Nah, I didn't mean making trance music with just FM synthesis lol, I meant in general I always liked electronic music a lot, and trance was the one genre I liked the most (alongside synthwave anyway), mostly because I always liked listening to Megaman ZX/ZX Advent's soundtrack, which a lot of it is full of trance music because of that, I was always curious on how to even make this kind of music and all the techniques that come with it, but honestly from what I can gather, FM synthesis will definitely be a pretty big part with making this sorta stuff, heh

I don't know if you take random requests (or if that's reserved for patrons) but I'd kill for you to cover Outride a Crisis with your FM programming wizardry. I always felt that the composition was incredible, but the instrumentation used back then was pretty weak... and I know _you can fix that._

Yes. As far as I'm aware the Yamaha chip inside the Megadrive has four oscillators per channel. Providing one of those oscillator can go below 20hz you can create a say a low pass filter making the overall sound sound fuller.
...aside for the fact that you only have 6 channels, a PCM sample that also uses the sixth FM channel slot, two square notes, and a noise that I can only describe as either like a compressed maraca sample or someone sounding out “F”. Also those aforementioned square notes and “F” coming from an entirely different sound chip that *isn’t FM* (SN7818) Aside for that, yeah, not much limitations.

I was late into Pulseman (although I bought it like, 8 years ago) but DAMN does this game is crazy good, with some unique stuff going on + a brillant soundtrack on top of that. And it happens that "Stereo Protect" is my fav tune from the game so it's nice to hear this new (and fabulous) arrangement!

So I just bought new headphones and decided to put my sound card to the test on them with this and some other music. Dear god what have I been missing out on? I finally have a decent set of headphones again and I can't describe how much I missed this quality of sound. And this was definitely a good track to use to test it all out too (not just because of how good this rearrange is).
If Pulseman had a Sega Mega-CD port but Game Freak didn't want to waste CD space... Sonic Team programmed the past music in Sonic the Hedgehog CD instead of recording it in the studio for that reason, as they ran out of space on the disc while adding the music.

@@sleepyNovember_project чекнул, на том картридже впринцпе треки все простенькие с характерным сеговским звучанием, единственное да solar modulation интересно звучит, но точно не технологичней чем этот трек. Pulseman - India практически отсутствуют сеговские пеликания , почему и стало интересно, такое чувство что наложены дополнительные эффекты.

FM модуляция мощная вещь, там говорят каких звуков только не накрутишь, например в Сониках некоторые звуковые эффекты звучат так будто это просто звуковой файл, хотя они выполнены FM синтезом, так что это дело умений было, мало кто раньше видимо настолько заморачивался над полировкой каждого инструмента в играх, только если авторы саундтреков к улицам ярости и sonic 3D Blast, там например в музыке зоны Panic Puppet 2 основной синт звучит так будто он с небольшим эффектом реверберации и дилэем, но эффект дилэй достичь в музыке на сеге просто, а вот чтобы звук звучал так мягко как в этой Индии видимо надо постараться над его воссозданием.

It's a real shame that Sega didn't push for some more features for it's Megadrive sound capabilities. if it had more channels, more wave forms like saw, triangle, square, hell even a single cycle waveform sampler with reverb, delay and distortion effects it would be even more widely respected than the SID chip and most likely widely used today.
But then the machine would have to be more expensive too. I'm just disappointed the SMS' chip is so shit. Imagine the Megadrive could use the NES or Game Boy for additional channels.
A lot of the expenses the console had was making all the additional ports for the addons. Before the Mega CD that port was originally used for a some finance calculator, it's the reason the Motorola chip was gimped in processing power. Sega should have had extra ports where the cartridge slot if they were bothered about base hardware costs as this would have given them more modular capabilities but we all know that at that point in time Sega was more experimental than having any foresight.

If it were difficult (which I am not doubtful) 80s nd 90s were about using fm synthesis.. Then why did ppl find it difficult to program genny sound hardware? Was it d subpar toolkits or lack of actual knowledge of fm synthesis at bare metal level? Sorry guys so many questions just curious. Just wished my genesis sounded this amazing for every game I played. Tho there are notable scores tht genesis had but few compared to its vast library of games.

The closest you can get to that is the Neo Geo, which I believe used a different Yamaha chip.
