- One man’s dream of the NHS.
From campaigning at the coalfield to leading the battle to create the NHS, Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan is often referred to as the politician with greatest influence on our country without ever being Prime Minister.
Confronted with death, Nye’s deepest memories lead him on a mind-bending journey back through his life; from childhood to mining underground, Parliament and fights with Churchill in an epic Welsh fantasia.
Michael Sheen (Under Milk Wood) is Nye Bevan in this surreal and spectacular journey through the life and legacy of the man who transformed Britain’s welfare state. It’s written by Tim Price (Teh Internet is Serious Business) and directed by Rufus Norris (Small Island).

Crowley, I found him. He's at the theater again
You have no idea how delighted this comment made me! 😁
@@erykaton170 I couldn't resist 🤓🤣🥰
Love this comment.
🤣
Crowley: “Oh goody. Tell him he can piss off!”
Micheal's ability to make his own personality vanish when he's playing a character is phenomenal
The greatest Briton of all time. I thank you posthumously, Nye, for every life you saved.
Absolutely love when Michael Sheen is just being a weird little guy
Is he ever not? 🤣 Love him
Well, 'lead with your strengths', right? 😆
That's a bit rude to Nye Bevan.
You show your ignorance of our shared history and of the visionary that Bevan was, who transformed conditions for all of us and to whom we all owe so much, with your contemptuous, juvenile comment. Grow up.
A Great Actor playing a Great Man.
Such a wonderful trailer and Michael you will always remain the king of micro expressions!
There should be statues honouring Nye Up and down the land.
A very good point. Why aren’t there if we love the NHS so much?
@@somecontrol268 the establishment won't put up statues when they'd much rather get rid of the NHS
There is one in Cardiff
Well done Cardiff. A statue worth having!
MICHAEL! I wish I could see this! He’s phenomenal!
It’s showing at a lot of cinemas around the UK on the 23rd of April 😊 good for those who can’t feasibly make a trip to London to watch it!
It felt like I was watching a clip of Mr Bevan himself for a moment! I can't wait for this.
He has his speech patterns and mannerisms down pat!
he's BACK and he's WEIRD AGAIN
YESSSS! Love how you can do Nye's mannerisms even when confined to a bed. 😊See you on the big screen in late May, Michael! SO excited!
What a triumph to mark NTLive 100.
I sincerely hope it goes to wider platforms. It deserves to be seen by as many British voters as possible; in fact, that’d be a vital public service. ❤ @National Theatre
Michael Sheen at his finest 👏👏👏so looking forward to seeing Nye in March ❤💙
I'm seeing him in May at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. Can't wait!
Absolutely dazzling. Sheen never disappoints in his ability to articulate nuances of human depth; and it always comes with charisma and twinkles in his eyes. More importantly, how the play strings so many facets of Nye’s life story together was absolutely ingenious. Such an important story told right.

Great trailer, I’m already hooked! 🔥 See you in March Mr. Sheen 💙
He changed his accent AGAIN he is a genius he is a freaking genius aaagghaghhaghhghg how can one can be so cute and adorable and talented and handsome and everything???!! It's a national shame that I can not watch this great remarkable watch this theatre

@@marknewbold2583 Oh my dear I ain't knew that😂

@@itskitkat1212 no he has diffrenct accent. And voice tone. Ofc i know he's welsh
You can watch it at the cinema.
Saw Nye last night. Absolutely phenomenal❤️
Gotta love Mr Sheen
This man is phenomenal, I cannot wait to see it!
Saw this last night, and it was brilliant. Would love to seem them make some sort of film adaptation, Nye Bevan's life should be celebrated far more.
OK, first off, like most of us here, I'm a Micheal Sheen fan. I hope this play does well for his sake.
Next thing: I hope that the play one day comes out on video. National Health /Socialized Medicine is a controversial subject here in the US and while it is easy to read the facts and statistics, you oftentimes have to go the arts to see the actual impact of this or that policy. It would be interesting to see how Britons see this landmark event in their post-War Two history.
I don't imagine there are many of us in the UK that appreciate it as much as we should. The history isn't taught in our schools, most of us grew up with it being the norm and there's been a deliberate campaign to try and destroy the health service for over a decade.
Frankly, most people in the UK would benefit from learning just how barbaric the country was less than a hundred years ago.
@@nathandts3401 EVERY country was 'barbaric' by 21st century standards in 1900. They call that 'progress' 😁
I'm a US Civil War reenactor [if the picture didn't give it away] and I've done a great deal of reading and teaching about life in 1800s. Comparatively speaking, it wasn't pretty. The cities were cesspools, but also the centers of money, power, and learning. Every industrialized nation had colonialism on its mind and pursued empire with a grim intent.
YET, the foundations of the rights we enjoy today were set in that era. Modern science, medicine, education, all these things owe their foundations to events in the 1850s and 60s.
Something else that a lot of Americans don't understand is just how wrenching and difficult Great Britain's retreat from Empire was for the country. In one lifetime the UK went from being the premier power on Earth to a tier 3 power beholden to the US. I honestly believe that the US wouldn't weather such a change of fortunes as well as the UK did.
@@carlhicksjr8401 Most of us Brits aren't aware of how bad things were, though. People think of workhouses and asylums as Victorian relics when we've only all broadly had any established rights for a hundred years.
Point is, most people are ignorant of how important the NHS was. Along with various other movements that occurred in the early 20th century.
Can’t actually wait.
La tristeza de saber que no lo voy a poder ver 😭
Michael es magnífico ✨
Still waiting to see if there will be any NT Live showings near me. I so hope so, this looks so good!!
Saw this. Absolutely brilliant performance.
I am looking forward to seeing this in March
Bevan, a immortal legend
Can't wait ❤
Looks really good 😊
CAN'T WAIT
Fantastic actor!
What a lovely man X
Oh we really need a theater in the Boston to show these screenings. Lot's of people in Boston.
❤❤❤I can't wait.❤❤❤
Looking forward to this coming to Oz in May.
What's the name of the music track that is playing in the background?
Going tonight to the Millenium Centre theatre here in Cardiff.
I really want this, but I don't want to have to go to the cinema to see it. Will it ever be available for streaming?
Can we have an date for when House of Bernarda Alba will be on NT at Home?
I hope the US gets universal health-care soon.
Brilliant! We must never let our NHS fall into the grasping hands of the oligarchs…NEVER!
Too late I’m afraid, it’s already 50% gone and will soon be almost completely run by private concerns . Only critical care will remain available to all .
BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL
oh wait
Greatest Welshman in history
This needs to be picked up by the Beeb or Channel 4
Imagine if we had such a vision to improve the country, based on need not profit, today.
❤❤❤❤❤
I'm from India(Kerala). I do some theatre here. I would like to join your productions as a perdomer. How can i apply?😊

