    From what I understand, Myth and Storm are "opposites" in that they are respectively themed around Tradition and Mysticism vs Progress and Science respectively, but neither school sticks rigidly to those themes.
    Also you just have to look at Lore Spells to see that KingsIsle doesn't really stick to a School's theming very reliably.

    I really love this interpretation of the wysterian schools. There was a line from this newest update that I feel is kinda relevant here. I can't remember the NPC's name nor the exact line, but it was the guy that introduces the magic wheel to us, after the tutorial he says to go back to ravenwood as he would hate to interrupt "our more traditional studies". So I can definitely see the wysterian schools as being a vaild, if a little unpopular, magics.
    On the topic of the Myth/Storm being opposites, I kinda had 2 thoughts why. One being that Storms can wipe away a populations, taking away their stories. On the other had, New stories can be made about why that storm happened and what those populations were like. The other reason was that myth and storm are like the arts and science. In my bubble of the world, the arts and Science has always been in direct competition, Even though i think they both need some creativity. Myth is being Creative through storytelling, while storm is being creative with machines that run on electricity.
    I also find it kinda funny that a Life weaving into Death gets the title of soul weaver. Doubt that's relevant but still funny.
    I really hope I'm coherent lol

    • @AstralGarden101
      @AstralGarden101  Місяць тому +25

      Thanks for the feedback! I think you're kinda right about the Myth vs Storm thing, I think the official reasoning is that Storm uses logic (science) and Myth uses imagination (arts), but it doesn't hold up, because obviously the inventor's school uses imagination as well. It always felt to me like they just had those two schools "left over" and had to come up with an explanation after the fact for why they're opposites, hence why the reasoning feels a bit weak.

    • @guardianpanda1350
      @guardianpanda1350 Місяць тому +8

      I understood the relationship between Storm and Myth as forms of destruction. Storm and Myth are the highest damaging schools of their trios, and demonstrate a solid, real form of destruction, versus a more imaginative, mythical form of destruction.

    I love this interpretation of Pigswick and it's teachings. I think it's a lot more fun and interesting for them to not just be completely wrong and for magic to just be more nuanced than the brilliant minds at either academies to really get it 100% right. I never liked the idea of Pigswik just being a knock off Ravenwood. It's much more interesting to look at the institution in ways like this. That whole magic fountain thing they got going on is still weird probably bs tho lol.

    • @AstralGarden101
      @AstralGarden101  Місяць тому +20

      100%, The magic fountain is definitely BS, the game really drills that in, and it's valid. Then again, in terms of everything else, I think the world serves as a perfect opportunity for KingsIsle to expand their universe in a way that is strictly worldbuilding instead of having some crazy conflict going on everywhere. They could explain the universe, and how normal people live normal lives in the Spiral, which is something I think we desperately need to see more of.

    • @AstralGarden101
      @AstralGarden101  Місяць тому +8

      I know I just said that yesterday, but after some thinking, we have actually heard of "Fountains of Life" that are all over the Spiral. It seems like they actually predate the Spiral itself, and nobody understands them, "not even Wizards"
      This makes me wonder if there's a possibility that the reason the narrator says the fountain at Pigswick looks like nothing to you is because you literally just don't understand it, so it looks like just some fountain to you.

  • @leondyer3855
    @leondyer3855 Місяць тому +21

    Honestly this does seem interesting as an outsider looking in, I think it might just be that as you said pigswick is just taking a different viewpoint on the same fundamental magical force. For example wildfire can be a destructive force that can cause a lot of collateral damage, it can also be used to craft things from ironworking to baking. Ice can come in the form of a nigh-immovable glacier, it can also come in the form of light frost on your windowsill that melts away with the slightest touch. For both the heat and the cold, they are fundamentally the same it's just that ravenwood and pigswick focus on different aspects in their philosophy.
    Hypothetically, somewhere either between the pigswick and Raven wood philosophies one could potentially suss out a universal theory of magic for the universe.

  • @DuncanWilliamsOFFICIAL
    @DuncanWilliamsOFFICIAL Місяць тому +26

    Technically shadow magic is the opposite of balance (if you fight a shadow creature in W101, they boost to balance) but that's not really here nor there. By the Roshambo and lore of The Spiral, Balance doesn't really have an opposite school. Also Wysteria is missed potential, why did KI go through the trouble for this entire world, just for it to be a "nothing world" or filler? It would be super cool and exciting to see what those schools offered to learn in comparison to Ravenwood.

    This is a good theory. Especially tempest, they could have easily gone with a "calm water" to be the opposite of storm but they decided to make it more than that. So i think in some way, it was intentional. That, and I also think that the school of pigswick academy is a critique on astrology and while to some degree its making fun of overly philosophical thinking without any practice, it is also challenging widely held beliefs in this universe. like saying well not everyone born with a certain blood type is predictable in a certain way. things like that. Perhaps both wigswick and ravenwood are both wrong in assuming a certain magic type produces a certain type of person.

