The 5 Mechanics That Will Become The META In 2023

- It's that time of year again. These are my predictions for the Rocket League mechanics that will become the META in 2023. Particularly in the RLCS, pros tend to utilize specific mechanics each year more than that of previous years, so these are my expectations for this year in pro Rocket League.
Thanks to @Gregan_Mike for helping with the last mechanic!

If you've watched the RLCS for a while, you know that professional players continue to implement new ways of scoring into their gameplay every single year. I analyzed hours of recent professional gameplay to predict where holes are in the current META and how pros will fill those holes as quick as possible. Feel free to share what your predictions are! These are the 5 mechanics that I think will become the META in 2023.

Loved coming up with ideas for this with you!
Great video Wayton 😄
Love your videos dude ❤
Great to see two minds work together within the community! The Gen G play was just too clever, the break down from Gregan was too good not to include rather than repeat. :)
I love this series and Gregan's analysis in general. I'm excited to see more creative team plays in the future
I have an idea! what if you go for a fake but also getting a reset off the ball so you will still have a bit of momentum after you fake. It would also be a better fake over all since the defence would be thinking your gunna do a flip reset
Wregan
The new idea for passing is very similar to quicks in volleyball, once blockers got to a stage at which they could block any spike, setters had to start setting the ball quicker, the only way for this to happen is for the spikers to already jump before the set happens. Definetly the future for RL.
New meta is gonna be ceiling defense. Its already meta in 1s. And in 3s u even have 2 players covering you. So why not in 3s as well?
I think it lays on where you play then, I’ve been doing ceiling defenses lots in all playlists since like 2021 but still barely see it around my region and rank (EU and GC1) respectively
Hope it becomes more META, but also not as people barely see it coming lol.
@@vruscryaotic1830 Can only compare to like 1600 but if youre actually trying to defend the ceiling you maybe get a 50 or miss and need a lot of time and/or boost to recover. Meta is still more or less that the first defender challenges and defends a high shot so the goalie has an easy clear.
@@skesh9572 Also GC2, it doesn't take a lot of boost when you ceiling challenge and you cut of the play in the middle of the setup, which results in a dunk, a free clear or at worst a good 50. This is ofc if you challenge correctly (using your dodge, putting all your momentum into it, aswell as the time of the challenge). What is also very effective is a fake ceiling challenge. Go for a really obvious one, just before your car falls of the curve of the ceiling, turn around. You could also do a more aggresive fake by double jumping off the ceiling (using your neutral jump to get down quickly).
Also to counter a ceiling challenge if you see your opponent doing it before you hit the ball, fake the entire aerial or go for a low aerial. If you see them going for it after you've already hit the ball. Fake and position for the 50 that might occur. This second option does leave you vulnerable to the fake ceiling challenge I mentioned earlier.
@@skesh9572 btw the first defender should cover low while the second one is on backboard. (in the meta you described). ApparentlyJack has a great explenation as to why you should do this.

The "deception" is actually surprising it took this long for pros to take on. it's something I learned from playing sports years ago and do it all the time in RL.
Pro gamers aren't exactly getting real world experience like normal people
@@trevorjohnson2168 surprisingly a lot of current rl pros got into the game from other sports like hockey or football
It's not that they did not know it, it's just that it was not worth it at high level until recently. Deception is basically a fake (that's not new) but it involves 2/3 of the team, so if you fucked up you potentially get two players out of position (+ low boost) and a 1v3 (99.99% a goal at pro level). It's just interesting know because player got excellent recoveries (so it's not as dangerous) and defense are getting so good you have to take more risk (so the smaller risk is more worth it). But if you play really for fun or at low level (below gc) it was doable a long time ago indeed
Exactly lol. Jump pass shoot is basically the through ball and deception is faking from football smh. Cannot believe these are so under utilized
@@curiouscatto6148 defensive fakes are even better. That's what comes next. It's already happening in games it's just the content creators are finally noticing it which will start the idea that players are just now incorporating it... they've been doing it all along. Essentially pro rocket league doesnt consist of the best players it is actually based on exciting and likeable personalities.

