  • As the world enters a new year, the war in Ukraine also grinds into another year.
Many Russians are still willing to believe the Kremlin’s narrative that the West is to blame for the war - but what are their thoughts on the future?
The BBC's Russia editor Steve Rosenberg, one of the few remaining Western journalists in the country, reports.

American has had its soldiers at war for the better half of this century. We don’t see this type of reporting from the BBC about that. Subtle propaganda; he managed to find only people who opposed the war… In every country there are people who are pro and anti war….

No, a handful of people can't represent an entire country but when is the last time that you saw a news report
that included interviews with 5,000 people carefully selected to get a balanced view of a situation?
No matter what the news story there are always only a handful of people interviewed
because logistically a reporter can't include interviews with hundreds or thousands of people
      in a news story.
And obviously foreign reporters are very constrained doing news stories in Russia now.
It's a very dangerous activity to be involved in.

Many old Russian people don't have hopes or don't think about future. The reason is not only in present country situation, it's part of mentality. Parents of these generation lived in Stalin's period: they didn't know - they will die or not tomorrow, they just lived in present day, they didn't have hopes and dreams (we have many aphorisms against hopes, opinions and dreams). This worldview was passed on to children.

The oil is now being bought by India and China, demonstrating what these countries think of the need to sanction Russia as a response to an illegal invasion. If it is not possible to blockade the export of oil and gas from Russia, then sanctions with the intention of depriving Russia of revenue to finance the war are pointless. Few specific people interviewed, happy people are ignored, unhappy and worried are prioritized, old women who don't look well off, a guy who's fishing in winter. The guy happily running is barely seen for a second in the background, a guy who looks sad on ice is focused on. Ads for military service are focused on, but not in proportion to how prominent they actually are. No broad coverage of social groups and opinions. Out of the ordinary price increases on eggs and tomatoes are stated, but the averages for the rest of food aren't. The actual effects on GDP PPP per capita aren't mentioned. With tragic music to complete the same negative narrative.
To put it simply, this is an example of propaganda. And the fact that it's delivered by a soft spoken man who looks caring and trustworthy is just another part of making it convincing

Russia did start the war but only because Ukraine broke the Minsk Agreement and has been bombing Russian civilians in Donbass since 2014, pre-2014 the government of Ukraine was corrupt but neutral and willing to cooperate with both Russia and NATO, much like Yugoslavia, after the Maiden Coup (backed by Western countries) which installed a corrupt pro-West government however Ukraine became NATO's puppet and aggressively anti-Russian, very often were Russians discriminated against.
You don't see the bigger picture and until people of the NATO countries realize that the West is at fault this war will continue, had Ukraine remained neutral then the war wouldn't have happened.
