- 2021 update: I made a follow-up video to measure flow rate: • Harbor Freight Portabl...
Harbor Freight has since replaced this pump with the new Drummond item #63316, but the specs are still the same.
This is a quick video review of the Harbor Freight Portable Utility Pump, item 65836.

It works pretty well; it's very ideal for draining home pools, spas, or water features.

I have 2 of these pumps i am very happy with the quality my boat sank with these pumps in it. my boat was under for over 6 months in saltwater. I soked both pumps in diesel and took apart one of them the only thing i had to replace was one brush. i found out i had to change the bush after i was using it after i cleaned it up and it started to smoke. once i find the bush replacement i am back in business
Thanks man, I am looking for a transfer pump for same purpose I don’t like the submersible pump that sits on the cover.
I packed the pump away for the winter, but I would estimate the PSI at 20-25 given the flow rate.
Yes, you can attach a nozzle to the end of your exhaust hose, but I don't think the pressure will be very effective.
If you use the shorter hose where the water goes in from it will perform a lot better even having a shorter hose on the other end as well helps even more
thank you for that Video ...it helped me out a lot. much appreciated.
thank you
How's the pump holding up after all this time?
Nice, trying to buy one to use on Bonza water slid on a lake with generator
I'm pumping out a 32 gal barrel, the leagh is 50ft..jw what's the easy was to replace the brush?I'm have a hard time putting in back in the brush holder.
can you put nozzle on the end? .. will pump make little pressure? ... thanks.
cut down on your hose length, way to long of hose for what your doing, that is really holing back the flow... but useful pump...
You tarped pool, seems like a great idea. How did you keep tarp in place, did any of that dirty water leak into pool? Please advise would love to do the same too mine. Thanks best regards
Does anyone know where to get bushings for this pump
That pump kicking ass dude how mutch did u pay for it I need one for my basement
Hi I had this little pump working in a flooded basement it save my basement . The water table raised up and broke my basement floor I have thousands of gallons rushing in my basement this pump saved my basement. My basement would have had three feet of water . Thank you for the designer let's save my basement with this utility pump
That's what we're using our transfer pump for. It's been running for two hours twice a day for weeks and just keeps going. Going to have to replace the brushes soon. The one I got isn't quite as noisy as the one in the video - and not nearly as noisy as the Shop Vac with a built-in pump that it replaced.
Willie's Lawn Care Service how mutch did u pay brother I need one for the same job you did but my basement is not that bad
Thanks Will.
It could be an hour but some of that seeps through the cover and makes it seem to take forever. The worst thing about that is that the water still on it is so darned heavy that you will not be able to pull that cover out with it still on no matter how much help you have. Our pool is 24 ft above ground and round and so that is why that water would be to heavy, for us anyhow.
How much $?
Do you think this would be good for pumping water from a creek to water my lawn? I have a huge double lot and would need it to work through a 100ft hose. I ask as I would be using it a lot and I could see it wearing out pretty quickly.
funkyjones It's possible, but I'd recommend a stronger model. It can pump through a 100' hose, but probably not straight up, depending on how far the creek is below your property and how you're watering. It will not give you the ~50 PSI you need for an irrigation system or regular lawn sprinkler. I've run this model for 8 hours at a time with no issue though. As long as it is pulling water, it shouldn't burn out.
This motor comes with an extra set of brushes. The brushes are quite soft and wear out quickly, good luck in ordering replacement brushes they do not have them. I have been this route, better to go with a Wayne pump, at least you can get parts.
have you had to replace the brushes yet, if so how much and where did you find them
Still original brushes. Probably cheaper & faster to replace the whole unit. I believe there are previous comments in this thread about others not even able to find replacement brushes. What's your time worth? :)
Nearly all these utility pump reviews fail to say up to what depth the pump can suck out the water. Maybe that depends on the end point of the hose that's making contact with the water? What if I spill 3 or 4 gallons of water on a garage surface. Can this thing suck that water up?