I do some team pinches with my friend ocassionaly and when they are executed perfectly its just amazing
I did one accidentally with my friend
I do it in casual. We have it not that consistent. So ranked would be asking for a lose
Great video! I love the visuals you use when explaining the stratus ( for example the teampinch and the area of the balls reach )
With plays becoming more and more important somewhere near the ceiling, due to how difficult they are to read, I expect ceiling defense to become a lot more common, but also I expect that ceiling wave dashes to also be something we might see more often in order to keep a pin to the ceiling for longer and to have extra preparation for ceiling plays.
One more thing that I observed which is rather for 1s and 2s: RW9's wavedash challenges behind the ball are incredibly strong and almost nobody is doing this so far. I guess thisll be a thing more often and definitely change the 1s meta more than pogos or zapdashes.
I always appreciate your tutorials and explanations in game. I’ve decided to start my own channel of myself (plat/ diamond) attempting to improve and get to grand champ (hopefully) through the tutorials of streamers/ training packs/ and free play along with games of course. Looking forward to more of your tutorials and strategies!
REALLY awesome presentation! Really understood what you were trying to say, great work
This was a great video and it’s amazing you called it that walldashing would be meta. But I can’t believe you didn’t mention ground double taps (where you bounce it to the ground and then double it in, instead of to the ceiling), I’ve seen them growing in popularity and it’s super unexpected. Also I love the way that you try to analyze your understanding of the game to find plays that could actually become meta, and not just the most recent mechanics that look cool
Yeah, I think that I also agree that these will become the meta. These mechanics are so underused and should defo but used more especially pre jump imo. Good vid Wayton you are a legend.

I was waiting to see the clip of appJack saving an insanely fast and strong team pinch from SMPR last year. SMPR clearly and purposfully setup the team pinch just like Wayton talks about in the video
Team pinch by accident has happened to me more than 5 times only from the past . One team pinch I cannot forget is when I was in 3s . The kickoff ended as a team pinch hitting more than 130KPH . I was soo shocked of the goal .
Flick I’m currently trying to perfect: dribbling towards your goal, get the ball at the very back of your car, jump, tilt forward, half flip such that you pop the ball up behind you and your flipped/rotated car is directly under it, and air dribble over the defenders. Probably not actually viable because have to switch camera mid mechanic and it’s not advisable to pop the ball up with a low percentage play in front of your own goal. Still fun to practice tho, and I’m pretty sure it doesn’t exist yet, so I’m trying to hit it in game at least once so I can name it 😅
I was predicting more ceiling plays this year as well. Fairly easy to do and keeps the pace of the game fast and slightly more unpredictable.
This was phenomenal. Of all the games I play, rocket league is more of a couple times a month casual hang out with the friends. But this analysis stuff was suuuuper entertaining for me. Makes me wanna play and watch comp

you were spot on with the ceiling reset. zen's most iconic move is a ceiling pinch double tap
This video was really entertaining to watch, it went by so fast I didn’t even noticed

Your videos are always of great quality 👏
The Fake-go for a shot is a superb way to give the next mate a great pass/clean ball, as long as the game situation allows it. I realized that very early in the game and it's working great nearly thru all ranks
It's interesting that me and my 2s partner started shifting towards prejumps, inspired by haikyuu and team pinches from our side of the field around mid November- begin Decemeber. Curious to see if it makes it into RLCS. Great predictions this year :)
Excellent video!
Something i do a lat and works every time is i go for a shot like I’d hit it to the front and then dodge sideways so i hit it to the right/left
The first time I remember the ceiling reset was at the Dallas dreamhack in like 2018 or so (the one cloud 9 won) torment got bumped after a touch to the ceiling then scored with the reset
Great video, definitely on the money about the team pinches, I can 100% see that being incorporated as a legitimate tactic

Whenever I'm in net and the ball comes rolling into of my corners, opponents expect me to shoot it straight down the field - and my car language says likewise - but I always fool them by hitting the ball into the corner for a ricochet down the field, thereby making them miss every time they try to stop my clear

Good thing I learned the zap dash after watching your other video. :) w information
Feels like a shoutout for Flakes is missing from the deception segment. Other than powerslide cuts, threatening one thing and doing another was the other big takeaway from his road to SSL videos.
The production value of this video is so good! It's easy to just pay attention to the video's content (because it's been so well made), but if you start to pay attention to how it's been put together, it's fantastic! So well done @wayton
Also, regarding the team pinch idea. Yes, I can totally see this being utilized in high level play, but anything less than GC would be a bad idea. I (with my diamond understanding of the game) would see it as a very low percentage play. If Diamonds and Champs want to do this to me, feel free. You're taking a long range effort with huge precision, timing and understanding needed instead of taking the ball further up the pitch for a better chance at goal.
I'm C2/C3 and regularly play with the same friend. We do intentional pinches for clears after a long siege when neither of us can get much boost and we have pretty good success with it. We aren't necessarily trying to score it but even at C2, we can regularly get the pinch clear which effectively allows us to reset. All that to say, it has uses outside of just scoring goals and I agree that GCs and up could use it as an effective attacking option
Been Wayton for this🎉😅👍

