This video was so helpful! As a back of the packer and as someone who has finished DFL before, it gave me so much inspiration. I start to panic at the end of a race and worry about cut-offs. This video showed me, no matter how impossible it might feel, Just " One foot in front of the other" and the impossible is totally POSSIBLE! Thank you for the amazing content, Love your channel!
I’m so glad you found this one! This was an exciting experiment for me, and definitely has helped overcome some tough times since! I’m glad others can gain insight from my experiences. Thank you so much for supporting my channel!
Thanks for the video. I’m tapering for a 50 miler right now. It’s been a few years since my last ultra. Training hasn’t gone well, and this was a good reminder that it’s a mental game. Biggest learning I’ve ever had is to stay in (and enjoy) the moment. Never think about when you’re going to finish or even what the next mile will bring. Find your joy in the now, and every mile will be a delight (even the type 2 fun miles).
I’m glad you enjoyed it! I hope your 50 goes well and those are excellent tips/lessons. I say that all the time too, take the miles as they come and live/race only in the moment. Obviously I can do a better job of this as seen in this video. I got too caught up in what was left instead of focusing how to make the mile I was currently in feel better. I hope you crush your race! Which one are you doing? I’d love to hear how it goes afterwards!
I was there, too! Attempted the 50 miler and got to 47 with 6.5 to go (I also took a wrong turn early on) and had to stop at the aid station there. The mud was intense! It took me 14 hours to go 47 miles and it was dark again and getting cold. I was spent! Your tips are great, and your account of the mud is spot on!
Thank you! Congrats on the 47 miles! The mud made it significantly harder and much more taxing. My feet blistered pretty badly after all the sliding around. If I recall, aren’t you running Quest too in a few weeks? I’ll be there too so if you see my hairy face talking to a camera come say hey!
@@ScottRunsnStuff I wish I could run the Quest! That weekend is booked up with other plans. I'm hoping to do the Dahlgren Heritage Rail Trail 50k in August and then another attempt at a 50 miler in November. I might try the MST 50 miler next March again, but may wait until close to the race to register and see what the weather looks like! Would love less mud!
Can’t believe you avg that pace in the mud that long with AS stops. That’s really fast. And you added almost an hour to you time with the wrong turn. Total beast!!!
Yep! It was 15:50 total elapsed (race) pace, and I think 15:35 average moving pace? So a difference of 15s/mile over 35 miles means a stopped time of 525s or about 8-9 minutes of “stopped time” (over 9hrs) including aid stations and the screw up trying to figure out which way to go.
Thanks Aiyappa! Yes, sometimes the best thing about ultras isn’t actually in regards of how fast you can go, but how much you can learn and reflect along the way. Success comes not in crossing the finish line, but in figuring out what worked best, what didn’t work at all, and how to better apply those lessons next time. Even for my 100. Had I not even made it before the cutoff - or finished all 100 miles I still would count it as a success. Thats where “in whatever you do just do your best and the best will always happen” came from. If it IS your best how can that be a failure.
Beast Mode! Some of us back of the pack people, that run, do not finish much quicker. Lol. I am training for my first 50 miler in June, training hasn’t went as well as I wanted it too however, I am mentally tough, so hoping to complete the bucket list item! Loved the video!
Being mentally tough is way more advantageous then being physically tough, because not matter how strong you are if you push yourself to the max you’ll be hurting well before then end. It takes WAY more mental strength to finish super long races like 50mi/100k/100mi then it does physical strength! Thanks for watching and I really appreciate the comment!
Can’t believe you avg that pace in the mud that long with AS stops. That’s really fast. And you added almost an hour to you time with the wrong turn. Total beast!!! 32:57
Yeah I was a bit surprised too. My total elapsed (race) pace was 15:50, but I think the average moving pace was 15:35. So a difference of 15s/mi over 35mi, or 525 seconds = 8:45 of total ‘stopped’ time, including AS’s and the dumb mistake having to figure out which way to go back!
Preach that walk! You know how I feel about walking and what it can do to help prepare a runner for a wide range of events. I could have freaked out in early January when I injured my hamstring and had the Boston Marathon and Hellbender 100 to train for. Instead, I walked my training for the next two months. Now with a sucessful Boston behind me I am grateful for how much fitness I was able to build in those walking months. This is fantasitc content you are putting out! Keep it up :)
Thank you, Chris! I might end up making a video soon of ‘things I wish I knew as a beginner runner’ and touch on how often people have the “walking is bad” and “running 5 miles but having to take walking breaks in the middle” is a failure - mindset. Walking DOES make you a better runner, it strengthens different muscles, keeps you on your feet and moving - for longer and more steps then running does - and is still steady-state fat burning cardio. I’m happy to hear you finished Boston no longer injured and can’t wait to see you at Hellbender! I’ll be there all night!
