Learning how to stop on the ice is probably the most useful skill to develop. Once you've master the stop in one direction, its always a great idea to learn it in the other way around. There are tones of different reasons to why learning to stop in both directions is useful:
Hockey players need to learn all skills in both directions (left and right, weak side and strong side)
This still is also useful for general skaters and it makes you a better and more confident and proficient skater. - Навчання та стиль
11yrs later, and this video among others on this channel, still brings great value on how to improve one's skill + knowledge on the ice. Not many UA-cam tutorials could boast such a feat. Bravo. To another 11 years!🎉
You have some great videos. On this one, you should mention that your weight is on the balls of your feet, bend knees, and then you need to scrape ice with leading foot (inside edge) on side that you want to stop. Once you start scraping (controlled slide), then allow the other foot (outside edge) to join in the slide (bend knees and slide as long as possible to practice). Then add in sitting down during slide to put more weight on blades to stop quicker. Beginners should practice with one foot (lead foot) turned in (toe in)...put most of your weight on opposite foot (going straight) and scrape ice on inside edge of leading foot as long as possible with turned in skate to get the feel of scraping the ice. Then slowly add turning your hips as you are sliding.
Don’t use too much edge
I couldn’t stop on my left side for a long time so I did lessons with a coach and instead of making me have my foot at a really steep angle she had me put my foot more upright
stopping on my weaker side is like writing with my opposite hand and the weird part is that i can like fully fell and visualize my self stopping on my weak side but i cant on my strong lol like i feel like i cant stop on my stronger side if i visualize it
For some reason when I stop I always use one foot.
same bro i’ve gotten better at not using one foot but
Search my channel for outside edge drill. There are lots of drills you can use to improve your confidence and control. Dont forget to use the forum page at hockey tutorial . c o m if you want more help. Thanks for watching.
Great tute thanks mate! Ex hockey player of 50 years old and 'everyday' inline hockey skater, I have recent access to a bit of ice for the winter so am going to get back on it!! Cheers for all of the hockey and skating tutorials and have a great New Year, bud!!
For anyone reading this my coach taught me to stop on my weak side & what he had me do made it very simple & quick to learn, I’ll share it with you guys.
1.) Get your skate blades really dull if possible (that’s about it) lol.
Me personally I used a pair of my back up skates & skated at multiple skate sessions and put a lot of wear on my blades to get them really dull. Dull as in they were wanting to slide out from under my feet while doing crossovers. After I got them that way it was really simple for me to get my position correct & lean back properly. I didn’t have to really worry about if I had a bad formation I’d catch a edge and flip fowards over my skates. It made it really easy to learn on my weak side and to find the right posture. I learned on my weak side in an hour doing this & it carried on to now I can do it as good as my normal side. Good luck!
Thanks for watching. I'm actually working on that as we speak. If you join the hockeytutorial. com/ forum page or Facebook page, I'll be able to keep you up dated. I hope you'll share my videos and subscribe to the channel. Thanks again.
this has been rally helping me thank you
Thanks Chris, awesome video again. Thanks.
thank you for this, helped a bunch
Thank you bro. Your videos are amazing!
Thank you bro you have been helping me for so long
Chelmsford ice rink (essex)
Thanks man, Try these and shoot-arounds :D
Great tutorial! I will try it tomorrow :)
Always been stronger stopping my right foot and weaker on my left and was confused and concerned about twisting my ankle. It is interesting to see the science behind stopping correctly and it takes a lot of practice, for sure! Thanks for the tips btw! I will be putting this to practice and see if I can get both sides perfected. Then I will be very sore. Then I will hopefully be an all-star! lol Thanks again! 🇨🇦
This is a very handy video, outlining exactly how the edges on the skate need to be placed, this is very helpful for me as a beginner whose Bauer skates have seen more dust than ice!...Time to dust them off and hit the ice haha many thanks
I like your recommendation to do it on alternate sides in order to identify what you are doing differently. I was having trouble with the left backwards hockey stop, so tried your suggestion. It turns out I was using the wrong part of the blade. Once I moved my weight to the centre rather than the front, my left backwards hockey stop improved markedly. Many thanks. :)
hey you rly try to explain. I love it and all of your tutorials. I would be so happy to have you as my coach. :D
Great tutorial! From my experience ( I am right now practicing hockey stop on the weaker side) the MOST important thing to me was to sharpen my skates from 3/4" to 1". This dramatically changed my performance :) My weight is 84kg. Good luck to everyone practicing right now!
