I've been noticing this. All these older folks, just have more gumption and are less scared. I've been in a situation where an arsonist starting fires around my property and I had to put them out myself. The biggest one almost reached my home and i did what I could but had to stop because the flames were insanely hot, I was fortunate that the Fire Department did arrive in time. So I understand these people. It is so dangerous though. I live in LA btw. this happened to me two summers ago.

I’m in northeast Alabama and my grandfather planted two oaks in his backyard (1940s) which are now very large; I live in their house and they shade it from our hot summer sun. I was worried about them during our three month drought in 2016, but my brother told me they are “water hogs” they’ll survive when nothing else does; which might explain how their roots (which are huge) probably helped irrigate the land area around that couple’s house. Ingenious idea! I learned something new today- now I know why oaks are called Mighty Oaks because they are!

Never tell a woman it's something wong with her when she is stubborn. Since this lady is as stubborn as they only get. And in all likelihood this is how civilization progressed. It took a lot of stubborn ladies with their equally stubborn partners. And here were are. How come they did? Well, lots of luck, lots of thinking ahead, team work and lots of stubborness. Plants?, I'm not seeing much in the way of elaborate gardening.DROUGHT RESISTANT & NATIVE SPECIES OAK. Sparce, well placed, low growing succulents running the fenceline. A ring of Green grass in the front yard, -didn't catch fire, probably soaked with water, AND a good sized, well aireated- branched native oak tree in the middle of the grass. Succulents around the perimeter, with concrete edgeing, -with some kind of chain or metal link fence so they have a view. An excellent example of a well designed, water saveing, Drought resistant landscape. She is interested in the VIEW AROUND THE HOUSE, AND OF THE HOUSE. A Very beautiful home, much thought went into this- in the design for the view & shows character - of the maker. Definitely! it's not a coolie cutter house. Man That saved 8 houses with a garden hose.They didn't even have grass, weren't watering it, or it was just dirt. Fencing caught on fire. Put that out. Eves under the roofing caught on fire, put that out. Chopped out a burning spot, put that out. Embers flying quite a ways. Looters scoping out the 8 houses, for free Stuff.... Ran them off. What a Day! A Great Day to remember.

Yes, planting live oak trees down the hill from their house was an added bonus to keep the fires climbing uphill. This is “common sense”. Some people I read put in private fire hydrants which also helped save their homes. These people learned from the ‘78 fires and at their age, why not❤️

It seems obvious to me to evacuate but when you are so close to death already, I can see why it would make sense to try and save your life as you have it vs relying on help the rest of your life. Really incredible but I hope no one who didn't do this feels guilty or sad for not doing the same

This is the generation that learned reading, writing and arithmetic in school! Not politics and sex! They learned to read and use their brain and how to work hard! We are losing all.of those traits! The educational system we have now is not preparing children for hard times! They are being brainwashed and coddled! Kudos to those of my generation!

This. It wasn't just the hoses. They learned and prepared from the last one. People that had hoses and pumps to pull water from their pools saved their homes too. All the tools. It wasn't luck. They were prepared. They had hoses on both sides. Although it was a massive blessing they had water pressure. But if they had a pool and a pump that could work it you don't! Clothes to protect from burns, and masks to filter smoke would be wise additions also. But these people show us what being prepared can do. Still sometimes nature bulldozes all the preparation and does what it does. But the fact some were able to get through it with various preparation teaches a lot.
A lot of times you don’t need human made stuff to protect your home. Nature was first, and already adapted to these natural phenomena. Use nature and improve the earth’s health
Maybe there should be neighboorhood volunteer firefighters with hoses and pumps and gear stored near by. Seems like many folks saved their homes with buckets and garden hoses.
Pumps need electricity and electricity out. Anyone nuts enough to live in a canyon or the side of a mountain in fire country better have a generator and a rent a fireman on speed dial.
Their house is so beautiful. And so amazing that they were both tryin to save their house by extinguishing the fires themselves without knowing of the other doing the same thing. Thats nice.

So many of these stories coming out now. Prooves my point if you want to get something done right you got to do it yourself. So happy for them! ❤
Maybe there should be neighboorhood volunteer firefighters with hoses and pumps and gear stored near by. Seems like many folks saved their homes with buckets and garden hoses.
Pumps need electricity and electricity out. Anyone nuts enough to live in a canyon or the side of a mountain in fire country better have a generator and a rent a fireman on speed dial.
issue was there was no water, this couple was lucky and most likely had to deal with the fire early on before resources ran out

Their house is so beautiful. And so amazing that they were both tryin to save their house by extinguishing the fires themselves without knowing of the other doing the same thing. Thats nice.
