The senior official that Najam Sethi spoke with is mixing two things by saying that because they don't have auditing expertise, they can't calculate taxes correctly or assess taxes correctly. First of all auditing and accounting are two different things. Auditing means, reviewing documents and data and verification of information to see whether the taxes have been calculated correctly or not. In order to calculate taxes correctly, you need accountants. It is mind boggling if he is saying that FBR doesn't have accountants who can calculate taxes correctly. It is hard to believe, and if that is the case, that's a huge shortcoming. The other thing is that FBR can always ask for bank statements, if they don't have direct digital access to the accounts. It will give them the same information.

Sethi sb..thanks for your programme as always..just to mention that your analysis about PSX is quite wrong...Company shares do move on basis of speculation but on fundamentals as well eg your in-laws had Nestle shares at 15 rupee and now it is 7k, not due to speculation but the growth of the company...All stock markets have an element of speculation as well as booms and busts...PSX is not any different and investors who are there finding value and stay long term make a great living out of it...