This is my proposal:
Michael Sheen vs Simon Pegg.
Thunderdome.
Giant boxing gloves.
Thought they had made a movie about Bill Nye the science guy🙂
😊
I thought this was a bill nye documentary
I wish I could see this. Stupid pond! (In reference to being "across the pond") lol
This isn’t about Bill Nye the Science Guy….
Never understood this obsession British people have for their only public service.I Do they realise the majority of western country have similar health care systems and some of them are even better? I was lucky enough to live in different countries and really NHS does not seems that great when you can compare to proper health care system in more social countries
There's a speech by Harry Leslie Smith that exemplifies why people should be obsessed.
There are people alive today that remember what it was like before we established that public service and to hear them tell their stories, this country was a Dickensian hellhole.
We should be holding tighter.
NHS doesn’t seem that great because subsequent governments since thatcher have defunded the NHS however we love the NHS because it provides universal healthcare and well if we didn’t love our NHS it would of been privatised like everything else
It didn't used to be the only public service but Tory governments have privatised the others and those privatisations have been a failure. They have already privatised parts of the NHS by allowing private companies to compete for health contracts.
The police, army and fire service are also public ones as are some transport systems.
It was the first heath system in the western world that was free and universal, without the nhs you wouldn't have the others, there's lots to disparage but theirs also lots to be proud of.
Bevan's role is exaggerated to the point of comedy
For entertainment purposes I think.
An example of a great Socialist.
very controversial
Ah the cring.y Welshnat boyo Sheen, lately he has exposed his bigotry/xenophobia, shame really seems like a talented actor.
Whats wrong with playing nye bevan?
@@att6484 Nothing wrong with Nye (a hero to millions), just stating the truth about the cret.n playing him.
how has he exposed 'his bigotry and xenophobia'?
@@heliotropezzz333 Well unless you have been living under a rock, he has gone full nat/ret.rd/xenophobia/anglophobia these past few yrs.
@@mktf5582 I've not heard him say anything anglophobic. Pride in Wales does not amount to that, nor does opposition to the Tories or a relating of Welsh history.
NHS is not fit for purpose.
Today's NHS is not what he envisioned back in 1948.
Only because of mismanagement from the Tory Party. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that waiting times for major conditions and surgeries increased to stratospheric levels when they took charge.
Well that's the fault of Tory governments who have done everything they can to undermine it but its saved my life more than once.
Makes Bevan seem evil or demented
A country burdened with an aged population, mass immigration, and economic stagnation cannot sustain a National Health Service. The NHS is sadly outdated in today's Britain.
Is that really the case or is it just mismanagement from the Tory party. I don’t think it’s just a coincidence that waiting times for major surgeries and conditions increased to stratospheric levels when they got their paws on it.
Well you could use that argument and just change the last few words to say cannot sustain a National Police Force or any other government provided service. Would you prefer some kind of Logans Run scenario where once people reach retirement age they are euthanized en-masse? Lastly why do you think an NHS is unsustainable today but was sustainable in the aftermath of WW2 when 6% of the adult male population was dead and cities were in ruins? Why don't you say your real reasons or pop back to GBEEBIES where you're among friends?
It absolutely can lol
That's for the British people to decide, and governments know its popularity is such that it would be political suicide to privatise it. Nevertheless Tory government have a good go at deliberately undermining it as much as they can.