If you spill 3-4 gallons in a garage, you need a shop vac--not a utility pump. What you are looking for is the maximum static elevation head for the pump. I'm guessing most reviewers either don't know it, or don't know how to calculate it. Regardless, It's simple physics. Here's a link to get you started. www.engineeringtoolbox.com/pumping-water-horsepower-d_753.html
He calls his dog 'bud'
This guy is cool.
if your pool have drain plughole in the bottom, why you just didn't pull the cover off, letting the water go in the pool, and then just letting it go down the pool drain?
+Vytautas Poška Good question! There was a TON of debris, pollen, and other biomass on the cover that I wanted to keep out of the pool, otherwise it would have thrown my chemical balance off, and contributed to dirty filters that I really hate cleaning. Trying to pull the cover off without removing the ~2000 gallons of water on it first would've allowed all of the debris to fall into the pool. Also, using the pump seemed like more fun :)
Thanks for explanation, you know, I don't have a pool and I was just curious about it :)
I don't know why they don't just make it use a induction motor so you don't have to keep changing the brushes.
I've abused mine for 15 years & it's still working
I’ve got a countyline pump, 1/2 hp 1,420 gallons per hour. Looks just like yours, but it won’t suck and spit if you get my drift. It won’t pull up from the pool, and nothing is coming out from the exhaust.
Depending on elevation of pool compared to the pump & exhaust, and lengths of hoses, there's probably just not enough suction. Try moving the pump closer to the pool with no exit hose to see if it can get anything to pump out once primed. If not, your pump may be defective or just too weak.
@@WillHennegan did that. Pump is at 0’ and right next to the water in a flat surface. Hoses are brand new. Tightened adapters with vice grips. Even after I got it brand new. No suction on either end. Tractor supply said return it for money back, since no other pump is in the store.
@@drick7584hey did you figure this out? Having the exact same problem right now. Thanks
Potable & simply
Intake hose: what type you suggest to prevent the suction from collapsing it?
Any sturdy garden hose should do it. If your intake hose is collapsing, it may be clogged or not sufficiently primed.
Will Hennegan yeah the strainer gets clogged then the hose collapse. I'll try a kink free hose. Thanks for the reply
@@WillHennegan
Good video. Could it also be used to vacuum a pool to waste (like dead algae), or is it not heavy duty enough?! Just curious, as I'm looking for a "deck pump" for my pool, whereby I could vacuum it out without running it through my cartridge filter. Since I have a cartridge filter, I don't have a vacuum - to - waste setting, like you'd find on a sand or diatomaceous earth filter.
@@charlies.5777 Ehh possibly. If i need to drain the entire pool, i usd a bigger, much faster submersible pump with a 2" discharge hose.
@@WillHennegan
Thanks for your reply - I'll take your advice. Since a lot of Harbor Freight's products are a good bang for the buck, I enjoy reviews like this!!👍
I bought this thing and hooked up the hoses filled the pump and replaced the plug. Turned it on and............absolutely nothing. Any idea what the heck I'm doing wrong or did I get a lemon?
Try shortening the intake hose and disconnecting the exhaust hose. If still nothing, you may have gotten a defective unit :/
Thanks. I'll try that.
my pump is pumping really slow any idea why?
What is the elevation difference between your pump and the water source? what is that hose length?
do you think i could use it to suck leaves out of a pool thanks
No, leaves would clog the heck out of this water pump. You would need something closer to a wet/dry vac and a 3" diameter hose or larger.
Will Hennegan thanks brother I didnt think so I happen to see another guy on youtube draining a pool with leaves in it and I was thinking it was a bad idea.
Hi can this be operated buy a solar panel??
If you have enough solar panels to put out 1000+ watts, then yes, probably.
"Exhaust hose"? Why not just say inlet and outlet?