I like the amount of randomness put into the names wayton uses for the mechanics 😂
We mess with these in my private matches all the time. We call the dummy aerials “fakes” or “fakeys”, and team pinches are an risky if they pop up or go slow, but are good for clearing. I’d say that Rizzo and Sizz used to “fake” a ton in their old videos from 2017/18+. Catching your own ball in a floor or ceiling bounce is just a pain, but can also be pinched…
Yo Sultan getting clipped on with prejumps in the vid I love it haha
The zap dash looks like it uses alot of space, but it could be great for rotating back to defense after a play.
i feel like its gonna become one of those "everyone does them at a certain rank everywhere just for the tiny bit of extra speed" moves, nothing game changing but will just increase the speed at higher level plays a bit
*donkey dash
@@richnickacallate
@@richnicka zap dash
I started doing this over the past week around 1500s in 2s. Really good for gaining momentum after landing off a backboard clear, and a speedflip + zapdash is great when rushing back to defense if you have low boost. From a 5h session I had 3 instances where it was actually necessary, and another 7 where it saved boost on recoveries. Keeping in mind these results and that I'm still learning to be consistent with it, I'd say this will become a staple of high gc1 and up within the year.
Great video! :)

bro that transition in that aztral prejump play was crazy
I recently learned the zapdash and i gota say the ZapDash is so useful even if it’s not fully consistent, it is not risky so i recommend learning this
Also when people say things like they wont lead to goals i dont agree, anything that will directly effect your comfortability getting up to speed will make you more confident in compromising positions. Meaning yes the mechanic wasnt what got you the goal but it was however what made you be in position to score it in the first place
@@sneakmoreYes, the mechanic was the reason you were in position to score the goal
Its amazing to me that the Zap Dash is its own mechanic and people are using it. I was the FIRST person to discover it in 2019 where part of reddit it bashed me for it being an unuseful mechanic.
5:57 if you do the “zap dash” with an empty jump to pop your car up its actually called a heli jump
?
@@gnashr4366 yes. Dashers have been using it for some time before the “zap dash”
Here after worlds, spot on with the pre jump🤝

TX for my mechanic (Zap dash)
I do fakeout plays for my teammates all the time. Always by accident of simply missing, but it is usually pretty effective if my teammate is better than me.
I love hitting pinches off walls near the enemy corner. Where they usually say it's bad to be, I find success in doing exactly what you said; slow down the play, bait enemy players and speed it back up again before they can react or expect it.
I like air dribbling from one side of my back half or back wall to the opposite wall and going for a pinch. Like the same position as a kuxir but higher on the wall. Takes a lot of boost, but it's nice when you pull it off.
Calculated pinches out of opponent corners is under rated(pinch pass). Sometimes you can get a good one off their backwall. A good pinch doesn't need to be fast or always a shot imo.
I wish Garrets banger of a ceiling reset from a couple of seasons ago was shown as an example. That’s my favorite example of a ceiling reset.
Another W video Wayton!
I was just rewatching your eversax dribbling course and I was thinking
"When is he gonna do another vid?"
lol i’ve seen the ceiling dash in my 2v2 diamond games bc , SO MANY GODDAMN FREESTYLERS
wayton for the team pinch kassio and archie did it in the fall major 2021-2022 the pinch went so high but appjack saved it! even tho it was like 140kp+.
I feel proud of using deception and creative variations of fakes in my games for years now. It feels super rewarding when you can pull it off and score out of it.
This video is amazing but i can never forget Efficience Maximuzed lol 1:22
Plan B is the best example of "deception" in a solo moove, should be there it's really powerful when you haven't enough boost to play just fake the mechanical play at the last possible moment go under and insane plan b shot to corner, unsavable. The pogos are really getting popular but they should be just for recoveries the true revolution based on pogoing is the Plan B and the best mechanical players of the world (all french because we are too good like Zen and Juicy) understood this and are using this a lot. Also I would say a lot of more mechanics from freestyling like just redirecting the ball in any situation (sidewalls, corners, from the backboard ( psycho), from the ceilling...) and maybe just new ways to get resets that can be more efficient to adapt at any possible setup (maktuf reset, helli stalls, front flip reset like dark is doing...)
Rocket league is such a great game, the ever evolving meta and new discoveries and incredible skill ceiling.
Insane new meta stuffs🥶

I did the wall Dash after practicing it in a tournament by accident and help me get to the ball very fast with no boost
Deception been a meta tho just being unpredictable is been the key to pro gameplay since theyve started to become good
MajicBear has also started doing the zap dash too a lot in his vids and it looks very promising
I was Silver three and now I’m champion to your UA-cam channel helps so much keep up the good work
I think the problem with team pinches is that if it is more likely to miss than to go in some of the time, and if it does miss, they they give up possession. Also, if they mess up the pinch part, the opponents (in they are near) can easily have a good scoring chance as 2-3 players have just committed for the pinch, possibly putting them in an awkward position to defend from.
The result doesn't always have to be a goal tho, could also be used for clears
