How to Turn a Tree Yelper Turkey Call

- This is one of the most requested subjects I get for videos. The reason there is so little information on how to make these and trumpets is because of the amount of work each call maker puts into finding their sound. This can take years at times and no one is going to give away their secrets. This video shows you the basics of yelper making from there you can change what you like to get your sound.

It was nice meeting you today at the Outpost Armory. Thank you for taking the time to talk to me and explain multiple things.
Good meeting you. Thank you for taking the time to try and help me find those parts. You have my number now.
I thank you for doing this video. I turned 2 of them with your supplied info. They actually sounded pretty good. First yelpers I had ever made.
That's cool. I'm going to try making one. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching and the comment. They are fun to make once you get the steps figured out.
How do you blow these???
@@woodguy1962 I get this question a lot. You actually suck on these like a straw, they are called suction calls. They also take a bunch of practice but once you get it down they make great sounds turkeys aren't used to hearing.
Thank you. Awesome video and I hope youre ok man. Very sad to hear a good person struggling.
Thanks Matt. Yeah it is really tough right now. I get physically sick just thinking of going outside. PTSD sucks.
Thanks for watching and the comment and just checking in. Hope everyone is doing great.
DUDE IM SO SO SORRY LOST MY DAD BECAUSE OF THAT I JUST DONT KNOW WHAT TO SAY MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
Thanks buddy. Treatments are working but still a long way to go. Sorry about your Dad lost mine a few years ago. Some of the toughest parts is pretty much going through this by myself no family really.
my dad didnt want treatments if you want to talk just let me know
Have you ever made an all acrylic yelper or trumpet? I live in the Pacific Northwest, which is perpetually wet and have been interested in getting into this style of calling. But waterproof or durable calls are a must out here...Very informative video!
Sure have I have a few sitting here right now. The trumpets are a bit of a pain to turn but the yelpers are just like wood. The biggest difference is the finish and how long it takes me. Some guys can do it much faster.
I couldn’t find you on Etsy, but I saw some of your work on FB. You make some beautiful calls.
@@westernwanderer977 on Etsy it is Board Toad but if you found FG Game Calls on Facebook you can contact me there with a pm. I don't have everything on Etsy but I am always happy to send pics of what I have available or turn a custom call for you.
I heard you make a reference to trumpets. What is the basic difference between the two? Thanks for the video.
Sorry for the delay in answering UA-cam doesn't always notify me. The length and internals are different in both. Trumpets are more complicated and take a long time to find what works for you. My trumpets take 4 different drill bits instead of the 2 here.
Do you have a video on how to make a trumpet ? And also, I couldn't find your Facebook group to order a yelper....
Thanks for watching. It is FG Game Calls on Facebook. It might take me a couple of days to get pictures I'm really sick right now but I have quite a few yelpers. There are several reasons people don't make trumpet how to videos the main reason being they take a lot of work to get the sound right and people don't want to give away secrets. The other reason I can't make one is I can't stand up to turn and haven't for months, cancer sucks.
Thanks again for subscribing and watching and hit me up on Facebook and I'll get you pics asap.
What wood did you use for your mouth piece?
I use African blackwood or Gaboon ebony. This one is ABW. Thanks for watching and the comment.
What's the functional difference between a yelper and a trumpet?
Hi Walter, the yelper is easier to use but doesn't have the range of calls a trumpet does. Internally they are very different so the yelper is quieter and mostly used for closer in birds. It's very good at the calls they do on roost so they got the tree yelper name. Someone good on a trumpet can make an amazing array of calls with more volume. Thank you for watching, the comment and subscribing.
What type of wood is good for these ?
Hey Matt, just about anything. If it works for a pot call it works for yelpers and trumpets. I like harder woods just to be sure it doesn't break.
i hope you revisit this project because of lost footage please
Thanks for watching and the comment. Honestly what was lost really isn't important since it was only turning the outside shape which is up to you. The internal parts are important the outside is whatever you want it to be.
@@FollowingGhost THANK YOU
love the video !!!!!!!!are you going to make a video on making a trumpet ????????????????please make one!
Thanks for watching and the comment. If I get to the point I can make the video I will. I won't give away all my dimensions since it took me a long time to get them right. But you will have enough to make a call then adjust it to your sound. Right now I'm fighting cancer so not sure when I will be able to get one done have to take each day at a time.
