About James:
Mixing together Tennessee twang, southern storytelling, and a big, booming baritone, James Carothers makes throwback country music for modern times.
It's an old-school sound that ignores the trends of contemporary radio. You won't find any bro-country songs here. No AutoTuned vocals, either. Instead, Carothers dishes up a reminder of country music's golden years - a time filled with fiddle solos, analog production, and slyly simple songs about heartaches and hangovers. His first full-length album, Relapse, available now, offers plenty of all three.
If Relapse bears similarities to classic releases by George Jones, Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard, it's because Carothers wrote most of the songs between daily gigs at The George Jones in Nashville. Since its opening in 2015, he's performed hundreds of shows at the venue, playing acoustic duo sets throughout the week with loyal sideman Jerry Lee Combs on bass and a weekly Saturday night band show on The George Jones Rooftop. George Jones' own widow, Nancy, personally hired Carothers for the gig, giving him the opportunity to do something he's thankful for and that so many aspiring artists moving to Nashville only dream of doing - make a living playing music...

The most “country “ I have heard in the last twenty years. Thank you sir. Hank is smiling!!!
Hilarious
I know hank William's Sr and Jr would be proud of this sir good job
Don't fuck it up, you gotta badassstyle! this is what the new country music needs
That's damned COUNTRY. When you hear it, you know it. & your toe'll get to tappin all by itself. And this boy fuckin' nailed it. Like Juan said... "Don't fuck this up", we're countin on folks like you!
Juan Rodríguez this guy is badass
He captures the sound that we hardly ever get to hear these days. Why is he not coming out with more? I've heard everything I can find from this guy and love all of it. He could have it all if he wanted.
If only Hank could see music now, there is such a need for real singers again, this guy could be the start of something.
“Theres rappers wearing cowboy hats, it didn’t use to be that way”
He predicted Old Town Road by Lil Nas X
Great song from James Carothers!
There was Mikel Knight, Colt Ford, and a few others!
tony gonzales hey there bubba. That was uncalled for. Imma ask you to apologize to James. He ain’t don’t nothin wrong. Only word that he like different kinds of music. Now I’m personally like James. I like Colt Ford, Upchurch, Adam Calhoun, Johnny Cash, Hank Sr & Jr, Skynyrd, etc. But just cause you may not agree with his taste 100% don’t mean you can be using hateful words. Just try to be nice from now on. Have a good day.
darryl runnels now sir that’s racist and not true at all. I have plenty of brothers that we go out in the sticks and kick back to all that music I listed. My brothers range from black, white, Hispanic, native, hell even an Asian. So imma ask you to stop with the racism. You give us good country folk a bad rap with your foul mouth. And I ain’t changin any tradition. It’s creating a new one. That younger folks can attest to.
Cowboy Troy was the first to my knowledge
Great song!!! Thank You for bringing back REAL TRUE COUNTRY MUSIC!!
I was playing last week at a local fair I was taking requests from the crowd so I was ask to do a Luke Bryan song I looked at the boys and we did a Hank song

Hummm....naaah
Agreed!
Hell yeah! Real Country! Thank ya James for staying true to country music's roots!
💜💜this one!
"It doesn't sound like country, it don't look like Tennessee"
Best musician since Cash and Waylon!
James Carothers , Nashville legend and singer of everything country!😊😊😊😊😊
I gave up on our country stations a few years back. My dad listened to Willie, Waylon, Merle, Coe, and a whole lot of Garth. I remember in Elementary school we had to write down our favorite singer and song. I put Gath Brooks - The Thunder Rolls. Almost Everyone else put down Montell Jordan "This is how we do it." So being the odd man out, I tried to fit in. I regret trying to fit in. At about 20 years old I said "To hell with it, I don't need to be popular." I picked up on a lot of 70's and 80's rock. Then some harder stuff that was newer. Then at about 35...I became a step-father, and I couldn't care what people's opinions are anymore. I will listen to whatever I want, and it damn sure won't be the pop country BS on the radio. Outlaw country and hard rock, and maybe some oldies here and there. I'm still only 37, but some of that garbage on the radio now...NOPE. James Carothers and numerous others(in the same genre) are what I listen to.
gotta love that old style of country, i grew up with this and wish it would come back. sick of this pop country.
stephen fleming check out "Sand Mountain Blues" by Luke Bell--I was turned onto it recently and he sounds a lot like Merle Haggard. He has a classic sound.
Check out Whitey Morgan and Alex Williams
Stephen Trusty good shout on whitey Morgan
The world needs more of this
dalton taylor exactly

Been a proud fan of James going on 3-1/2 yrs now . This was the song that hooked me.
Saw him in concert he is a stand up down to earth guy he talked to us afterwards said he didn’t care if you bought anything or not he just wanted to thank everyone for coming and just sit and talk he’s a good ole fashioned dude !
@@ronaldcoleman2569 yep Wife and I have been fortunate enough to catch James and band live 4 times over the yrs . Not only do they put on a great show , James and Jerry Lee and stand up guys to shoot the shit with .

