is, and it’s not red, it’s probably not solid silver
That's how I test as well. I don't know if you have heard this but I have been told these acids only have a short shelf life. Once opened a few months. Have you noticed or heard this? I wondered because I have done a couple of tests on known items and they failed. My acids are 2 years old. Ill order some new and retest. Thanks for posting,,,
That’s interesting! I have not heard that, but I’ll definitely check for sure. My acids are relatively new, but I’m interested to see how they react with age. Thanks for the info!
Spot are you silver acid that has sat for like a year since I had tested and it did the same thing it gave me negative results but I knew acid got correct results definitely has a shelflife once it’s opened
The gold is a bit different as far as I know. With gold, the acid will make the line disappear from the stone. I may make a video about gold in the future.
Hey great video, thanks! 🙏 Please can you let me know which acid you're using? (I saw a video where the guy recommends using 18 Kt Gold testing Acid - but I think that gave a different colour... 🧐 ) Thanks in advance, Bobby (UK) ☺
I just took a Tiffany and Co. bracelet to a pawnshop and they tested it for silver and said that it came back red so it’s not silver, are they lying to me?
Next time - space out the scratchings... also - what about 45% silver test? I'm about to buy a roll of silver solder from a guy on Ebay and I'll meet him locally with the test kit.
I just use the acid that’s meant for testing silver in the precious metal testing kits they sell on Amazon. I believe it contains nitric and muriatic acid
@@TheFinderGuyno not nitric and muriatic(aqua regia) What you have is known as Schwerter's solution. Concentrated nitric acid 3/4 of one ounce, water 1/4 ounce and I believe 1 gram of potassium dichromate. There are videos that show you how to make it. I believe Sreetips on UA-cam has a video. Hope this helps.
@@TheFinderGuy I see. The reason I know is aqua regia will almost immediately precipitate silver chloride(looks like snow in the liquid) Schwerter's turns red, the more pure your silver the more it will look like blood. At 800 fine silver it will appear brown red. Doesn't work well on 500 fine.
@lancemillward2462 it might be possible, but I personally can’t tell the difference. Some pawn or coin shops have those machines. I recommend calling around to see who has one in you area
Well done! I have seen several of these videos and yours is the clearest, most detailed but still concise.
Thank you! I appreciate that
Your video is the best silver testing video EVER !!
Thanks! Also….now I want a whopper
Thank you so much. You saved me an hour of research.
No problem!
Thanks for the very helpful video.
You’re absolutely welcome!
Thanks so very much! This is super helpful!! It is so difficult to see from just putting the acid on the silver.
No problem! Happy to help!

Oh! Thank you so much. I've been so confused.
No problem at all! Glad I could help!
Very helpful as I have that acid test, was difficult to see if it was red through the wet acid drop, Thanks for the tip 😉
Glad I could help! I had to do a video…it’s wicked hard to tell when it’s on the stone!
I know it has been a year, wipe the solution with a white paper towel to see the color with more definition.
THANK YOU! I could nit understand how one could tell....the paper towels does it!
You’re absolutely welcome!
So smart! Thanks
No problem!
Thank you for showing us how to test for silver! I was just looking at the lines on the black stone and couldn't figure out why I wasn't seeing color.

Nice tip buddy thanks for sharing
Absolutely! Trying to get the word out! It works so well, I wish they put it in the instructions!
I was having a horrible time seeing the colors after a few eye surgeries. Thank you so much for this information!
Glad I could help! I was having a hard time as well until I found this, had to share it!
Wipe your test off your stone with a white paper towel. You can see the color more vividly.
Hi where are you. Iam india🇮🇳🇮🇳
@moviestudiosonysharma1 hello! I’m located in the U.S.
By far the best way of acid testing silver!
I absolutely agree!! Thanks Rusty!
Right, But how I'll identify the carrat of the silver anyone know....?
I’m not sure about that one. Some jewelers and coin shops have a machine that can check purity.
Thank you this is very helpful. 😊

I went to my local tile supplier and got a white tile... he gave me a free offcut.
Works well.
Never thought of that! That’s a good idea!
Or you can just use the 18k acid it turns blue it's silver!
Agreed I use the 18k test
I like using the 18k acid too.
What it is if it turns green?
@Juampi536 I’m not sure. My best guess would be that it’s not silver 🤷🏻♂️

You can also use a white stone to see the color better.
I’m sure that would work as well

No problem! I’m not sure about the creamy white, I haven’t heard that. Gold can definitely be tricky, especially with heavily plated items
thanks for the video very helpful just ordered some testing acid i have a bunch of jewelry i want to test out that is unmarked
Good luck! Hope it’s precious metal!

Is that black stone a sharpening block for knives? where do i find one of those
No, it came with the precious metal testing kit I bought. I believe I got it on Amazon
Loved the video thank you. How do you know if it is only Silver Plates
No problem! Usually it is only a very thin layer of silver, and when you search it on the stone, it may show the base metal underneath
Would that show another color ? I’m new at this 🧐
@peggipenfold4580 not really, it’s likely that there wouldn’t be anything on the tissue afterwards. But if there is, and it’s not red, it’s probably not solid silver

Very cool. I struggle to see it on the stone.
Me too! This trick is like night and day! Thanks for checking it out
I need to do this on a random piece of jewlery i found, it seems like silver vut theres no marking on it
Good luck! Hope it’s silver!
👍
What should I use to clean the testing stone?
I put it in a mixture of baking soda and water for a minute or so to neutralize the acid. Then give it a dunce with regular water
Can you test a gold to that kind of test like you test your silver ? Or it's different?
The gold is a bit different as far as I know. With gold, the acid will make the line disappear from the stone. I may make a video about gold in the future.
What kt,of acid did you use ? I've heard to use 14 kt.
I’ve never used the gold testing acid for silver. I use the acid specifically for testing silver. It contains nitric and muriatic acid

I haven’t tried it on anything less than 90%. I imagine it would would still work to some extent
Nice & easy- thanks
Is there any way to tell 925 from 800 silver? Will they test the same color??
As many Mexico pieces are 800 or unmarked so how do you know? Ty!
I’m not sure on that one. Sorry, wish I could be more help
what is name for acid you use?

How about silver plated?
I don’t believe the thin amount of silver plating would show up with the test

I think it's nitric acid...
Nitric is water clear so it probably has potassium dichromate added
Acid name pls?

What kind or Acid ?
Nitric acid I believe
