I remember exactly where I was when my mom told me JPS had died. Being from Finland, he was big enough of a celebrity here to be reported in about in papers. I was 12 years old. He was my hero. Hell, he still is.
I was gutted when I found out he died. It was before I was born, but I loved watching strongman as a kid and when I turned 24 I started getting back into it and thought I'd watch all the wsm comps. He quickly became my favourite athlete. Then I binged the comps and found out he died when I wanted to see what he was up to nowadays and I was gutted. Didn't even exist at the same time as him and it hurt to find out almost three decades ago he died so young. I can't even imagine how hard it would've been for those that knew him personally. He seemed like such a great guy
unfortunately i can only give one thumbs up - JPS was my personal hero - he was the reason for me starting lifting at all - I have seen live when I was 13 I was fascinated by him. he was such an icon, a true legend and... most probably one the biggest reasons why back than media reports did jump on the strongman band wagon. he definetly died way too soon
3:45 I could hardly recognise JPS, his face looked so gaunt and ill. I too couldn’t believe he’d died so young. He was a true one of a kind and this brought back the sadness of hearing of his death. Brilliant video.
I often tell my peers about Jon Páll (I mean his name alone is price worthy) but noone ist even slightly interested in strength sport around me, which is a bummer and I sit here watching this small documentary having goosebumps. What a character. I am 35 today he went far too soon.
Jon Pall was so good for the sport. He ran his mouth during comps but he did it for entertainment, behind it all he always seemed to have great respect for his opposition. Also Capes doesn't nearly get enough credit (i guess he does in England) as an early great and pioneer of the sport.
Awesome video, Jón Páll Sigmarsson was always my favourite growing up as a little kid, screaming, "I am the Viking!" it was brilliant. You just know if he was born 1000 years ago he'd be that crazy Viking that myths were made from!
As an Icelander who used to train at Jón Páls gym, thank you for this biography. He was simply larger than life and thought us more than we can imagine. My ex girlfriend had talked to him just minutes before he died and watched people try to do CPR on him, but his heart was too far along and giving CPR to such a thick man is no easy feat. He was a pioneer in strongman like Arnold was in bodybuilding. His memory lives on !
As he says, around 14 minutes - this was pretty much a state funeral. We all loved him. I was a kid at the time, but we all looked up to him. He had everything, the charisma, the good looks, the strength, loving and tender with friends and family.
Brilliant tribute to Jón Pál Sigmarsson who, in my opinion is the greatest strong man of all time! Died doing what he loves, and he was right, "There's no reason to be alive, if you can't do Deadlifts!" RIP 🙏 💪
I was shocked to learn of Jon Pall's death back when I was watching all the old WSM competitions on UA-cam. I was like where's Jon Pall? Did a Google search and learned of his passing. A true legend of the sport.
I did a spreadsheet and worked out the most dominant WSM competitors ever - JPS ranks 5th best ever. That's only below Shaw, Big Z, Pudz and Thor. That's some achievement!
@@kermitthefragg I could probably re-jig it so that any win trumps not winning and the more wins the higher place, but then we'd just be looking at the same table we already know about
Did you account for Big Z being abscent for 3 yrs (at least) where he would easily have beaten Pudz? There was those (iirc) 2004-2008 years where Big Z competed in the "wrong federation" and his 3 WSMs there didn't count cause that federation lost out to WSM. But he would 100% have smashed Pudz during 2 or 3 of Pudzs wins and have had 6-7 WSMs to go with his 8 Arnolds today. It is a bit sad and the biggest "what if" story of Strongman history today ... But Big Z's 4 official titles does not do the man any justice.
@barath4545 Totally agree. This was purely based on wsm stats. I did do a combine with Arnold's and he wins by a landslide. Basically 10 finalists each year get 10 points to 1 point depending on their position, add it all up. Basic but gives a rough guide to "who's the best wsm competitor ever?"
This channel keeps upping its game, it gladdens an old Strongman fan that you exist and keep making these videos. I'm just about old enough to remember Sigmarsson (born '84) - he made an impact on a young boy, and really brought the sport some much needed flair and entertainment.
Loved watching this back in the day, when Capes, Sigmarsson and Kazmaier were competing against each other. Truly three of the greats of the strongman competition. RIP JPS and Geoff Capes.
Thank you for posting this video. Jon Pall will live on in the hearts of the fans and strength athletes until the end of time. So many great lifts and rivalries. Watching this really brought me back to which I consider the golden era of strong man.
I'm so sorry that I can only give 111/10 score. Good job, guys.👊 I'm sure most of us would love to leave this place doing what we love the most, but at the early age of 32... 💔 Without question the best strongman content on UA-cam.
This was an amazing video Loz and Liz👏👏. Always love them but this was a step up. When I first started watching WSM I loved it because of the battles between Jon Paul and Capes. Both legends. Thanks
As a wi American lad of course I followed kaz at the time. But then here come this as so many of you rightly said larger than life character. I was an absolute fan. I miss hearing him call for the viking power! Cool video loz as always appreciate the upload...
Large ascending aorta: systolic pressure during heavy weight lifting can rise from a normal reading of 120 to highs of 280 and even 300. “If your aorta is weak due to your genetics and if it is mildly enlarged, weight lifting might be what puts you over the brink,”.... research indicates that retired NFL athletes are more likely to have enlarged aortas than people in the general population. .... Researchers report 4 cases of ascending aortic dissection in patients with long histories of weight lifting. In 2 of the patients, the initial symptoms of dissection developed. So if you weight lift go check out your heart with a cardiologist.
And what let them tell you to not lift weights? Look, JPS died young, but he at least got to die while doing what he loved doing. Plus he lived a whole lot during that time he was alive. Most of us will never be so lucky even if we live to be 100.
Not just that, he was lifting unnaturally heavy weights thanks to PEDs. Bicep tears and pec tears typically happen to steroid users, not natural lifters.
I’m 60 and have a 46 mm aortic root my cardiologist believes was due to th weights I did in my 20s and 30s- LOTS of high rep high weight squats and everything else- not sure about genetics but no steroids, no smoking and I do have high blood pressure. It’s very true the valsalva of lifting does damage- I’m more into cardio now and breathe through weights
Thanks Loz, this is the best telling of JPS story I have seen. I've always felt Kaz was the greatest ever but I have been questioning that lately with JPS achievements.
He really was one of the true greats of strongman - everyone loved him, his personality and character oozed off the screen. He was the highlight of our traditional family viewing of strongman. I think my mum always fancied him. Rest in peace, there are few people in the world as awesome as JPS.
An absolute icon in strongman, taken from us far too young. We need personalities in strongman to grow the sport and he was the perfect example of this, combined with immense talent.
To me, he was the greatest strong man to ever walk the planet or ever will in my opinion he was my inspiration even to this day I wish I could’ve known him. Rest in peace JPS
Love this!!! Thank you! Maybe one day do a video on the correct spelling😂 and history of certain events like axle, yoke, and Fingal’s finger (Fingal’s Cave)?
I knew JP through Brian down at Quayside gym in the 80s. Never forget the stories he told us about the sheer number of whole chickens and eggs he ate per day. Him and OD Wilson, Kaz too. Great days.
Thank you for this tribute Big Loz, He was a superstar of the sport, Great big personality, RIP JPS

