How to build a Turkey call ( Box Call )

  • The I've been making butternut boat paddle turkey calls since 1988 and now after over 200 calls, I have it dialed in. I explain the wood and show how I cut, sand and shap it. It's handcrafted so each call is a little different. Out of 10 calls I'll have 2-4 really good ones, then I'll have 2-4 calls that are 0k but not the very best, then I'll have a couple real horrible sounding ones which I'll throw away. My success ratio is slowly improving !

I’m not a turkey hunter, I did hunt deer years ago and I didn’t think I would like the video- how ever it was fascinating to watch you and learn about a box call. Thank you very much!!!

Mr. Martin. I've been watching you fish and hunt on tv since I was a kid My dad didn't hunt but was a hell of a fisherman. I was raised to fish and never pass on a chance to wet a line. You're the reason I started hunting and have been an avid hunter for 20 yrs. Now I'm teaching my kids both hunting and fishing. My son and I are headed to Louisiana for the first week of turkey season and do some fishing for crappie or white perch as they call them in LA . Thank you for this video. You've given us another hobby we can share. We didn't watch a lot of TV growing up. But we never missed the fishing programs. You are an excellent role model for today's lost generation who should be mentored by someone like you rather than Spongebob. Thank you sir!

Awesome Roland! I have watched your fishing shows since they were on PBS on Sunday afternoons when I was a kid. I admire your talents and no thrills approach to teaching all of us UA-camrs. You have accomplished much and should be very proud.

Hey Roland. I'm a wood worker in West Virginia. I use an Amish source for all my wood up in Ohio. Keim Lumber can get you all the Butternut you need if you're having problems getting it down there. Butternut works well with Walnut because the species are very closely related...some people call it "White Walnut". ALSO, if you need someone to make some for you, I can certainly make calls for you and you could STILL SAY they were made by "Roland"...lol.

Hopefully by February I can order.
His directions for sending your order was in his last video, I think email, he's got a website too but I haven't looked there yet.
