Yes, the unsung surfers are really the heart of surfing. We see way too much of the WSA pro surfing. I prefer to hear about a guy like Larry that goes back to G-Land all those years. Great work putting this together 🏄♂️
Inspirational stuff. Most guys when they’re 20 don’t realise 75% of their mates won’t be surfing when they’re 40. A few make it to 65. This guy is the exception. Wow!
@B D Because of injury. (see my other post on this page) And your question, this question, is spot on. We all need to ask why, why can't I continue surfing.
This guy is responsible for me riding the best wave of my life in 2010 in G land. I was scared to go because it was my first day surfing there. Then he yelled goooooooo! so i decided to go on it, and that was it, an unforgettable backside tube in a 10 foot wave, followed by a very long ride. If he happens to read this comment I just want to say thank you. 🙌🏾🌟💥
First met Larry in the jungle in 08, I was 12 years old. He was an Inspiration to me back then. Present day I see him in the same place every year surfing some of the best waves I've ever surfed, and usually he'll get one of the best waves of the day and ride it to perfection. I always appreciate his advice, very intelligent dude.
Great advice Larry👍👍👍 I’m hoping to still be at it when I’m 72. I think the paddle fitness routine is right on the money. That’s what I’m noticing is challenging now at 62. Onya Larry 🙏
Congratulations to you Larry, and thanks to RawFiles for bringing this great surfer to us all. Fantastic footage of a classic surfer getting the greatest of pleasure from every wave. Do what you love, and love what you do and you may just live forever.
Thanks man, yeah I feel like actually some yoga and stretching might help to stay more fit ,but seems like Larry doesn't need any of it, he is just doing it his way and it works!
This is so refreshing. I'm turning 60 in a few days and I just started surfing a couple of years ago. I'm in a place where I can live anywhere now as long as there is serviceable internet. See you on the waves Larry!
Hi Jeff! Thanks for watching! Thats amazing, that you just started surfing, they say it never late! I hope you will find a good wave to settle down next to and enjoy many more years surfing!
I Met Larry on one of my trips to G-land years ago . I still use his "Afew A grade waves on a grade C day" type of description to this day, aloha Larry.
9 weeks away from retirement @ 65; still surfing & wondering if it is too late; my Indo years were 76 - 79 & 2013 - 2019; Mate! Thanks for the inspiration! So f'n cool!
@@SurfRawFiles 58 years old and surfing strong. Short board and longboard. Probably will be working until I am 70. Constantly wondering if I can keep it up. Larry showed me I can 😃
Much respect Larry. I’m 59 and still riding short boards under 7’ at 103kg and a 7’2 seaside and beyond… staying fit is a big challenge. I should find a paddling routine like yours. Thanks for your humble inspiration 🙏🤙🏽
Wow i love this bro. Im early 60's and thank you for profiling an older. Surfer. Indo looks so rightious i want to be there soon. The s w ells are just slamming great e verywhere there. Thanks again SURFS UP🌊🌊🌊💥💥💥😎😎😎🏄🏄🏄🏄
Great stuff. He's so right about the paddling ability being the deciding factor, especially at G Land. I'd love to know the dimensions of the board he rides out there.
Thanks for watching Sushi! Just ask him via Facebook, his profile URL is in the description! I am sure he will help you,if I remember right he had a 7'6 or an 8 that day we filmed (yellow board).
Wow! So cool! I'm 63 and making a trip to Maui this month. Have been on a board in about 15 years. Very nervous about my return to the water. Feeling better about it now! Very inspiring!🤙
Aloha Larry! I'm 61, surfing as often as I can (although I passed on 10 foot plus Rolling Stones, Mahia last weekend!) here in NZ. Part of the surfing world, but not the SIC. You're an inspiration - 5 mile paddles --- I will start tomorrow ;)
OH SURF DOG......BLESSING TO YOU .......I AM 73 AND CANNOT SURF IN THE FREEZEING CALIF WATER AND POOR SURF.......SEE YOU SOON BRO..A GREAT WAVE IS EASY TO SURF...BLESSS US ALL.
Dr Gigi , shared some epic days at Launching pad with him it was torture seeing him in uncrowded covid lockdown camp almost all of season '21 good on ya Laza.
Love this video. That is inspiring. My main comment is this, he says the hardest part is (the thing that limits you, the limiting factor) is paddling back out. I fully agree. Too much paddling is how I tore a muscle in my back. So now in my 40s I am forced to quit surfing. So it's not about AGE, it is about INJURY. That is the key issue. So, he says he paddles for 4-5 miles, to strengthen himself. But too much paddling is what injured my back muscle. So be careful!!! I think that is my msg here. Don't over-do it.
@@SurfRawFiles thank you guys. One guy told me to hit the swimming pool, for my rehabilitation. I am not doing that. Currently i am doing weight lifting to strengthen my back. Feeling better! It's working. (also daily jogging about 1/2 mile only)
At 62 disk compression has made it impossible to surf but last year spent time in New Zealand surfing and the year before South Africa and JBay. The Mentewais in the 90's was pretty special. Surf as long as you can.
Very cool vid ! I love his honesty saying; "I don't rip, I swoop" ! LoL . . . mate, if your still surfing g-land at 72 - ya doin it right ! - . . . Like you, I surfed it in '87 also (August), but only for 1 week. It was good/great, but there's just as good if not better elsewhere ! & I haven't been back to G-Land even tho I went back to Java in '03... ( In '87 I left AUS to explore the world for 6 months at 23yrs old, but that soon became an 18 month circle of the globe once I learned to live cheaply, LoL . ... . . There's some damn fine waves around/on this planet ! . . . Go fuckin' get 'em guys !! ... I did.
How luck are you. I surfed from age 10 to my early 50s then the arthritis set in. Had both hips replaced at age 57 and tried to get back to it but had lost all my upper body strength. I’m still grieving the loss.
This guys RIPS on a snowboard. He rides tree lines in deep powder far better then most ! …..and can lay down a hard boot carving session better then most 30 year olds. Although his cooking is crap…… ok, its acceptable !
I met this guy in 1987 at G-Land. I spent two week in June and two weeks in July there in 1987. Bobby had a deal back then if you bought 3 weeks he gave you a 4th week free. I think the cost for those 4 weeks was only $300, I forget, I know it was not more than $400. I went to Indo five seasons in all but never went back to G-Land after that trip. I found Hu'u before that and kept going back there. Lakey Peak with no one out back then pretty much. The locals did not surf back then, and Hu'u was relatively unknown and uncrowded compared to what I experienced at G-Land that season.

His lack of ego and strut is so refreshing. No chest puffing bro-bra-ism, just a long and thoughtful love affair with Mother Ocean.