Yep I switched to power lifting from bodybuilding after seeing Jon Pall just the power I was amazed

I disagree - because I cannot deadlift, and I do not want to die. 👎👎👎👎

Liz and Loz, this might be the best video you've ever made. I'm a bit emotional. Amazing work.

I knew only bits and pieces. Thanks so much for the eye opener Big Loz and Lizz!
He was such a character. Sad Loss.
So tragic he died so young, crazy I was barely an infant when he passed. Such a legend, I always enjoyed watching the vintage competions with him.
Always enjoyed watching him for me he really brought strongman events into the public eye more than anyone. Bless him
I did a spreadsheet and worked out the most dominant WSM competitors ever - JPS ranks 5th best ever. That's only below Shaw, Big Z, Pudz and Thor. That's some achievement!
Your spreadsheet told you a guy that won WSM 4 times is less dominant than a guy who won once?
Seems reasonable.
@kermitthefragg Yes, because it's based on placing and consistency. Not saying it's the most accurate thing in the world, just a bit of fun.

Great job guys! Loved it.
A few legends of strength sports in this video that are no longer with us, Jón páll, Douglas Edmunds and David Webster. Quite an emotional watch
Douglas was so upset when Jón Páll died that he nearly quit the Strongman sport completely. Nice to see him and David in the video. Emotional indeed.
Love this 🙏 my first recollection of watching WSM as a kid was him shouting The King Has Lost His Crown in 1984 getting his first title 🏆🏆🏆🏆