I'm 90 kg and was on 5/8, was really difficult to stop. Is it my skate or blade 😂
Danke!
Quality videos. Any chance you can convince the people at Riverside to an hour or two of no-touch pick-up hockey? I know a few people who would definitely join in
great
this guy's amasing! excellet presetation skills
Glad i could help you :D
the bit on the edges was really good.
this is really helpful!
Hey is this riverside? I skate there!
what can i do to to imrpove my outside edge? i can barely bring it in
What muscles are used during the hockey stop?
Thanks. I can sort of do it on my strong side, but I find it impossible on my weak side. I'll see how I do now after watching your video.
WalksWithTurkeys how did it go?
I can now do an inside edges hockey stop on both sides, but not yet an inside and outside edges one. Someone gave me a tip, go slowly, equal weight on both legs, then quickly pivot each foot about the ball, whilst tilting each blade back a bit. I just about did it. Now to speed it up.
WalksWithTurkeys I still can't do on my weak side. I can just hockeystop to the right with just the inside edge. the other leg either goes up or to the side to make a "sideway T-stop".
Feels like i'm gonna fall each time. how did you do it? did you just scream Yolo and turned to stop, or did you "train" something before doing it?
There are videos on UA-cam which show you how to learn starting with a one foot snow plough, which is basically half the snow plough if that makes sense. Once you have that, you learn to rotate your body, and pull the trailing foot around. Getting the trailing foot to use the outside edge is the hard part. I can now do it on the right turn, not the left. Also, I recommend you practise one foot glides on inside and outside edges, in order to learn edge control. Forward scissors skating may help too.
hey is hockey stop only for hockey or can it be done(properly) with figure skates
im a begginer
Best tutorial thanks from Québec xx ( u are so sweet boy)
Vive le Québec
Trying to get back into hockey at 25 years is not like riding a bike....shooting on right side and not able to hockey stop on my left side isnt a good combo...good video with great ideas to practice 🎉
You give some very good tips here in your video. Thank you. Someone writes here that you should have your skates dull? I have been skating all my life for decades and I never heard of such a tip. I think a lot depends on your ice skate shoes and your blades. If you have good shoes, good support around your ankles, and sharp blades, the standard is a 3/8 groove for the blades, you would gain confidence to do all this. The rental shoes at most ice rinks are trash. Those shoes are dangerous. Invest in buying your own pair of skates. Do not buy 20 dollar shoes. Good shoes are expensive. I remember when I bought my first pair if ice skates. They cost me around $ 65 dollars. Then a few years later I bought myself a $ 300 dollar pair of ice skates. Now, more years have passed and I think I will invest in a still better pair of skates that are out there because I intend to do ice skating for the rest of my life. The new shoes out there mold to the shape of your feet. That is so awesome. If you have dull skates your feet are going to be sliding all over. If your blades have a very deep groove then you might break your ankles because the edges would be so sharp that they will catch in the ice and you would not be able to shave the ice that easily and stop. You would stop instantly of course if you break your ankles, but you don't want that. You want to be able to stop without causing your body any pain. A sharp blade lets you grip the ice better, for turns, acceleration, stops, crossovers, etc. I do T stops or one foot stops on the ice for show sometimes, but if the ice is also torn and cracked you could easily break your ankles with this fancy stop. The ice should be smooth and not broken. It is only logical. You practice safety when you are doing these things on the ice. You don't overdo it or go beyond your limits. Mastering the T stops on both sides, weak and strong sides, took me 30 years !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is the hardest stop to learn, so everything takes time. Patience pays ladies and gentlemen and keep on ice skating. Your body will thank you because of its cardiovascular benefits.
