I moved out to go to trade school to be a welder and a wildland firefighter. The most terrifying experience so far was flying to the DIA, navigating the Denver International Airport all by myself, missing my flight, and having to book another flight to get to Rapid City. It is absolutely stressful and insane. The DIA is the closest thing to hell I've ever experienced. Im doing great at welding. Almost certified. I got deployed as an fft2 and have great friends. Even greening out on an edible is less terrifying than that. If I wasn't able to reschedule my flight, I would probably have to stay the night at the DIA and have security kick me out and then sleep on the streets. Like a homeless person. DIA=EVIL. Not only that the underground railway system that gets you to the 3 terminals is always insanely crowded and I had to force my way in or my head would be chopped off by the doors. So the moral of the story is to always navigate the DIA with a friend or family and never by yourself, and life isn't that terrifying if your able to navigate it. Also this is supposed to be taken light hearted. It's a joke.

You have yourself. If you move out, take on the world, and begin the adventure of your life you will become much more proud of yourself and grow tremendously. As a result, you'll start being your own friend. Once you're proud of yourself and shoulder some responsibility, you will attract others. You have the ability to venture out, find people, and build the life you want and need. It's within your reach, and there is hope. It's up to you to cease that opportunity. Hope this helps, and I sincerely wish you the best in your endeavor.

My dad used to tell me that you're not fully grown until you can turn your own key, in your own lock. That's a difficult reality; but the truth is whenever you are utilizing the resources of another person, you need them. Needing someone requires you to meet their expectations. It doesn't have to be a bad thing; but it is a real thing. Great video.

I'd say that one of the problems is that some parents cling on too heavily on traditional collectivist ideals (especially immigrant parents of colour), that they will discourage independence, insist that it's "selfish" to choose individual happiness over collective family obligation and that it's "evil" to have any freedom of bodily autonomy without your parents having the ability to punish you.

My siblings, who left much sooner; never stopped mooching and have moved back home several times with their families. Point is; it is best to leave when you are prepared to never be a burden to your parents again.

I’m the baby of a Jamaican family, single, with no kids. So when I decided to move out, I was automatically persuaded not to. Then when I decided to move back home after my rent increased, I become stagnant again. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful I have parents who are willing to let me stay for as long as I needed. I just turned 26 and I'm still living with my parents 😬. I feel exactly how you feel I feel like when I'm at my parents house somehow my mentality is stagnant because I'm so comfortable and there's a level of codependency too. It's like I can't fully develop into an adult mentally when there are people that I can fall back on. Secondly I'm a very sheltered person which was really beneficial early on because it protected me from the wiles of the world, but like you said it's a curse to because it almost feels like a form of arrested development when I just cant snap into adulthood in my mind, just like that. I can definitely pay bills and everything but while I'm at my parents house I don't have the driver's seat in my life and I still have to ask for permission for quite a few things. I'm pretty much still a child and I'm kind of treated like it too. My parents or even my sister don't really take me seriously. I know how you feel.

I shaped up, I went back to college, finished my bachelor's, paid off my student loans, got myself a really good job, and I have been at my job for 3 years now. I worked on my credit, it is nice and sparkly, saved up a good savings, and now I applied for a home loan and got a good deal on it. Closing date is one month from now ^^ I am nervous since I did this all by myself as a single woman, but I feel like it is the right time and also I want to build equity and invest in a good house. I have been having a lot of doubts on moving and my mother isnt too fond on the idea, but I know that I can do it and I know that in the end I will be proud of myself. Thank you for this video. You can save money, but also your mental health can decline easily if your parents are not so supportive of your goals. I can't never focus on my studies, self-study skills, and certification preparation due to the constant noise in my environment. Parents are also narcissists, so I endured mental abuse for a long time and now as an adult it is worse because they always bring up that I am adult still living for free and mentally abuse me due to having failed in my university and not getting a good-paying job afterwards which led me to stay at home. They had it easier than me because they bought their home a long time ago before inflation.

