    ***UPDATE***
    Vividstorm originally sponsored this video with the screen as payment, but behind the scenes they have since given me multiple reasons to distrust them as an organisation, so I no longer recommend this screen. Having watched my friend Rob from the Hookup review multiple screens including this one I feel more comfortable recommending you watch Rob's video instead to make a more informed choice. Rob deserves the commission more than Vividstorm deserve your money.

      Alr screens are cool and all but theyre too expensive atm. Also it's kind of pointless to use a ust with a an alr screen as a tv replacement from a cost perspective as led tvs essentially last forever, however $6000 dollar projectors only last 25000 hours and you cannot replace the light source. So it's very expensive to use it as a tv replacement unless youre rich and can afford to go through usts

    Like anything, there are tradeoffs. I spent a bunch of years using a projector with a high-gain screen (which has some but not all of the advantages of this sort of screen). Upsides were the comparably low price and the large size. I would have had to pay multiple times more to get a TV the same size as my projector setup. Downsides were contrast ratio (even an ALR screen will never be as good as an OLED unless your room is pitch black), warmup time (not just startup, but waiting for it to get up to temp so the brightness/focus are at their final levels), imperfect focus (perhaps mitigated by newer projectors, but adjusting focus required me to stand far enough away from the screen that I couldn't tell if it was perfectly focused or not), and ongoing maintenance costs (replacement projector bulbs cost a fortune and dust eventually got inside the light engine over the years). I moved to a modern OLED TV, and while I miss the larger projector screen size, I find myself using the TV way more than I used the projector because the TV is so much faster to get going and so much less hassle.
    That said, I'd still consider a projector setup in my current home if I had the money to spare for a high-end setup. A screen lowering from the ceiling in front of my TV, combined with a short-throw projector mounted on the ceiling above the couch? I could get a projector screen nearly 5x the surface area of my TV, more than making up for any of the shortcomings of a projector by just the sheer humungo size.

    • @roochiecooch

      Have you seen BenQ’s newer projectors? I just saw one at my friends house who works for a distributor of theirs. It uses a new backlight which is LED and it has a much brighter perceived brightness than the older halide and other types of ballasted lamps. Which have a long warm up time and do have a shift in color temp as they’re coming up to operating temp. The new BenQ projector started up in a mere 10 or 15 seconds and was ready to go right then. Had great contrast on his screen. Don’t know if it was ALR as I just found out what they are in this video lol. But I was thoroughly impressed. As he has hidden the screen in a frame so well it looks like a TV. Because the contrast was so good it convinced me that I was looking at a regular TV until I asked him how big it was and he said 110 inches and that it could be even bigger if he got a bigger screen. That’s when it hit me it was a projector. Since I didn’t bother to look up at the ceiling before then. So with the modern technology bringing down prices on different options for lighting and materials for screens, these really are so good now that it’s almost indistinguishable from TV’s for nearly anyone who’s not extremely into critiquing picture quality and black levels. The sharpness was as good as any other 4K Tv I’ve ever seen as well even up close.

    Interesting video. Alas our living room is just too small to have anything bigger than we already have, but worth noting that the Samsung QLEDs we have don't suffer from screen glare so we no longer have to watch TV with the curtains shut. It was a big part of why we went for the specific model we did as glare in our south facing living room made it impossible to watch TV without closed curtains during the day.

      that's what i'm thinking, i.e. if your viewing area experience doesn't support anything bigger than 75" than the cost of a current generation samsung qled, that can be left in artwork mode when not in use, is going to be more economical and the results equally as good. i guess i can see this if the room you use naturally has you wanting to put tv in front of a window.

    Glad to see you back on the screen. You seemed to be in a dark place. Never let things that you cannot control have an adverse effect on you. It only leads to madness thinking about it. I've had a tortured life, so I know a bit about how to endure it.
    I'm all for projectors also and I'm really glad that the technology has come up to a more useable level. Just having a more modular system makes maintenance or component replacement more affordable also. If the projector has an issue, you're not going to replace the screen. I imagine that at some point they will integrate a Wi-Fi soundbar but I hope they keep the non-audio version available for those of us who have home theaters.
    This has been another excellent production and didn't seem as unscripted as you claimed. I could watch your presentations every day. Informative and entertaining, there's even some action (being the screen, lol). I was surprised about the static shock because of how damaging it can be to electronics. That's probably got more to do with your carpet than the packaging materials though. I highly recommend not putting electronics on nylon type carpet. Good luck with your new toy. I'm certain you will enjoy it. Be careful with the more hard-core content. The close up shots on a screen as large as that could give ya nightmares, lol.

