Can I FIX this SNES? Super Nintendo Troubleshooting

- Hello, A-Sven-gers! Thanks for watching this video on how to troubleshoot an SNES Super Nintendo. This Super Nintendo was not working but I did not know why, and I had not seen this black and white screen on an SNES before. I went through a process to determine what the issue may be and was able to find the solution prior to opening the console. In this case it seems as though a faulty AC adapter is to blame and will need to be replaced.

This worked thanks, never wouldve thought it was a power issue. So happy i didnt have to take it apart
You're welcome! I was skeptical too and surprised at the answer, yet here we are! Glad it was helpful for you too, thanks for watching 🎮
Thanks Svenny! for looking at this for me, If I would have had a spare adapter I would have tried that but hey at least you got some content out of it. I can't wait to get this back and game on it :P
Happy to have helped! 🙌 Happy gaming pal!
Good job with that! That is so interesting. I didn't think that would have been a power issue because you could see that it still seemed to power on fine. I didn't know that could be an issue but it's good to know as I just recently got a SNES. It works just fine though. Out of curiosity, have you got any game recommendations for SNES that you really like? I don't have much for it, I just have Super Mario World and Tetris Attack(my favorite game on SNES).
To be honest I was shocked too, especially since it indicated power on the LED and showed some output on the TV. Glad to have resolved it prior to opening it all up.
The three games shown in this video are some of my personal favourites for sure, some I played fondly with my friend as a kid. Mario Kart can be found easily (SNES Mini, Nintendo Switch Online SNES app, etc) if you don't grab it for the SNES. Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse is amazing, you acquire different costumed power ups like Mega Man, which makes sense as both games were made by Capcom.
If you want to see more on the awesome Rock N Roll Racing, I did a video review here 🤟:

@@SvennyMcG Thanks Svenny! I appreciate the recommendations! I'll check those games out for sure. I'll take a look at your review video too
You bet! I love Tetris too but I don't think I've played Tetris Attack, so I'll be looking to try that too given your recommendation 👍
@@SvennyMcG Nice! Tetris Attack is a bit of a learning curve at first but the game has tutorials to teach how to play it. Once you get a hang of it, it can be pretty fun. The Japanese version is also available on SNES switch online known as Panel de Pon
Oh nice, I'll take a look! I don't mind a challenge and Tetris is always great, looking forward to it 😊
I wonder how that faulty power supply would respond to being tested with a multimeter? I'm having some trouble with my SNES currently and after watching this vid, I was thinking maybe it's a bad power supply, but the power supply showed a stead 9V DC current when I tested it with the multimeter. Do you think a reading like that would be enough confirmation to rule out the power supply as my culprit?
Great vid!
Good question! I didn't check the output for a reading so I'm not sure if it was fluctuating at all.
What are you getting on TV for output so far?
It's pretty strange. All but two of my games either just show a black screen, or the opening credit screen will appear, but nothing happens after that.
The two games that DO work are Sim City and Bust-A-Move, but neither of them have sound...
Any ideas?
I've had an issue with my SNES where it plays the opening cut scenes of the game but when I try and start the game it either freezes or goes to a black screen but i have sound in the background. This happens both on RF and composite.
Sounds like an error reading the cartridge. I'd suggest cleaning the pins on the cartridge and the cartridge port of the SNES (system must be unplugged, of course!).
I have a SNES that works fine on RF cable, but using a N64 AV/Multiout cable no signal is shown. This AV/Multiout cable works fine on N64, but besides fitting into my SNES, outputs no signal, could be the cable not having the necessary pins for SNES? could be the SNES console?
Sounds like you tested your variables and confirm the cable works with N64 so it sounds like the SNES Multi Out port is the issue. I'd try unplugging the console and then using isopropyl alcohol or windex to clean the pins on the Multi Out port to see if that helps at all.
What about red lines/dots throughout the screen? artefact… video does address that. I just received a Super Nintendo /SNES today and it’s doing this, although I only have one game so far to test it, so I’m hoping it’s just the game (wishful thinking, while it’s not ideal, I would rather the game and not the console) either way I can send them back via ebay via buyer rights policy, but it’s still a hassle buying consoles that do stuff like this. It wasn’t mentioned at all in the listing so… I’ll update after I test out another game with it.
If the game produces artifacting and isn't playable I'd try cleaning the contacts on both the game as well as in the SNES game port.
If the game plays but you see issues on the display perhaps try a Q-Tip with rubbing alcohol or Windex and clean the cable contacts
Mine not give anything, i cleaned all(cartridge included), with alcohol only red power.
I've also had an N64 power supply go on me. before I had multiple
So I temporarily redneck the new power supply
I just got a 12 volt adapter and a 4-volt adapter and connected to the appropriate pins and it worked until I got a new one
Looked a bit sketchy and unsafe but hey I really wanted to play Mario Kart okay lol
In theory you could charge older cell phones (USB without fast charge) off of a video games console multi out because they have 5 volts to power the RF modulators
Haha that's wild that you were able to piggyback adapters to get it running!!
And I wasn't aware of the multi out power, that's amazing! Sure make for a neat video (if you could do it safely, of course!)
I was thinking capacitor or short issue with the console or maybe the amplification stuff for the composite video
Until I watch the whole video
So I'm guessing now it is a capacitor or filter issue with the adapter
New adapter that was an easy fix
I had a similar issue years ago I don't know if it was a voltage drop or voltage peak I didn't have the proper stuff like multimeters or no much when I was that little but
One adapter would make the console freeze
Like Super Mario World would start you see the Nintendo logo and then you see the screen and then it would just be like a sound and Frozen image
But the other adapter it would work
You're probably right my friend, there may be something failing within too. I'm returning it to the owner and he's aware he needs a new AC Adapter but if that eventually fails too I'll likely update here
I have a Super Nintendo board right now I was messing with but I give up and so do a lot of other youtubers with similar issues there's a couple of chips that are very hard to replace the board I have though was peed on by a cat I gave the whole thing a bath isopropyl alcohol
I got it from a cousin who got it from a roommate that had the cat that peed on it years ago
He gave it to me last year
The issue is one of the chips that is supposed to generate some of the sprites is damaged
Like in Yoshi's cookies you don't see any of the pieces come down
And there's lines in the picture
But It sounds good
Haha what a wacky story with an unfortunate outcome. I love that you have the board to tinker with (not tinkle!), always the best way to learn about these systems by getting hands on.
@@SvennyMcG and literally just a board I have to cross the power switch pins there's no controller ports anymore all I have is the game console port AV and RF out and power of course
He lost the pieces when he moved except the main board
I was hoping to try to fix it or use it as a testing board or buy more faulty systems to try to get it working but I've seen UA-cam videos of people saying when that happens you're better off just throwing them out there's no way to replace all the pieces that are damaged with the same issues I'm having
The lines on the screen is probably just capacitor or interference issues like I said it sounds good
But we're missing some of the color and Sprite information so there is physical damage to the main Sprite and video processing chips
That's crazy that sprites go missing! Even if it's unable to be fixed at least you can use it for tests, recycle parts etc. Always a use!