    Heironimus feels like a diet Shadow scholar who hasn’t found his niche yet, he needs to have a talk with Sofia DarkSide, Elana DarkSun and Velma Von Venkman for some guidance imo.
    Because trying to be Chaos with a total lack of physical application in creation is not what Greek Chaos would do, or the fact that at the time of Wysteria arc; Spider’s Chaos heart is the exact thing that gives the Spiral Order to stay afloat.
    If they ever made a Wysteria come-back I wonder how much that school would be impacted after Arc 3 when Shadow magic was spilling out like crazy
    I think the main contrast btwn Myth and Chaos lies in the fact that Myth gets its power from the old stories, per Emperor of Mooshu in Solar Arc, and Chaos is trying to create something new but it feels incomplete without the primordial fact of Shadow’s Chaos in it, and that to make it so you must have theory be put into action!

    I've never played this game but your lore video is really neat and I can imagine that, in a real world, there *would* in fact be a school that focuses on different philosophies and aspects of magic. If the player's school is the one that teaches spellcasting and battle magic, then the parody-named school would be an academic centre of magical research that propels magical understanding forwards. Especially since the wealthy students will be in a financial position to perform personal research, and support large scale projects done through their old school, after graduation.

    Balance and Equilibriums differences, they literally do equal or balance out each other. Balance has a focus on the chaotic nature of combining the elements and spirits, whilst Equilibrium tips the scales back with complete order separate from everything else. Quite fitting. However, with Balance originating from Krokotopia, specifically the Order of The Fang creating it, it is told how they wove all of the other practices into each other to create balance magic, in order to combat the Tuts. Here's something that might break the idea of Equilibrium being an at all appropriate way of studying Balance magic, it's hilariously from Age of Ultron, "They think order and chaos are opposites." We view things as chaotic when they don't go how we expect them to, but that's how it did, the law of nature deemed it so, and that is in essence balance.
    Why yes, I am a Balance Wiz, how could you tell?

    ravenwood teaches you how to use the tank, pigswick teaches you the how and why that tank operates.
    honestly it is one of the best aspects of the lore, as if the two schools (or really anyone else) worked together they could make magic that is vastly better than anything currently around, with pigswick graduates telling the how, while the ravenwood and others do the actual magic
    that most of the teachers in pigswick are from species that aren't great at their own magic but ARE great at understanding it as it flows in them is a massive advantage to teaching others to not see magic as some mystic force but something you can truly understand with study

      @AstralGarden101  17 днів тому

      @@camerongiles6650 Does it say that? Storm is the inventor's school, it certainly seems more creative than destructive. I saw one of the original game writers say that they had to make them opposites after they were created, so their best explanation is that storm vs myth is logic vs imagination. I would just argue you need imagination to be an inventor as well.

    @tratanlightbreaker6029 Місяць тому +6

    The one point i kidna have to disagre is that myth being the opposite of storm, does actually make sense.
    Firstly, calling a myth the school of imagination is rather weird. While I know that's what it's called in it's describtion, it is followed by "Beware, though, for when imagination becomes too fanciful and whimsical, dreams can escape control and run wild." It's a very strict school which as you implied makes myth wizards the most studious and disciplined. Even their own methods are based on remembering the true names of something in order to summon it. I would say that myth rather than the school of imagination is the school of knowledge.
    Storm on the other hand is about creativity, but specifically a spontanious creativity, as it's description says "It represents that flash of insight, or the spark of inspiration that makes you yell, Eureka!" and "Wizards that embrace the School of Storm, known as Diviners, are driven by the thrill of investigation and discovery." They are spontaneous and unlike myth, not afraid to dream big, and gamble on what may come - literary being the school who's spells are the most likely to fail, both with having the lowest accuracy and the only school with gamble based effects.
    Myth and Storm are the opposite on the basis that one seeks the knowledge through scroutinous research of the past where the other through looking into the possibilities of the future.

    • @AstralGarden101
      @AstralGarden101  Місяць тому +3

      I can see that- Myth is the past and Storm is the future. I still don't think it's perfect, it feels reductive in a lot of ways, but it's the best I've heard so far, and probably the best we'll get since they don't have an innate and obvious opposition like the others do.