Really appreciate you're tips. I'm really confident on inline hockey skates. I can T stop and hockey stop really well. However, I'm just learning to ice skate and I used rentals at an outdoor public rink that was very busy and the ice was heavily rutted. I was able to skate really well but when trying to hockey stop and T stop like I would on inline skates it just would happen as the skates would bite instead of sliding/shaving the ice. Now I know it's probably the combination of the ice being shit and also being on rentals.
great tutorial Chris! my strong side is the opposite of yours... I am right handed too... I guess I just learned backwards... I also try the snow plow technic too to help me start into the stop on my weak side a little sooner... still not good at it but helps me get my balance better stopping on my left... I need to work on it... more I wonder if a slide board would help?
he talks to fast
Hasnain Aziz I don't know who "fast" is, but he also talks to me.
You are right handed?is your left leg in front or your right leg? reply pls
+Barbara Walters XD
Same I'm right-handed but my left skate is dominant for the hockey stop
was practicing this the other day when i went and i could kinda do it with my left in front but with my right i didn’t even slide
Can You make a heel stop video
Don't stop with your heel. It digs into the ice to the point where it's permanent
I've yet to learn the hockey stop, but should I learn and practice it on both sides at the same time, or learn one side before the other?
Learn it one way then work on the other. Once you learn it one way, its just a case of reversing the instructions. Being able to stop first is important.
My strong side is turning left, but i find when i try to do it on my weaker side my blade jumps alot more. Is that because it is sharper on one side due to skating anticlockwise alot or just the angle of the blade?
None it is because there is not enough weight on your leg
This is going to be my second year during ice and I still cant stop on my weak side. It doesn't help that the local ice rink is closed
I am right-handed/footed yet my left side is far stronger.. I can only do a one-footed snow plow stop using my left foot, my right foot just cannot move. Even if I force the stop on my right side, it's like a dead foot.
chris, im sitting here wondering how stopping on your left, facing right is your stronger side, assuming i once heard you mentioned that you were right handed and right footed?.. because im also right handed and right footed and still can't hockey stop, it seems strange to me that you stopping with your left foot out in front is your stronger side? im still learning how to stop so when i go for a t-stop or a one footed snow plow, it's always my right foot- the right side of my body just naturally volunteers. because of this i was thinking that when i finally am able to do a hockey stop with both feet i'd be stopping like this 1:34.
I’m right handed and stopping with my left foot in front is more natural. I think it’s because the rear foot actually is the harder one to control as it uses the outside edge. The front foot is easier to control as it uses the inside edge.
Hello, I started hockey very recently (I'm 26 years old) and I'm currently practicing the hockey stops. I feel like I'm able to stop on my strong side (even tho I feel like my back skate doesn't really brake compared to the front one, maybe it's because I'm not enough distributing the strength in both legs?) , but my weak side just doesn't work at all, it feels like my leg can't even turn to brake... Is it normal when you're a beginner ? It's hard to practice the weak side when your leg doesn't turn at all, the only thing I manage to do in this situation is turning on myself (don't know the english word , sorry) , it's quite frustrating ... Do you have any advice ? Shoud I practice my strong side very much to learn how to perfectly stop , and then start working on my weak side, or should I work on both right now ? Thanks for your advices, your tutorials are great !
Practice both. It’s common that a skater has an easy side, and a hard side, just as you can write with one hand and not the other. But with practice both sides should be about equal.
How old were you in your "how to eagle stop" video back in 09? and how long have you been skating, and do you live in england? how did you come to enjoy skating so much? Sorry for the loads of questions, Its just interesting to hear how some people came to love skating and the sport of hockey in different parts of the world that may not be traditionally popular with the sport!
Probably around 14. Started skating in my teens and yes I live in England. Watched the Mighty ducks movies and was hooked to the ice since. Search this channel for "Hockeytutorial story" if you'd like to see why this all started.
I'm your fan since for two years and i watch often your films. Through watching this film i learning too english language but you speak a bit fast. All this ok. Thanks for your films, i can skating very well

Dude needs to tighten his skates. Looks like his ankles are going to snap.