Lyrics:
There's hip hop beats at the Opry, I never thought I'd see the day
There's rappers wearing cowboy hats, it didn't used to be that way
I reckon that's the way it's gone and it's somethin' I can't be
It doesn't sound like country, it don't look like Tennessee
Well, it's a long way back to Hank
It's a far cry to that old steel guitar twang
It's too far to turn around, I think
It's a long way back to Hank
Steel guitars and smoky bars is somethin' from yesterday
But there's still hillbillies cuttin' rugs and livin' the American way
This downtown Nashville music, well, that just ain't my jam
I miss them old twin fiddles and the sound from Alabam
Well, it's a long way back to Hank
It's a far cry from that old steel guitar twang
It's too far to turn around, I think
It's a long way back to Hank
It's a long way back to Hank
And it's a far cry to that old steel guitar twang
It's too far to turn around, I think
And it's a long way back to Hank
Yeah, it's a long way back to Hank
Awesome COUNTRY song. So glad it's not that rap country. We need more songs like this.
This is awesome! As a heavymetal-junkie from the darkest, coldest woods of Sweden, I feel a bit more country every time I hear this 😊
just found this guy. I'm stoked. God bless hank
Lovin this over in the ole country friend
He’s the man! Use to watch him before he made it
Great tune . Ole Hank is still the king of country music . Love Him ❤️❤️
squawcreekkid as hank 3 said, the grand ol opry ain't so grand anymore!
tomkava2000 yeah He was great . But Hank is my all time fave . It's a long way back to Jimmie Rodgers too . The Grandaddy of country music .

Now this real country music
Hey James, it's Austin. Keep rockin buddy! Had to come back again and jam along!👍✌️
So on my feed on FB for a group called We hate pop country, your video for this song came on. Pure AWESOME SAUCE just GOLD is what this song is. I like to say real country folk wear their boots out and I am not talking about going to dinner. I am going to have to buy a few cd's of your music now.
Thats where i heard this too, that fb page is badass
Same here. I started listening to Cody Jinks on Pandora after I saw his name on We hate pop country. Mr Carothers came on and I was hooked!
Y'all listen to frank foster. You wont be disappointed!!!
I totally follow your page :) Good to know I'm not the only one who hates pop country, it's just awful
No, Frank Foster is just another flavor of the week Nashville Pop
Best song I've heard since.. well since Hank. I appreciate y'all bringing back some real country.
Keep producing music like this! This is the country I miss.
Great song if todays county radio would just play it.
Lets go back to Hank and get as far away from luke as possible!
Eric Z I know right man
Amen 👈
I completely agree. But everyone uses luke bryan as an example but even though his shit has turned sour, at least he actually lives the life and writes about it. The real fake asses that need to go are Thomas Rhett, Sam Hunt, Keith Urban, Kelsea Ballernini, Kane Brown, and many more. Never heard some shit further from country music in my life
Eric Z ha you aint lying jack!!!
Luke got hit in the head with a beer bottle when he tried to rap lmao
This song is badass
Until we take our country back we'll never get back to Hank sad to say. But I'm ready
Love it 😍
I met James Carothers at the George Jones Museum about eight years ago he was so cool and so laid-back he was playing for tips him and his wife were in there and George Jones wife Nancy was in there too and my son and i were down touring from Wichita Kansas checking out the the hot spots he was actually cool enough to let me play his guitar and sing a song and it's just so amazing to see him come this far he should be much further I think he deserves it and he gave me a free CD signed it and he was just really nice guy good luck James keep soaring Like an Eagle buddy
Best James loveeeeee
great voice and real country love it
best damn song ive heard in the past several years.keep it real country mr carothers, wish there where more real country singers around these days like you.thank you for the great music sir.
I’m a metal head. But this is what I always thought what country was supposed to look and sounds like.
This guy has nailed it.
2020 and I just heard this for the first time!! This is what we need to hear on radio not the cookie cutter frat boy crap they call country.
I'm not sure why this isn't topping the charts right now
Probably because he doesn't fit the Nashville mold! Hope he keeps it real and stays out if Nashville!
I just found this guy, I like his style and this song is badass
Yes we need to get back like yesterday
Incredible
Pure country coming at ya!!!
Caught you in Savannah opening for Alan Jackson. First time, you guys are amazing. Keep going.
Good shit Bud!! Keep it Traditional Country!!
The original outlaw, long live the legend, Hank Williams Sr.
God bless old school country👍
Nice song

This just blew me away! I am so stunned I have no words. This is my kinda country. I am starting to warm up to some of the new sounds being brought into the country music mix. But, I admit, I do miss and beyond thrilled to have found James Carothers.
Hell yeah man