+wetvent - Dam technical, LOL. Inlet / Outlet / Exhaust Hose / Entry Hose... Then the DAM HOSE down the street can't suck it right.... Whatever float your boat I guessed, LMFAO
wetvent bet he's a car guy
Do you possibly think this pump will be use for pumping water in a 25ft well?
I'm trying now...
I can't seem to get it to go.....
+marc dorizar with a 25' deep well, I don't think this pump will work for you. I'd
recommend a submersible pump for a well, like this: goo.gl/0XRHy1
+Derek Carson Did you prime it? Unless you do that with this pump it will do nothing. Some need primed and some don't.
It loses prime even with a foot valve. The only way I get anything is to pump the hose up and down with my arms while the pump is primed running and the foot valve is in place. I still continue to lose prime and my arms became very sore after an hour or so as I'm sure you can imagine.
I just can't get it to start flowing.
Be sure to fill the pump and feeder hose completely with water before starting the pump. Move the pump closer to the source.
Same shit here..barely anything comes out
Where can one get replacement brushes??
Clinton Hemphill For the motor? There might be generic or common brushes out there that will be compatible, but for time/effort/cost it might just be better to replace the whole unit or upgrade to a better one if yours burned out :/
Will Hennegan Ya, for the motor i guess. I've read there are a second set of brushes but I dont even know what that means exactly or what they're for. Likewise, I'm curious how much you can use it before they need changed. I'm wanting to water my lawn (every couple weeks) for about 8 hours each time. Do you think this will work ok? I'm new to the electric pump category and Harbor Freight has this on sale for $64 right now..
how much was this pump if you don't mind me asking?
Follow the link in the description.
I got mine for $65 after the 20% off coupon.
how can I pull water out of my well to water my plants with this. 30 feet down...
+Derek Carson with a 30' head, I don't think this pump will work for you. I'd recommend a submersible pump for a well, like this: goo.gl/0XRHy1
+Will Hennegan mine says 125ft head...
+Derek Carson The issue is keeping the pump & intake hose primed with a 30' vertical drop: You can fill the pump easily, but once you power it on, the pump will expel the water in the pump quickly, and begin sucking in air from the intake hose, which it cannot do very well. That's why I would recommend a submersible pump.
+Derek Carson only thing I can think of is lowering the pump via hose & power cable down the well closer to the water level. This is risky though; be sure to keep the pump above water to avoid damage and electric shock. Fill the output hose with water to prime the pump and fire it up. It may take a minute or two to get flowing, but that's the best I can think of. Good luck!
+Will Hennegan ty I'm wondering if a foot valve at the bottom of the hose would help me?
What kind of hose did you use?.... I have heard that regular garden hoses will collapse because of the sucking pressure..
I just used regular garden hoses. This pump doesn't seem powerful enough to pull a vacuum on a garden hose, unless it's clogged. That being said, there's some physics to this: Make sure your pump is primed, and there is as much water in the inlet hose as possible before starting the pump (it's designed to move water, not air). You want the pump to be as close to the source as possible, and the outlet hose to end at a lower altitude than the pump to ensure best performance.
Ok....thanks..... I saw a comment on Harbor freights website about it... but you uknow first hand !
Why not use all that water to water your lawn?
Didn't need it, and water is cheap & abundant here. You grately underestimate how much I love my carbon footprint :). I'd also need a way to boost it up to 40-50 PSI for my irrigation system, which this pump would not do, and for which there is no economical solution.
Sounds like the engine on the Southwest Airline
I came to this video to see how you prime it before you start the full process
I don't think that is in the video, but I just fill the pump & intake line with water, as much as they'll hold, then fire it up.
Holy crap that thing is loud
+Dev Everything It is
+Dev Everything He said "not too loud"?! WTF?
+Dev Everything - I got one, it's Loud to me :///
Puzzie
I don't know why you didn't use that water and treat the pool
Since you don't want to read where I've already answered this in the comments here's the summary:
I had to pump the water off in order to remove the cover.
