Unrelenting chest pain despite normal heart tests

- Chest pain is a scary symptom and a very uncomfortable symptom. The obvious concern is that it may reflect an underlying problem with the heart. However sometimes all the heart tests come back normal and the patient continues to suffer. I this video, i discuss other causes of chest pain and how to go about being investigated for them. I went to the ER 14 times over several months with chest pain radiating into my neck and jaw. Every time, my EKG and cardiac enzymes were perfectly normal. The ER doctors would tell me it wasn't my heart and send me home. I felt like I was going to die. FINALLY, a cardiology doctor came to evaluate me and said he did not feel comfortable sending me home. He admitted me to the hospital and ordered an angiogram. I had a 95% blockage of my LAD and two 80% blockages in my right coronary artery. I received three stents and was put on a blood thinner and multiple blood pressure medications. Thank goodness for doctors who pay attention to their instincts.
David Clay I was in similar situation. My LAD on angiogram was 50% and they did not consider it significant. They said they would stent it at 60% which is what the CT scan showed. All tests otherwise were fine. Very fortunate your cardiologist was called in to check it out!

I had the same thing. EKG was fine blood test showed a very small rise so they did a stress tests that showed nothing so they did an angiogram and found I had a 100% blocked chronic total
occlusion with bridging collaterals at the top of my RCA and 2/3 down was blocked 95%. They didn’t do anything and sent me home. Went to another doctor and they stented both open.

Me too just learn to live with the tightness of chest and dizziness I also have high blood pressure but every dr tells you your fine after a stress test or ekg or tell ya you need to see a psychiatrist or gives you more blood pressure meds or Xanax

Your patients are fortunate that you care about finding the cause. In the U.S. if cardiologists cant find a heart related resolution will write the patient off as crazy and give them xanax
Same in the UK, if they cant find an obvious cause then its depression/ anxiety, and you're told to clear off. I think the people of York are fortunate to have this man.

This is an awesome video. Although the cause of my pain has been found, I do believe a chest pain clinic would benefit us here in the states. It took 6 years for my diagnosis but I had been living with my issue my entire life. Doctors will ignore you because you don't fit in the boxes. Wrong age, gender, etc and I could have died while they were playing around.

This video was very helpful and comforting. It’s great to hear it from an actual doctor as apposed to google where everything is a heart attack. My doctor tells me my chest pain is most likely exercise related. I think you have put my mind to ease about the whole situation.

If the pstient at the beginning was a woman, she would have been told it’s just anxiety and sent home. Women are much more likely to have issues with the small vessels.

TheAmtwhite just a thought but putting physical objects in anyones bodies cannot be good long term. Better surely to try to see if other non invasive techniques would give better long term survival? There is a lot of this type of pain with COVID-19. Many drugs and even things we eat and drink get into our blood. Would any of these be a better long term remedies?
I'm a male and they did this with me. I have no angina but I have pvc and pac. I also have sharp pains every now and then they blame it on anxiety

I'm from Lancashire. I had chest pain, rather sharp in left side. It occurred randomly. As two members of my family died due to heart attack and one is suffering from the heart condition, I was checked out immediately.
However, they could not find anything, which was pleasing.
Prior to that, I had to go for breast cancer clinic as they felt that my mammogram from previous time, three years ago, was slightly different from the present. The procedure required inserting a long needle to my right breast in order to investigate the cause. This left my breast tissue tender.
After a couple of months, I stated Gym, doing my usual cardio and gental weight exercises. Within few weeks i started getting a sharp pain in my left chest as I mentioned before.
I was certain that my pain was due to the insertion of the needle that may have left my breast muscles prone to damage on stretching.
This video appears to confirm my reasoning. Thank you Dr Gupta.

Thank you very much for this info , I was having sharp/stabbing pain near my sternum , easily localized , my anxiety instantly jumped to heart attack , not having any knowledge of when to recognize when it I cardiac or not , now I know, it is not my heart , simply the sac where the heart sits , or stomach issues !

Excellent, excellent video. Thank you. As i read through the comments, something quite surprising popped out.... the large number of people who are experiencing undiagnosed or untreated or ineffectively treated chest pain. This is very interesting. On the one hand, it's very good to hear these personal stories as it helps everyone realize how common such medical conditions exist. On the other hand, it begs the question, "How many undiagnosed or ineffectively treated medical conditions exist?" It's very concerning, and a very complex discussion. I feel bad for the top doctors such as Dr. York who are helping so many, but understand the limited amount of assistance available relative the scope and quantity of medical conditions in the general public. I am also having undiagnosed chest pains but only when doing aerobic exercise and only intermittently. Therefore, I do not consider my condition serious but will seek medical advice at some point. Good luck to all, and thanks to everyone for sharing your story so we can all learn.
i am 35 years old with constant chest Pain/Upper right quadrant pain and doctors dont know what the pain is from. I have done Hietal hernia test, CT scans, Ultra sound, xrays, blood work, urine test but no answers. Gave me ulcer meds that did nothing. Pain is mostly at left chest and I dont know what to do now? SO FRUSTRATING
@@That_Cyber_Dude If I had your condition, the first question I would require the docs to answer is, "Can you tell me with full confidence that the pain I am experiencing is NOT something that indicates a very serious medical condition that requires immediate attention?" The docs (if they are properly qualified) absolutely must be capable of answering that question. If the answer is, "no", or, "we cannot be certain", then I would start working up the food chain. Demand a reference, i.e., specialist who has a thorough background in your particular issue. The point is this.... plain and simple, there is a near-certainty that SOMEONE can diagnose your condition. The bad news is that you may have to fight until you get the answers you need. Happens often in the medical field. good luck.

I get v bad pain in left side. I have to take pain tblts.or rub. Voltage. to ESE pain..think u doc please rely to now more.if I do have..I had a v stressed full life..