Just watched the entire video. Pretty awesome man. Hope you can get back into the running spirit. I'm still new and I'm the motivation phase of running but I can see how hard it could be to start back up after being off for awhile. Can't wait to see more race videos. 🏃
Thank you!! Hoping I can eventually come back stronger and more fit then before! Right now though I’ve tried a few little runs here and there and am embarrassingly out of shape 😂! Somehow I’m still planning to do the Quest 50k in less than 5 weeks (one of the toughest 50ks in the entire country with almost 13,000’ of pure ascent!) We’ll see how it goes. It’ll be…. Interesting.
Thank you so much! I definitely had the ‘just walk a 50k’ mentality and didn’t quite realize how hard it is to do! (Obviously the mud and extra distance made it a bit tougher) but walking fast for 9-10+ hours is still not ‘that’ easy!
Interesting video, never would have considered walking a long race if i couldn't run it. Well done. I might consider something like this myself as i am not yet ready to run something of this distance.
It’s certainly a different type of ‘race’ experience. Walking/hiking still provides a lot of benefits even if you’re not able to run it due to injury or other reasons. I would definitely advise to practice before just jumping into a [much] longer distance then you typically go, as there is still potential for overuse injuries to develop if your body isn’t used to the distance, even if the intensity is low. Thanks for watching!
Scott, watched the entire video. Great job and tips. Ran/walked the 40-mile Naked Bavarian at the beginning of March. Scored a DFL @ 10:58:39. Barely made the cutoff times and the last 15 miles was more power walking (albeit way slower than your 17 min pace). DNF'd the same race in 2022, so making progress! That mud was horrendous, but at least you weren't rained on.
Wow good for you! And just to reiterate, last place is STILL a place! Nice work getting back and finishing something you previously didn’t, it takes a lot of courage to try again and show them who’s boss! And yes, the mud sucked. If I had a choice, I’d almost prefer to be rained on for 9hrs straight (provided no mud) then have clear conditions and the crap I dealt with 😂 - although, a day full of rain wouldn’t make for as clear of a video 🤷♂️🤷♂️. Thanks again for watching (the ENTIRE thing, I know it was kinda long), and best of luck with whatever else you have coming up next! Keep improving little by little and you’ll be surprised where it takes you!
I can't believe you didn't cheat and run some of this! I try to do those reflections you challenged us to do in my Strava activity descriptions. It is a great practice and I believe it makes me a better runner.
Man was it tempting 😂 Especially being around so many runners on such a “fast” course! Some call me stubborn, but when I set my sights on something I damn sure do my absolute best to stick to the goal/objective. And I love your lengthy story telling descriptions. Strava becomes much more of a training diary in that essence!
Great job getting that done, Scott! That was a terrific walking pace in some very nasty mud. It looked like a pretty good day to be out there at least. There might be something in between your approach of not training but racing anyway and mine of training all the time but never bothering to enter races. It's kind of a crazy idea, I know.😂All the best!
Thanks Eddie! Yes towards the afternoon in became a clear and sunny day which always makes for a better video haha! But the mud was definitely not ideal - or at least that much of it for that long. During short training runs 5-15mi muddy/flooded trails almost make it more fun splish-splashing along through the woods, haha!! I know I haven’t posted in a while but all the support on this video is really encouraging to get back out there and record/edit more. I’ve got some old raw footage of a few cool mountain hikes that I’ll spend some time with over the next week or two.
I also laughed when you mentioned the turn around point there. It was not marked last year. I got to the 11 mile aid station and someone was there asking where the 10 mile turn around was 😭😭
Yeah this section of the MST is too flat - it doesn’t drain well even though the lake is right there. It hadn’t rain for at least a day or two before this years race so I wasn’t expecting so much to still be flooded.

thank you for sharing this...I will be doing my 3rd 50K now at 68 years old...and will most likely be walking much of it :)
Thank you so much!! So glad to hear you’re doing so well and still getting after it! Which 50k do you have coming up?
Love the shirt, I enjoy mine. Solid work. I think I may have to try doing a 50k walk. Good video, watched to the end.

Man! You get all kinds of views. ❤ Who got the jackets?
Haha thanks! The jackets were available to anyone who wanted to buy them as an extra item!
Must have been nice to cross that bridge at mile 5😂😂 it was completely submerged the year I was there and I had to wade across 😭
That’s what I heard too! Sounds like quite the experience 😂! Was it as muddy then as this year too?
