- As the world enters a new year, the war in Ukraine also grinds into another year.
Many Russians are still willing to believe the Kremlin’s narrative that the West is to blame for the war - but what are their thoughts on the future?
The BBC's Russia editor Steve Rosenberg, one of the few remaining Western journalists in the country, reports.

No, a handful of people can't represent an entire country but when is the last time that you saw a news report
that included interviews with 5,000 people carefully selected to get a balanced view of a situation?
No matter what the news story there are always only a handful of people interviewed
because logistically a reporter can't include interviews with hundreds or thousands of people
in a news story.
And obviously foreign reporters are very constrained doing news stories in Russia now.
It's a very dangerous activity to be involved in.

Many old Russian people don't have hopes or don't think about future. The reason is not only in present country situation, it's part of mentality. The sanctions have not reduced Russia's ability to sell oil and gas. The oil is now being bought by India and China, demonstrating what these countries think of the need to sanction Russia as a response to an illegal invasion. @@fjslfhalfhkdjfh buying enough eggs to have two a day for breakfast costs only 2.93% of that pension a month. Meaning total cost of food is around 10-15% of the allotted 150 pounds.

67.33 million people in UK will probably disagree with you on that.
@TonyM540. It may only be the 17.4 million that voted against their own interests, who may disagree with me (it may be lesser, considering that 60% now regret voting the way they did in 2016). 50 million agree with me! Instead of blabbering unsubstantiated fluff, take a walk by your town or city to understand the true scale of poverty, homelessness, inflation, and deprivation in UK!
So much for sanctions. The shelves of the Russian supermarket look better stocked than those here in the UK! We've also suffered massive levels of inflation, while simultaneously giant corporations post record profits and the rich keep getting richer.

So he can be a fascist and accuse others of fascism without realizing his condition. This is exactly how they attacked Ukraine, sneakily rob, destroy, kill people and at the same time accuse Ukrainians of Nazism and fascism, terrorism... This is a vivid manifestation of the real Russia as they are - nothing holy, no shame, no conscience, not responsible for anything his actions... This does not cause hatred, only disgust and contempt for Russians.
they could be talking for themselves, not for the government.
@@____________________ok he could mean that yes. But in that case he might say something more straightforward.
"But it wasn''t us who started it" ERRMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Russia did start the war but only because Ukraine broke the Minsk Agreement and has been bombing Russian civilians in Donbass since 2014, pre-2014 the government of Ukraine was corrupt but neutral and willing to cooperate with both Russia and NATO, much like Yugoslavia, after the Maiden Coup (backed by Western countries) which installed a corrupt pro-West government however Ukraine became NATO's puppet and aggressively anti-Russian, very often were Russians discriminated against.
You don't see the bigger picture and until people of the NATO countries realize that the West is at fault this war will continue, had Ukraine remained neutral then the war wouldn't have happened.
Go and learn facts before 2022.

There are no Nazis in Ukraine. Your government is lying to you, using your patriotism and WW2 glory to bolster your support for an unjust war. The real reason your country is invading Ukraine is because Putin does not want to lose Ukraine as a puppet state.
Yeah, but your government isn't too keen on going forward with the war.. right? And what about the 'new territories'? I don't see much going on around for two years lol!
@@williet.3058 Neither the people nor the government are interested in war. It would be better if there was no war. Unfortunately, during eight years of civil war
in Ukraine, no one listened to Russia. I'm talking about the agreements signed in Minsk. According to intelligence data, Ukraine was preparing a major offensive against Lugansk, Donetsk and Crimea. Russia launched a preemptive strike by launching Operation Z. The goals of Operation Z were to minimize casualties of personnel and civilians, demilitarize and rid Ukraine of Nazism. Haste in war leads to unjustified losses. The first months of the war showed this.

its funny cuz in the UK the pensioners also have a shit pension that does not compete with the cost of living. So its nice to see another country that lives like us in the UK.

The world should maybe stop buying British products of lo quality.
I am happy for you that you can at least read and write.
The economic situation of the UK is not great but you are still magnitudes richer than the average Russian. Most Russians are not living a modern life in Moscow or St. Petersburg. 35 million Russians dont have indoor plumbing, 29 million dont have any running water and 22 million dont even have central heating. (According to Rosstat)
That is not just in UK, that is everywhere like that, old age poverty exists but in Russia is extreme considering the wealth of the country due to their natural resources. No old person in the UK has to go outside in the cold to take a shit, well like 60% of russians in the rural area do.
Go live in Russia on £150 a month and see where you’d live and the food you could afford eat.