LOL IKR.. First thing I noticed too.... Did you also noticed at 6:15 where he trying to show how to stop on both sides and he starts right foot forward and then when he comes back he does right foot forward again? lol.... too funny..
Mechwd Gaming Maybe he likes em loose
i think he was just showing his weak side
I was just thinking same thing dude, 1 size too big?
I don't lace skates tightly any more and that's why i'm skating better, especially in freestyle.
I've always had trouble stopping on my weak foot. Skated for years. Left footed but right handed. I can never seem to get the stop working I just turn. Sort of worked around it though.
Same with me
adamlondoner Learned in 3 days alone😑
learned it in 2 hours on my own :D
Weeblackie learned it in my fathers ball sack
Mine turn into a T stop or one foot stop for both feet
Hey this is confusing I can stop great on my right but every time I try on my left my leg goes forward
you might have a bad sharpening
im quite sad, i just found your video and i have to go to power skating today and im going to try what you said when i finish some drills or something but anyways the reason why im sad is that i just cant stop! i feel like my left foot is very very weak it feels like im going to trip and fall when i try to "mirror" the movements i figured how to slide my left skate but it doesnt stop there are drills where i absolutely HAVE to stop on my weak side and i look really dumb when i stop with my good side xD (btw this is my first year, next season is gonna be my second so i hope i will learn with time) i also just realized that i have trouble putting weight on my left leg except when i skate on just one leg or when im doing crossovers but when i stand, i feel like my right leg is more "heavy" than the other
Dan Mich Is something you have to train, over time you should put all your weight on your left foot (I mean really all your weight). You will stop on your weaker side but not as smooth as your right. At least it saves you from embarrassment
Curtis I yea im trying my best, thanks for the info :)
+Dan Mich same
If you know how to do cross overs start doing side shuffles over a few sticks.
Shuffling back and forward will naturally give you a feel for your edges and eventually help you stop on both sides.
whaa Chelmsford Ice rink?
My strong leg is my right but somehow my left (Weak) is a lot easier to do. Please tell me why this happens?
You may be stopping with your outside edge. This is not bad. You use the leg that is underneath you to stop, which helps when turning. Learning to use the inside edge is easier than the outside.
Is this synthetic ice
Corenus that’s what it looks like to
when im leaning i feel like im about to fall im scared to lean more with an angle any help?
thanks i'll try my best
bend your knees more
itsCrow ^ 100%

what rink o_O?
Bruh, I'm really confused...you keep saying to stop on your left side to use your outside edge and the diagram shows your boot steeply angled in from the left...I think you meant to say "to stop on your right side". Please clarify.
is the camraman wareing scates
Well there at an ice rink, so I would assume so
Right handed
how come when you skate your arms loo like your putting on a fake motion, why dont u do it normal?
He is tryinn to slow it down so its easier to visibly see the motions
Hi, i would like to comment on blade position. You should try to keep one blade ahead of the other while doing a hockey stop, like this -_ or _- , instead of parallel like this =. The reason being that, if while your stopping with skates parallel your back foot slips it will kick your front foot and your going down hard. This is less likely to happen if they are offset like -_ or _-. Also it is easier to step out of the stop to go in the opposite direction. Hopefully you understand what i mean.
Nice Reebok white K's
i feel like i cant put weight on my left leg (my weak side) any idea how to help?
just keep it down lol
Why is the audio >> 2X sped up
Ok.
the ice rink doesnt have someone who manages it during public hours cause of covid, so i turned into the only person in the whole ice rink who just skates the other way, i look stupid but i have to practice my weak side somehow
r u left handed or right handed
I’m weak on my right side
My right leg is the stronger side but im better at hockey stops on my left side 🤔
A mental cue that helped me is belly button over the inside thigh.
You use crossovers to start after a stop on your weak side, but you don't use crossovers on your strong side.
Perhaps your weak side is your strong side?
I'm a right handed writer, right handed shooter, left sided stopper lol. I can nottttt stop on my right foot... I don't know why. I just do a sharp turn. I can't stop like I can my left.