In my opinion in this video 'living with your parents' is confused with 'hotel mother'. In the 'hotel mother' parents never stop caring about you and do all the things you should do alone. 'Living with your parents' is just that you live in the same house but do all the things by yourself.
Eg. Asking to adjust the thermostat is never something I did. Doing the choirs they want you to do is nothing I was ever asked to do (except things my parents couldn't do anymore like heavy work in the garden or fixing the roof. I also could have said no there with no problem)

I moved out at 17 now 27 I’m moving back with my mom but before you judge. It’s the apartment above hers (3rd floor). In the 10 years I’ve lived away from my parents the biggest lesson I’ve learned is no one cares about you but why should they? They have their own lives to worry about. So with that being said I stopped caring so much about other people. I’m not saying to become an a-hole but I stopped going the extra mile for everyone & started doing it for myself. With that mindset I’ve accomplished so many goals & I don’t really fear challenges anymore. Put an obstacle in front of me & I’ll ram through it. Now I’m helping my gf develop that mindset & her life is literally changing right before our eyes.
Long story short- if you have fears don’t ignore them, figure out why you’re scared & prepare yourself.

I'm 15 years old, and I know it may seem a little early for me to be already looking and planning everything to move out of home but I really feel it's something necessary to get to know myself and grow as a person. My home is a mentally exhausting environment, not to mention highly dysfunctional and does not provide any of the comfort or security that a family environment should. A few years ago my dad told me what I am going to do with the rest of my life, where I am going to study, what I am going to study, where I will live, what I will work and what I will be in my future; every time he talked about it I ended up crying horribly because it is not what I want to do with my life and honestly as he painted it seemed like a real hell. Since that day I have been forced to prepare myself for such a blissful future, where what terrified me the most was that I never seemed to get away from them. In my country things are a little different, at 16 years old you have to take the entrance exams and at my early 17 years old I should already enter the university, from that moment the path of my life begins. The truth is that I don't know what I am doing and if I will be able to escape from that imposed future, but somehow watching these videos and reading the comments give me some comfort and hope that if I try hard enough to build my own life I will be able to guide myself in a more pleasant future for me.

I live in Pakistan, where most people live with their parents because usually we need to combine our income and productivity to survive. I don't get lectured at home. We work together and there is compromise but everyone's healthy and gives each other space. I am independent (i pay the bills and buy the food with my sibling 50-50) but sometimes I have to do my stuff+their stuff as well. Which is annoying because I only have 24 hours in a day. I was told that it's going to be amazing and awesome when I move out living on my own. I moved out a few months after I got a steady job. Nothing changed, except my living standards lowered since I had to use my salary to pay rent, bills etc. Now I'm 40, both my parents are dead. I'm still working in the same IT company. I've waited for 20 years for this "living on my own" thing to become amazing and awesome. Yet, it's still the same. Most of my time I'm at computer, otherwise I eat or sleep. Just like before moving out.

This. Everyone acts like moving out and becoming a "Rent-tard" is some grand moment in your life that will forever change you. It's not. You just lower your own quality of life and handicap yourself with more bills and financial stress. What's so glamorous about that? At least with my parents I can have savings and better standard of living...
Most cultures, families don't disband. It makes no sense to do that to them and yourself.

I do want to say that every situation is different. I grew up in a toxic house. My father left, was raised by a single mother and we were constantly on survival mode. When I got my first part job, I became man of the house and started helping with bills. My paycheck was exactly $144 every week and didn’t know anything about money/ my mom taught me how to budget but nothing about being a functioning adult In the real world. I didn’t have a bank account, I didn’t have credit card or a credit score, I didn’t know how to get a job and KEEP one, so when she decided to say “I want you out of my house” I had to rush and find any apartment regardless of the kind of roommate I’d be living with.
I understand parents don’t want to live with their kids forever (kids don’t want to either) but parents should also build their kids up for success and teach them how to be independent

Worst advice ever. You should only move out if you're starting your own family. Otherwise you're just shooting yourself in the foot and paying 2/3 of your income to some landlords mortgage, effectively you're been financially dominated and burning your hard-earned money.

As of now it’s my first night and I begin working tomorrow. I’m hoping I’ll settle in and have fun either way and hopefully make some new friends even though I struggle with that and that is probably what causes the most anxiety to be alone for 5months.

Your older brother is smart. He is probably squirreling money away for a deposit instead of becoming a rent cuck. Renting is equivalent to burning your money. At least a mortgage is a capital investment into yourself. And it's not easy to rent and save for a deposit simultaneously.

I am 24 now and I graduated and never went back home... First thing first save some cash, get a place to pay your rent for a year or 6 months, keep some cash for feeding for at least 2 months, get a Job, don't spend recklessly save 80% of your money use 20% there's time for everything...
