This was my favorite tree for a long time. They're all over San Diego and are super adaptable to NorCal but rarely seen there. I've only ever seen one specimen in Walnut Creek at the intersection of Castle Rock and North Gate Rd. But they need really good pruning to avoid limb breakage. Yours is perfect. For most people, it may be too big, too messy, and too prone to wind damage. But it's worth it!
I planted that tree on North Gate at my buddy Tibor's house. I installed that landscape. I'm not sure if he ever pruned it. I saw a whole parking lot of Tipu trees at a Stockton Home Depot thriving and looking gorgeous under total neglect. I'm sure they used a Southern California landscape designer for if they used a Norhthern California designer, the trees would surely not be hardy enough and therefore not be used. Duh.
Gary Gragg's True Plant Stories Cool story! Yeah, NorCal designers are mostly ignorant and disinterested. We used to buy our exotics in the 80s and 90s at Highland Nursery in Pittsburg (not sure if it's still there). They were the only place that carried sapote, mac nuts, etc. back in the day.
Was yours so skinny it couldn’t stand on its own? Mine is eight foot tall but so skinny I have to stake it good. Will it thicken up if I leave it alone?
no so close, is very big Tree, it can measure 40 meters tall, this tree grows in the rainforest, is very Beautiful, in Buenos Aires you can see it in every Park , this tree need space
We planted a Tipu tree a year ago in honor of my son who passed away in a car accident. Recently during our monsoon season (Arizona) it blew down. Oddly enough it didn't break, but the whole tree and truck were bent laying on the ground. We anchored it back up to support it, but now a few months later the branches are starting to look bare, and it is looking very dry and brittle. I'm afraid we may lose the tree. The tree it very weak and needs the supports to stand up. Is there any advice you can give us? This tree means ALOT to our family. Thank you in advance.
I'm very sorry to hear about that. And of course it makes it worse when you put a tree in like this for memorial and something like this happens. I've done the same and it makes me think I should've put a big rock in instead. What you may think about doing is severely cutting this tree back almost to the main trunk or with just a few scaffold branches and getting it right it up and watered really well then hopefully it will sprout out new leaves and start growing again. You might not know if it's going to make it until June of next year as they do often lose their leaves and they are very slow to make new ones very late in the spring, much later than most all other trees. I hope this helps and I am cheering for your tree. Thanks
You are a true tree wizard! This one is a beauty!

Originally from Bolivia. The nativos call it Jacarandá (hakaran-dáh, with the stress towards the end) also in yellow or white named Tajibo (ta-hi-bow)
The music was amazing
I know. thanks for noticing. "Outlawed" as a joke that it is so coomon in So Cal yet super rare in Nor Cal for no reason.

How close could I plant it to the house. I'm worried about the roots damaging the foundation.
