F40's on the Trinity Railway Express

  • With their several of their own locomotives gone for repairs or to be rebuild, TRE has had a lack of power recently which would leave them unable to run a sufficient weekday schedule. To prevent having to cut trains they leased two F40PH locomotives from Larry's Truck and Electric (LTEX) in Ohio. Enjoy this video as I showcase both F40's in various locations along the TRE corridor.
    The locomotives leased are LTEX 310 and 330, both Ex-Amtrak F40's painted in the blue and white livery from service on the AMT in Montreal. In the past these locomotives have worked for Amtrak, Virginia Railway Express, AMT, as well as MBTA in Boston. TRE received them in January of 2019 but they didn't enter service until August that year. They're primarily used during the morning and afternoon rush hour but have occasionally made their way onto Saturday trains as well as extra trains supporting crowds from sporting events in Dallas.

    LTEX #330 was built in 1981 as Amtrak #365, then later Virginia Railway Express (VRE) V33, and eventually AMT Montreal #330 before being sold to LTEX after AMT bought new Bombardier ALP-45DP locomotives. LTEX #310 was built in 1985 as Amtrak #392, later became VRE V31 and later AMT #310, also sold to LTEX by AMT in favour of ALP-45DPs. Both are slated to be rebuilt by Progress Rail into non-revenue genset switchers for CT Rail.

      I rolled plenty on Chicago' Metra trains, I also rolled them outta Chicago on the City of New Orleans back in the day.

    I first saw them somewhere in August - September, and i was shocked tbh. They're a nice addition to the T.R.E. Fleet.

      Hey i saw them in Montreal in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and maybe 2013 since i rode the amt trains pulled by them and i miss em we even had when the multilevels came a scheduled train with 9 to 11 cars and 2 of the f-40s doubleheading it

    Very cool that TRE had some good old F40's on the run for a while. One of my favorite passenger locomotives. I need to get downtown and ride the TRE.

    The full story of these two units is a bit longer. They weren't actually Amtrak 310 and 330. They were actually 365 and 392. After being retired from Amtrak, they were sold to Virginia Railway Express. alongside a few others. They became V31 and V33. VRE eventually retired every Locomotive they had in favor of MP36s. After that, the leaser picked them up. They decided to simply take the numbers they had at the time, and add a 0 to the end, instead of revert them back to their original Amtrak numbers. This gave them the numbers 310 and 330. Then they went to AMT, where they received their present paint scheme, and eventually were discarded for ALP45DPs and Ex-GO Transit F59PHs, and sent back away into storage. They came out again eventually to be leased to MBTA, unchanged aside from the AMT Logos gone, then went back into storage, and 310 and 330 are now here with TRE.
    There's actually a rumor going about that TRE is planning to expand their fleet with two extra Locomotives, so that way, they won't need to do leasing again should so many units be out at a time again in the future. They could very possibly end up permanently purchasing 310 and 330.
    Now, you may ask, what happened to the REAL 310 and 330? Well, the real 310 is now a Metro North West-Of-Hudson F40PH-3C, numbered 4914. The real 330, though, was unfortunately scrapped.
    1:30 Also, I love the way Cab Car 1006's Number Boards light up. Wish they would put boards like that on more of them.

      Correct, I forgot about the VRE rail part though, I'll be sure to add that. I didn't know thats where they received their new number. I knew they weren't 330/310 with Amtrak too, in fact on my instagram I have a photoshopped image of them in their Amtrak schemes with proper numbering.

      youre right about it being a Metro North F40 but the real 310 became 4194 and then 4910

    Second time around, as TRE used leased Amtrak F40PH'S duri6 it's startup before Ex: GO Transit locomotives used with Bombardier's cars bought from GO Transit at beginning of TRE service. 🤠

      This is true! I've seen pictures of those mismatched trains so it has been neat to see a different era of unusual TRE trains.

    I remember how these 2 actually ran, on the morning rush schedule on the vaudreuil husdon line, a consist of 10 multilevels plus 310 and 330 doubleheaded it when they were in montreal.

    I commuted westbound to the drop off point near a mall where I worked for a Godiva Chocolate boutique. The main halfway station for The TRE was the DFW station! I'd buy a ticket that was good all day. If you had a Jury Duty summons, the TRE was accessible for FREE! You could access the Ft. Worth bus to ride to the Courthouse! I used to enjoy riding to Dallas! Your Train ticket gives you access to the DART, Dallas Area Rapid Transit Lines... light rail in and around certain areas in the Dallas county area! You could go up to Plano, Texas, too! The Dallas station ALSO has Amtrak station, too!

      They sat in the yard for quite some time before ever touching the mainline, its good to have them running. I'd imagine they'll be here through the end of the year.

    TRE 124 was repaired and now is back on the rails. TRE 120 was recently repaired but currently resigns in Montreal Canada.

    It appears 310 had its horn changed a couple times since it's been on TRE. It first had a black K5LA, then a K3LA, and now a silver K5LA (the one in the thumbnail)

      It has indeed had its horn changed, but just once. When it was delivered it had a K3LA, sometime in late October of last year (2019) they swapped it out for the K5LA that it currently has. The horn is white but 310 smokes so much that it gets covered in soot from the exhaust making it look black.

      570 and 569 are both out for rebuilds which will include being repainted. They'll match the fleet of F59PH's