UA-cam gives you stats after every video and for some reason they're just showing my videos to less and less people, it's quite frightening when your livelihood depends on the success of every video. @@paulhibbert It may be as simple as all the anti-woke broadcasts going on. Your market is the consumer and there are boycotts on Disney, Target, Budweiser and Starbucks right now, just to name a few. It's probably got more to do with their increasing popularity of the "hype stories" than a lack of interest in your productions. Business wise, all you can really do is to diversify under a different name perhaps (or not) and add a different topic to ride the popular waves.
      When I got out of college, I had a high tech suit job in the early eighties. Along came the recession and I ended up as a transmission mechanic for the next decade. During that time I observed that in good economies, sales were up and during the tough times, the repair industry was up. I chose to become a licensed contractor in all of the trades while also maintaining a full service automotive shop of my own. Having these two businesses allowed me to weather any economy and have a potential place to move good employees around to so that they could get by also.
      Never put your "eggs" in one basket, They will get broken as you are currently feeling the pressure on your eggs right now, lol. Yes, of course it's a lot more work. Hiring family to help or manage such endeavors is a wise choice since they are less likely to see you fail because of their actions or non-actions. Your productions are plenty diverse so you know how valuable a trait like that is and I'm sure that there's something that you would enjoy doing for an extra source of revenue too.
      Never give up, never surrender. If you don't like the way the wind is blowing...change your course heading. The security of having two income streams will give you the tranquility you're looking for as long as you don't over tax yourself and burn out. That's why you enlist trustworthy family members that don't want you to fail.
      Best of luck

Our living room is like a greenhouse so I can attest that a projector simply doesn't cut it unless you can block most of the windows. Even the backup TV is quite difficult to see. But from around twighlight the picture quality and brightness is amazing even at 120". With 100" screen that's literally 2/3 the size and thus 50% brighter, it would be bright enough for most peoples' living rooms, if only it meant having to close the curtains a little.

      I've enjoyed learning new skills, but spending a full day every week finding SEO search terms, and researching how to make the perfect title and thumbnail, and reading contracts, and doing market research is horrible, especially when it doesn't always work out and you watch 40-60 hours of hard work actually end up hurting the channel.
      11AM on a Saturday can be a really upsetting time when you open up the stats to find the words "fewer regular viewers are choosing to watch this video decreasing it's reach, consider changing the thumbnail and title", and "this video is currently 9th of the last 10 videos for number of hits in this time frame".
      Once you realise that those things mean UA-cam will show you to less people next week you start to obsess over those figures and depression shortly follows. It's been a tough month watching every metric head in the wrong direction because I don't know when it will stop dipping, and whether this is the beginning of the end of my UA-cam career simply because I couldn't please a robot.

    Intriguing but the quality of the projected image surely has a lot to do with the quality of the projector, a device which comes in various flavors. Perhaps the actual model projector wasn't mentioned because this video is a promo for the screen. All the same, it would be nice to know the spec for the projector being used to obtain the quality of the projected image while remaining silent on the manufacturer name. Other questions linger like a TV is designed for live broadcasts out of the box. To obtain that feature with a projector is doable for sure but more involved. At the end of the day, I'm wondering if I'd prefer a device I can just hang on the wall and it's ready to go without the addition and hassle of more devices.

    Genuinely interested in this tech but ideally would want the screen mounted from a ceiling to drop down, then could I fit surround speakers behind without affecting acoustic performance? We then need to move onto projector input lag for gaming, I'm certain projectors don't come close to say the likes of a modern LG OLED.

    Since the surface has a side, I'm guessing this won't work if you hang it upside down? I like the idea of a clean living room so that means hanging the projector and screen from the ceiling, technically if both are hanging it should work right? Is this supported?

      @paulhibbert  Рік тому +1

      You've surmised correctly. They do drop down screens too though, so that would be what you would want, just make sure you pick the right one for whether you're using UST or ceiling mounted projector.

    I use my ultrashort throw projector on a nice flat white wall without a screen. When I was looking at getting the projector I was told not to use a retractable screen with the ultra short throw as those screens were not flat enough. and due to the extreme angle used by ultra short throws any uneveness on the screen would be very noticeable compared to a project that has a longer throw.
    is this not the case?
    should I be looking at a retractable screen?

    • @deanwilliams433
      @deanwilliams433 Рік тому

      Depends on the quality of the retractable screen. These are really expensive, but I would still go for a fixed ALR screen and please don't use a plain wall to project an image if you have any care about PQ

    So....would I be correct to presume that the combination of the Vividstorm ALR projector screen and the Anker Cosmos Laser 4K Projector is effectively the best home viewing experience you can get for the money or is there a pitfall I'm not aware of?

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  Рік тому +1

      I suspect an UST yields better results because of the short proximity to the screen, but I could be wrong.
      If you wanted to use an ALR screen with the anker cosmos you would need the non short throw version of the screen though, and I think you would need to ceiling mount the projector.

    Isn't there some formula for determining the distance you sit from screen and the size it should be, i.e. what's the distance that warrants going for 100" and is that common for most movie room viewing environments? Are you more likely to get motion sickness watching content on a big screen size if you are not far enough back?