    • @tratanlightbreaker6029
      @tratanlightbreaker6029 Місяць тому

      @@AstralGarden101 I may be biased, since I do kinda look at the Wizard101 magic schools through the ideas given to me from MtG color wheel study, but I honestly have to disagree. To me it feels more reductive to need such innate and obvious opposition because it reduces the schools to simple A vs B, while ignoring the philosophy behind each of them.
      The first thing we do after arriving in Ravenwood (lorewise) is consulting a book of secret, which gives us a personality quiz based on which we are assigned towards one of the schools. This tells us that ones personality is important when choosing a field of magic they were to study, and that magic schools are based, not on their elements themselfself, but at the ideas behind them.
      Fire and Ice are not opposing schools because fire melts ice and cold extinguishes fire, but because the philosophies behind both of them are the polar opposites - fire represents passion, enthusiasm and anger, while ice represents patience, rigidity and temprance. The duality of them comes from one being a school of action, while the other from the school of passiveness, which is also reflected in their playstyles.
      The same concepts can be appied to myth and storm. Myth is a school of dyscipline, while storm is the school of spontaneousness. Myth focuses on knowledge already learned, while storm on knowledge yet to be learned. Myth wizards prefer to be in control, while storm wizards are reckless and prone to risk.

    • @tratanlightbreaker6029
      @tratanlightbreaker6029 Місяць тому

      @@AstralGarden101That's straight up not true. The roshambo wheel doesn't even uses the concept of the opposite schools pairings, so them saying that would make no sense. They did say "Fire melts ice", but they did not said "that's why they're opposites". It's an entirely different system which is irrelevant if we talking whether storm and myth are opposites.

    My impression of Myth and Storm is that Myth is more like on the mental/conceptual side and Storm is on the physical. Myth is more about aesthetic form. Storm is more about practical function. Myth is more about stories and art. Storm is more about devices and inventions. This makes them more like the duality of Pigswick's Spirit and Earth, rather than the dyad of Chaos and Equilibrium.(Or Tempestus, which could still somewhat be seen as a counter to Chaos)
    It seems in practical application, Ravenwood's schools are more successful, which probably means its theories are more accurate. (Additional evidence could be seen in the enemy school weaknesses/resistances, but how canon such game-play aspects are can be questionable, especially since Pirate101 exists.)
    However, even if Ravenwood's theories are more accurate, that does not mean they are complete. The school philosophies may be applied more broadly than the fields associated with them, if Myth/Storm and Spirit/Earth really are counterparts.(Assuming there is any truth to the Pigswick theories.) If this is the case, then would the philosophy be the school or would the associated field be the school?

    I never thought about Myth and storm and "why" they are opposites but now I'm really curious about the exact reason. and funny thing about that is when I first heard the question I thought "well I know why I do" but then I typed it out realized my reasoning is... a little strange. I thought of Myth as "asleep"/"fake" while Storm was "awake"/"real". storm wakes up and reveals myth's being fake, and myth somehow concealed storm's reality and put it back to sleep.
    rereading it I feel like it makes sense but at the same time it feels weird, thanks for asking that question! it's really interesting to think on something I'd never even considered strange about the game.

    If what you say is true (Great video btw & I 100% agree) then the one thing that doesn’t make sense to me is; If Pigswick Academy teaches & studies more of the philosophical & theological aspects of magic & none of their students graduate with some combat experience, why did Pigswick start & host the magic tournament for the Spiral Cup? Why does this tournament only have magical combat instead of academic competitions? And why has Ravenwood lost to them multiple times before finally deciding to drop out? It’s been a while since I’ve played that world so if anyone wants to correct me please do. But maybe it was just retcon? Not thoroughly thought out? I really do hope we see more of this world tbh

    • @AstralGarden101
      @AstralGarden101  Місяць тому +3

      Ravenwood never lost to Pigswick. The whole thing is they started the Spiral Cup, but they lose to other schools every time. Eventually, everyone else got tired of beating them and stopped competing, meaning that Pigswick won by default a few times. I think if Pigswick stopped trying to judge their own worth by external metrics, and just fully embraced and focused on their uniqueness, it could be something really great. Same thing with the fountain. They thought they needed to show off some great magical artifact that only exists at the school, but they really didn't. They just need to carve their own name into history instead of trying to compare to other schools, when they're clearly not the same.

    Wysteria aren't wrong necessarily especially on the Arc where we meet Chaos incarnate with the Kabaal trying to control it! These schools specifically tend to represent what Chaos did! AS we know the primary schools where founded by the primordial energy of the titans for elemental magic and raven and spider where the reason for spiritualism! Hence why it can also be said for Chaos to enact as a study that Pygswic Acadamies would study !

  • @moonshadow6046
    @moonshadow6046 Місяць тому

    my thought is that each of the wystarian schools teach combination of 3 Ravenwood schools. the school of chaos teaches fire, myth, and storm spells, wile order teaches death, life, and frost spells these spells being spells to like storms, creations, and fire. fore the chaos and uncontrollability of the spells. wile order teaches spells like healing, traps, and control undead spells.
    when you think of it that way it makes since why most Wystarian'n wizards are not as power full it's because they are more rounded are are the Hogworts of wizard 101 wile Ravenwood is the Durmstrang teaching specific spells and wanting you to be power full in your school.
