Panduranga, also known as Vitthala or Vithoba, is a form of Lord Krishna, mainly popular in Maharashtra and the Karnataka states of India. There is a separate sect dedicated to him whose followers believe that he is the Ultimate God, i.e., the creator, sustainer, and destroyer of the universe. His main temple is in Pandharpur in Maharashtra, which is the most popular religious place in the state. Vitthala is known for being the savior of the poet-saints of the Varkari faith, who were known for the abhang, a unique type of devotional lyric, which they dedicated to Vitthala and composed in Marathi. Vitthala also has other devotional literature written for him, including the Kannada hymns of the Jaridasa and some Marathi versions of aarti songs, which are used in rituals of offering light to the god.
The poet believes that the body and soul is closely entwined. Both are unified and travel together in a boat from, through and to Vitthala. The poet has full faith in the supremacy of Vitthala and has full confidence in his grace and blessings.
He likes Pandari (Pandharpur) that is situated on the banks of the river Chandrabhaga (river). Its might and worth is similar to the rivers like Ganga and Jamuna. The poet is also fond of the river Padma and Garudapaara, the mount of Lord Vitthala (maauli).
The poet Namdev says that he bows down to Vitthala and Rakkumaayi, the consort of Vitthala. He needs no bondage with this world and its materialistic pursuits because he is fortunate to have received the grace of Paanduranga.
The poet believes in the omnipresent Vitthala . God is Vitthala, his puja is Vitthala.
The river and its banks are also Vitthala. Mother, father, friends, family and even the forefathers are Vitthala. Guru and the lineage of Gurus also constituteVitthala.
The poet says that the wisdom of Vitthala comes slowly, but when it comes, it stays forever. Namdev says that he saw Vitthala and the only way to survive this Kaliyuga is by chanting His name.