Since you don't have a pool, here's why that's important:
The cover serves 2 purposes: keeping existing pool water clean and pure, and keeping tons of winter biomass out (leaves, pollen, etc).
Water is cheap and abundant where I am. It would make no economic or environmental sense to pump disgusting, bacteria-ridden water into a clean pool shell, which would then clog my filters, subsequently requiring a cleaning or replacement.
I hope this answers your question. If you have an efficient & economic way to implement your idea, I'm all ears :)
800w is HUGE
+DragonsREpic I had a hand vac that was 800 watts. That POS kept getting hot and thus turned of by its thermal protection. It can be maddening to try to clean with such a piece of junk. That thing sucked!!!
not to loud aye. I was thinking the whole time damn that thing is loud as fuck....then you said not to loud lol...sarcasm i didn't pick up?
pugs2300 I
did you pour all of this water to storm water drain ?..please don't pour all of that water to house waste drain pipe, because it flood water treatment facility or make facility work harder for nothing.
Thanks Captain Planet. Yes, if you watched the video you would've seen this rain water went to a storm drain outside in my yard--the same place I put my used motor oil and antifreeze :)
Will Hennegan hahahahaha
+eric nguyen - Its Pool Water - That is RAIN / SNOW Water that accumulate through Winter. It's perfectly fine to put in the Drain, where do you think the Rain Water goes, up his arse???... If that was me, I would water the Grass with it, but it's ok for him to put in the Drain System, etc.... Plus, he pay for Sewage.... Learn to educate yourself before you comment, and as you can see... You need to Educate yourself ://
Too small pump for that job
It got the job done fast and cheap. Sounds like the perfect pump to me!
For that job is more suitable like this www.walmart.com/ip/Superior-Pump-1-4-HP-Utility-Pump/15125714
easy to install with greater hose diameter....
gadezso no, it would not be. I tried a similar model. The intake on the bottom would be blocked instantly by the pool cover tarp. But I appreciate the suggestion.
your pump is for deeper suction and ,to deliver high pressure, not to move large amount of water in short time
Why r u putting the water in the drain?
what a waste. water yr grass, yr trees, flowers, garden, etc
Bill Peirce, all that water was there because we had too much rain. You can have it if you come remove it after this season. I'm not sure where you live, but water is cheap and abundant here, and will be for a long time. I am not wasting what little property I have on things like water storage or composting barrels. It would take a decade to get a return on the investment if I wanted to capture it and feed it to my irrigation system, but if you're paying for it I will look into it. :)
Stop wasting kilobytes Bill. That 1.7Kb could have educated an African village.
Bill Peirce I was thinking same thing lol
Great review sport... how about filling a five gallon bucket and use a watch... then your review might be worth something... as it is you've now done a commercial (a poor one) for Harbor freight... since you're spilling water all over the place wouldn't it be worth mentioning if it's fuse or GFI protected... is it an AC or DC pump... a real complete job there sport... GRADE 'F' SEE ME AFTER CLASS....
+Riki B. Eyestarone Thanks Grandpa. You must be really fun at parties.
This is used on a GFCI/AFCI circuit with more than adequate 12ga feeds. There is no built-in fuse--your safety is in your own hands.
If I cared about exactly how accurate the flow rate was, I would've used my digital flow meter (more accurate than your 5-gal bucket). You're welcome to ask me nicely to do so when your done chugging your metamucil :)
This is high quality pump yes best there is
Doggy curious :)
go get 4 hp pump is better and faster
+ة_ة -_ة Thanks, and while you're at it get a Ferrari too. It's better & faster.
People purchase this pump most likely because it is within their budget or satisfies their volume needs. Everyone knows a 4 HP pump is better & faster, but not necessarily worth the extra investment for their use case.
this made for people who go camping
not made to use in house
this rich guy who has swimming pool in his house i think he can buy 4 hp pump
for poor people they can use this :
