I'm such a beginner to skating (44 years old now), I just want to be able to skate well so I'm watching videos as I can't find a teacher where I am yet. You are probably the best skater I've seen, so much skill it's amazing...but I think that also has a negative effect on a beginner because I feel like I can't even begin to do most of what you're explaining 😂

When I played hockey I wish I was half as good as this guy, I am over 60 now and I really enjoy the sport of hockey. I don’t know if this instructor has clinics in different parts of the country but he should. If my daughter was into hockey I would like her attend his clinics. My daughter who is an adult now became a marathon runner and never was into watching or playing hockey.
A+ video here. Going to use some of the outside edge drills to improve my stopping.

When I first viewed this a few years ago, I could do none of the drills. Now I can do most of them, but I can still find plenty to help me improve further. The only area of disagreement is that my coach tells me not to lean my upper body in when doing crossovers. She also gets me doing lots of skating in a circle drills with only one leg moving to improve my crossovers. I’m not fast, but that’s because I’m old. Excellent video, I’m sure I’ll watch it more times.

Your vids are an amazing resource. I send these videos out before practice to all the parents to show their players. For practice, I demo then have them do it. It makes a huge difference. Saves me time and helps the player visualize before they come to practice. Thanks!

This guy is a good coach! The only comment I have in terms of practical feedback is to slow down some of the different skills; especially when transitioning from one drill to the next.

Dude, your tight turn tip was dead on! I thought going into a turn you needed to go soft on the cross overs out, which resulted in slow speed on the exit. Then, I watched your video about pushing HARD on the heels, so you hear it. Well I tried that, hard into the ice, pushed off fast, and the technique made my turn sharper and way faster. Great videos!
iTrain Hockey... I wish I learned to skate like this... and I hope everyone who watches your videos understands how important these lessons are. You can't be a good hockey player if you aren't a strong skater!

Excellent instruction throughout. Very sound established standards and demonstrated as well as can be. He's on a much deeper cut (hollow) - perhaps 8/16 - to that of some of us who choose to go flatter 14/16, 15/16, 1", 1"+ which, in his case - his deep hollow - favors his deeper edging maneuvers/grip on the ice. The amount of hollow is, of course, personal preference, as well, player position. He should point out his established hollow and give a light general discussion on hollow influence, additionally demonstrate the influence of say a set of runners cut at 8/16 to another cut at 15/16, etc........................

As someone coming into the game so late, I really appreciate your videos. They really help me understand the nuances of each skill in order to weed out a lot of wasted steps and errors. Using this series as a guide, every single time I step out on the ice I'm better than I was before. Love it!
Thanks for these wonderful vids. I've been an inline hockey player (i'm spanish) for my whole life, and this year living in Austria i started playing ice hockey. Really helped me to make the transition much smoother :)

My son is in learn to skate. Many of these drills are being taught but there are so many kids in the class that he's not picking up as quickly as he should and so can you please create a learning video for each of these moves. A learn to skate series. We can watch the video together then go to the rink to practice them.

When stopping on your inside edge one footed. How do you transition your foot sideways to initiate the turn. I try but I just turn on one foot? Or catch the edge and fall. I need a tip

Watch an NHL game and you'll see these drills in action, garuanteed. They always say what seperates NHL regulars from career minor leageurs is skating ability. Stick handling is the easy part. Sydney Crosby is a skating clinic every game, without fail.

curious - on these 'half crossovers' also called 'running crossovers' do you just plan the foot down the ice or slam it with force? and also how far off to the toe is the weight? Assuming the full blade is on the ice is the weight completely off the heel?
Since in normal crossovers the weight is firmly on the heel how do you prevent the blades form fishtailing if the weight is transferred to the toe?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
Sean, fantastic video and instruction. Could you speak to the effect of radius of hollow when learning the stopping skills? I've found that most people trying to learn stopping, especially on the outside edges, are impeded by a ROH that is too deep. The skate bites too much, which makes finding the sweet spot when first learning far too difficult. Most folks go with the standard sharpening at their local pro shop which is usually 1/2" or close to that, which offers quite a bit of bite. Something like a 7/8" or 1" ROH I've found to be very helpful when learning the t-stop or outside edge stopping skills. I was in my 40's before I figured this out; wish someone had taught me a bit about this when I was first learning - would have accelerated my development much more quickly.

I've never played competitive hockey and I've only done hockey school once. I play beer league and pick-up 2-4 times a week. For some reason I've never fully understood how to properly do cross-overs and I seem to only be able to do them to the right but to the left doesn't make sense to me lol. Backwards cross-overs are the same. Maybe I'm right brained I don't know lol.