Sharp turn means you're putting too much weight on your heel. Keep your knees bent and shift more weight forward on your lead foot.
+Chris Edwards this work for me thx
I have same exact situation
Tighten your skates
Now do the single skate hockey stop on your outside edge. When you can do that then you can be an instructor. Good drills you need the practice your skates warble all over the place.
it's lewis Hamilton
*starts slow clap* Impressive
You are speaking so fast 😅 my English says „error“
ну так , ну так
My weak side is the left can't even stop
I learned it on my weaker side first
thats the stupidest thing iv heard
+Mike Litoris *I've
is it just me or are his skates too loose
I'm thinking the same
hablas mucho u.u
lol
I've been skating for 19 years. Off and on. I'd say I'm a good skater. BUT I will never be able to stop on my weaker side. Not even a remote chance while going slowly. I've come to realize it has little to do with the legs but the hips and glutes. It's like the ability to dance ... some people can shake their hips all they want but if they don't have rhythm then they don't have rhythm.
If you want to do it badly enough, you can learn! You have already learned to coordinate the movements properly on your good side, so you can do so on your bad side as well. It will take deliberate practice, thousands of repetitions of good movements, and, since you've mentioned hips and glutes, possibly some stretching and strengthening exercises if you have a mobility issue on one side of your body. But it's definitely achievable.
# haha 25 years I can’t don’t feel bad bro
It took me one year to master the hockey stop on my strong side, six more months for my weak side. Chris has a trick whereby you do it on your strong side, then try on your weak side. And repeat The idea is that the comparison helps you learn. It helped me a lot. I first mastered a half snow plough, turning one foot, then I learnt to pull the trailing foot round. Getting the outside edge on the trailing foot is tough, I learnt to keep my weight behind both feet. I started slowly, then built up speed as my balance improved. By the way, most people cannot hockey stop on both sides. Ah, and then there’s backwards ...
New haircut?
BENDER
if you watch his other vids hes not a bender its just that hes skates are obviously loose also its harder to demonstrate doing a stop slow so yeah
HEY MAN, CAN I BUY SOME CRACK OR COCAINE OFF OF YOU
Just... I'm so sorry, but I can't take you seriously in trousers and down vest. Go get your gear on, man!
lol
Dict- why you looking at his trousers so much they distract you. I agree he does look good in his pants.
guys a benderr
Matt Wright Stick to skateboarding hippie.
Speak slowly :-)
Put the speed in 0,75 ;) jeje
Skates are so loose...
Ohhh You talk sooo much and quick... but thanks for your films
Great tips but talks WAY too much, could cover the tips in about one third the time...... will give it s try tomorrow, as my weaker side is dead weight right now!
Talk to much i could not follw
Sorry speak much
You talk always so so much and it's so boring to listen :( More action - less words!
Not sure you understand the meaning of a tutorial. However, thank you for the feedback.....
keep doing your thing. You have an audience and we keep coming back for a reason.
His feedback wasn't very nice. You have a good technical understanding of ice skating. You could take your lessons to the next level with this: Say one small building block (what to "do", and how it feels), then demo. Share the next building block, then demo. Repeat until you build up the whole performance. This process will help people succeed more, and get you more thumbs up :) (Source: I have my CSIA Canadian Ski Instructor Alliance level 3 teach, CASI Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors level 2 teach, ICP inline certification program level 2, race coach 1, and am about to graduate with a masters of education.)
Keep doing what you're doing man.
Too many instructors oversimplify or trivialize explanations because they forget what it's like in a beginner's mindset. "Just do this, just do that," all you gotta do is... etc. Sometimes they fail to explain any of the nuances at all. The words give actions context, it's more cerebral, maybe some people can't handle that.
The best practitioners don't necessarily make good teachers, in fact sometimes it's the opposite. Your explanations are clear, and detailed enough that you eventually touch on most if not all the points that a new skater would naturally be curious about.
You are talking too much.
Not the best skater.
Looks like you got 2 weak sides?