Amazing video very helpful information that was the problem I had after the heart attack and the stent I was still getting chest pain mostly at rest I was out and in to hospital with pain after watching your other video I mentioned to my cardiologist it was spasms I was getting he stopped the beta blocker and put me on calcium channel blockers thanks for sharing.

I wish all doctors where like you. I was in A and E with really bad chest pains. Once they did ECG and blood test and it came negative, they told me to go home without even a pain relief. That dismissal is the worse thing you could do to a patient. I am really glad I listened to this. Will book an appointment with my GP and if they to ignore my pain, send them this video. It does affect one's quality of life. Thank you

Hello did you have a problem with your stress test, but a normal echo and ct? What made them look further?
@@kasiaday212 I had a VT episode...213 beats min, They recorded it on a holter monitor. So I had a angiogram which shown all was ok with regards blockages and structurally. Also echo gram was ok. I have constant palpitations daily. But they are part of my daily life now.
What your symptoms
Its the same thing that i am suffering from and i also did a coronary angiogram and it came out negative!

Used to be an oncology nurse. Night before surgery, patients often got chest pain, and standing orders were to give them an antacid to see if there was relief, and there usually was. I had my own episode with pain and paralysis loan my left arm, but I can been doing a carving, lost track of time, and did a 7 hour stint. It was a combination of wearing a leather apron tied around my neck, hunched over the carving, thus irritating my torn rotor cuff and nerve impingement, which physio aided.

Thanks for this video. My girlfriend recently had a similar experience, though the pain was not so serious. We went to emergency and had a lot of testing done: EKG, xray, blood test for clots, BP was fine. The doctor said it could be that something was developing like a cold or flu, but not to worry.
As you have said, one has to consider everything in a person's lifestyle, and in her case, she is not obese, consumes a very clean diet, no smoking etc. As a teach however, she is under some stress.

Pains and Palpitations. Same process. Then 2 weeks of halter monitor. HUNDREDS of irregular heart beats, extra beats, skipped beats and was told it was normal. The pain isnt terrible, but it's uncomfortable. I had previously had excruciating chest pains years ago and found out it was a peanut sensitivity. Esophogeal Spasms, I guess.

I have a 'Peptic Stricture' that sometimes brings on what I think is called: 'Nutcracker Esophagus'. It's excruciating. The first time I had it-it was mistaken by others in the restaurant as a heart attack. The pain goes all across the chest. Its a really knotting, twisting, torque of a pain.

I have had chest pain for more than a year and a half. It began in a small area at the Centre of my chest, compared to now, it radiates as far as the left and right sides of my chest. have done a few heart tests such as EKG stress test and will be going for ultrasound at the end of this month. All of the tests have come back normal and now, I have been having dizzy spells with the sweats but I try to get on with things. When I lie down in bed to sleep or rest, I get these sharp pains on the left side more, and the right, sometimes have to take pain killers. In all this, additionally, I have an overall feeling of malaise everyday. I have also checked for Acid Reflux Disease and will be doing an ultrasound of the Pancreas, the Gallbladder and the stomach. Thank you for the information in this video, it has helped.

@@kryscarson5560 yes A little more than a two and a half years later, still have chest pains and for about three or four months I have been having intermittent pain right on the middle right clavicle, so far only at night.
I have had ultrasounds of the gallbladder which was fine but they found five stones in my bladder. Have taken meds which have dissolved most of them.
Sorry to sound like I’m wining but every morning now I get extreme anemic symptoms of which I thought was low blood sugar🤔
I plan to visit doctor very soon to find out more about the clavicle pain, there is a swollen area on my upper back.

A thousand thanks Dr. Gupta! I’ve been having this symptom for over 10 years. And hospitalized 4 times only to have tens tests done. Then be told that my heart is 100% five. Only to return home and have the same symptoms.
I’ve recently start Magnesium 575mg in the mornings. This seems to be doing the trick. The symptoms aren’t a frequent or severe.

I have coronary artery spasm / micro vascular angina diagnosed by Prof Kaski in London following two confirmed heart attacks . My heart attacks were recorded whilst undergoing angiogram, elevated troponin and ecg. It took years to be taken seriously by my cardiologist in my local hospital as my ecg can be normal during my heart attacks. ECG change was noted when I was in the ambulance but it’s intermittent so the chances of it being noted is low. My cardiologist said to me if he hadn’t seen it on the ambulance ecg he would never had thought the chest pain was cardiac related. When I call an ambulance with terrible chest pain I can’t cope with I have to ask the paramedics to keep watching the ecg even if normal as it will show up then disappear then pop up again. I manage my unstable angina 95% of the time at home and only ask for help if I am desperate. What is dangerous is to be told oh don’t worry coronary artery spasm is painful but harmless. It’s NOT, it has caused two heart attacks aged 39yrs old and again at 45yrs old confirmed by Prof Kaski.
Truth! Thanks for pointing that out. Even some doctors don't think it could lead to a serious real cardiac event.

I have one...Signs of paraesophageal hernia include, gastroesophageal reflux (heart burn, bloating, burping) chest and/or abdominal pain, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting, For patients with a paraesophageal hernia who are experiencing symptoms (abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding and/or reflux), surgical treatment is typically recommended to prevent a strangulated hernia. Surgical intervention usually involves pushing the stomach or other protrusions back into place. The surgeon then narrows the gap in the diaphragm (hiatus) with sutures and mesh materials to prevent another hernia
Very good Dr Gupta I was thinking of options but you are so good you were addressing all my options well I want to know what about Pancreas people have been diagnosed with the Pancreatic cancer mostly late as they also get themselves checked for heart rather the pain is coming from the Pancreas.There are floods in York I can make out you are away from that.
