- John Grisham is considered a master storyteller. Worldwide, the bestselling author has sold nearly 300 million copies of his books. Since "The Pelican Brief" in 1992, Grisham has had 28 consecutive No. 1 New York Times fiction bestsellers. Grisham joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss his new novel, "The Whistler," involving a crooked judge, gambling and millions of dollars in stolen cash.
I am astonished at the number and level of mischaracterizations regarding Native American gaming, made by Mr. Grisham in that CBS interview. As a 20-year Native American gaming professional, I am also deeply offended. Write all the fiction that you want, Mr. Grisham. We all get it. You have every right to fabricate whatever story you think will sell books. You're obviously one of the best, ever. Right on. Good job. However, in that interview, you weren't citing passages from your book. You were speaking directly about something that you claimed to have researched. You, obviously, did not even scratch the surface. You might be a great writer but if you think that you learned about Indian Gaming, you're a horrible researcher. Maybe go take a class at the local community college? Learn how to do research? Do you have even the slightest inkling of how many Native Americans you alienated and offended with those statements. There are thousands upon thousands of people that work either directly in gaming operations or regulatory positions. Thousands upon thousands of people that pride themselves on operating in compliance with regulations at local, tribal, state and federal levels. Thousands upon thousands of people the pride themselves on operating with integrity, all of whom you have offended. You might want to start writing your apology before you start your next book. A great many of those people that you offended are the same people that used to buy your books. In the past tense...
What a disappointing interview! I have worked in the Indian Gaming industry for 20 years and am offended by the opinions cited as fact regarding no oversight and numerous careless statements which don't support Mr. Grisham's claim to have conducted research. Mr. Grisham's interview alluded to his knack for fiction story telling.
Mr.Grisham this is very true. I worked for tribal gaming for a long time. My friend is in the process of writing a book basically on this topic with supporting details from other employees.
Okay.

Cannot wait to read this one. I love every book Mr. Grisham has ever written. My favorite fiction author period..... love him.
Great writer, loved this Book!
I am completely offended that CBS allowed Mr Grisham to shame Tribal Gaming in such a blatantly false way. He completely and purposefully misrepresents the Tribal Gaming industry. Both Grisham and CBS should be ashamed.
John Grisham may be a master storyteller when it comes to fiction but his ability to fully research and understand the Tribal Gaming Industry is on the level of junior high school student writing his first book report. I am extremely disappointed and offended at the statements he made on "CBS This Morning". I have worked with Native American Tribes for over 26 years in leading and managing gaming operations which are highly regulated at more levels (Tribal, State, Federal) than the commercial casino industry in this country. All the revenues are accounted for every single day with multiple audits being done through out the year. The Tribes do not pay taxes on their gaming operations just as the states who have lotteries do not pay taxes. This is because both are a form of 'governmental gaming' that benefits their citizens to support education, elder care, housing, water / sewer, etc. If Mr. Grisham would have spoken to the National Indian Gaming Association and people who work in the industry then maybe his 'research' would have some merit.
Conrad Granito natives pay taxes every year
For the Indian casino or Vegas defenders, all I have to say is, I don't know much about anything but me, personally when I go to casino after casino and end up getting my money back, mightbe 2% of the time, it tells me that there is something, I'm I that unlucky? Bottom line...They are bad!! But like I said at the beginning, I don't know much, but I think they should be banned every where, including vegas, or just call them for what they really are...Rat nests... Put a disclaimer at the entrance, chances of winning are. 1% 2% 25% whatever...that would make me think....
Loved this book. Just finished reading it.
I just started reading it. I'm on chapter 3. Does it get good?
This is a shame! I absolutely loved reading Grishams novels. I certainly won't read this one, or any other. Artistic license is one thing, absolute misrepresentation is another. He should publicly apologize and donate the proceeds of the book to scholarships for Natives studying law. Very disappointed.
It's fiction for a reason
For the record I have no problem with him using artistic license to craft a story, all writers do. He is misrepresenting Native American people during the INTERVIEW. That is what is unacceptable, unless you mean to suggest the interview was a work of fiction.
Nicolas Reynolds sorry I hadn't watched the interview yet
