I'm a hardcore All Black fan and I remember when the Boks toured NZ in 1981, as teenagers we were in awe of 2 players Danie Gerber and Ray Mort. Incredibily powerful players and Gerber only had to touch the ball and something would happen. An amazing player! Thanks for this, it was also wonderful to see Philippe Sela, this is an amazing video. Thank you Werner Frost for this video.
Never say never the old adage goes, but the world will never see another centre of the calibre of Danie Gerber!!! Pity that the international rugby world were denied the privilege of seeing a great man at work. To this day Danie is still as humble about his achievements as back in the days. Honestly a great personality. I salute you Danie.
Danie Gerber was pretty much the ideal midfield back. Fast, tough, creative, devastating on the counterattack. He would still be suitable in the modern power game too. Respect.
Best centre three-quarter to ever play test footy in my opinion. He was the player we were in awe of when the Boks came to NZ in '81. The Boks would've won that series if Naas Botha had converted Ray Mordt's third try from the touchline with time up at Eden Park, He narrowly missed so the ref played a few extra minutes to give both teams a chance at a result as it was locked at 22-all. You wouldn't get that generous gesture these days. Also saw Danie tear England apart for a President's XV at Twickenham in '84. The poor Poms must have been sick of the sight of him that year! Magnificent player!
Yeah, mate privileged to see him play at Lancaster Park as a 13 year old. The 3rd test Clive Norling asked both captains if they wanted to carry on playing for the full time off play, ie injury time and stoppages for flares, flower bombs etc. Both Dalton and Classsen agreed and thankfully for us it worked in our favour, eh
thefobbie a man that knows his rugby! If you want to see more of Danie, go check out my channel Real Rugby, there is a great tribute video of him. Enjoy!
Armies of Nickpah, ifs and buts dont count, the springboks lost, end of story. The extra time had nothing to do with getting a result,it was because of all the stoppages during the game caused by the anti-apartheid protesters.
Armies of Nickpah - Danie tore the POMS up for sure ... and then, along came Jonah and the POMS (especially) had "skid-marks" in their shorts before they even stepped on the field! HAR! HAR!
Ek het grootgeword in Suid-Afrika en onthou kyk Danie speel. Ek het 'n paar fantastiese herinneringe van sy spel. 'N groot ambassadeur vir die spel. Dankie Danie!
First I've ever heard of him but wow, even from this grainy footage, what a player. Power, pace, acceleration, devastating stepper. Blessed in every facet of the game. His balance looked outstanding, such a balanced runner and able to step off either foot. Such a pity he isn't around today as a young man, he would have the rugby world at his feet. And SA rugby could do with a talent like this, as an Englishman it's been a while since any of your backs have excited me like Gerber would. Last great SA back would be peak Bryan Habana. Perhaps Willie Le Roux, but not to the same extent.
The Boks backline of the mid to late 80s were the best combination any world team could have 15 Heunis complete player 14 Mordt strong powerful 13 Gerber classy and destructive 12 M du Plessis clever creative 11 C du Plessis most balanced runner 10 Botha match winner 9Serfontein swift ball to backs and best in box kicks
Incredible player, from your great rivals in the land of the long white cloud ;) Always loved your national anthem as well (whatever the political implications may be), beautiful.
Top class comment, bud - good on you. How I love watching the Boks and the Blacks...I grew up watching Danie Gerber and must say a travesty of things political that he never got more of a showing...
Danie Gerber was a Legend. I rate him top Springbok of all time and best centre in the World in his day. The Springboks had some other good centres too like John Gainsford and Mannetjies Roux. Wonderful to watch especially Danie.
Fantastic player! Unfortunately didn't see much of him up here in the northern hemisphere, but I remember well that game he played for the Rest of World (I think it was a 5 nations team against the rest, for the IRB centenary celebrations) and I was in awe with his quality as a player.
Yes indeed, along with Phillipe Sella with whom I think he linked up with once, for the Barbarians, the two best centres ever. Besides his obvious attributes as a player, key to his success was his phenomenal fitness levels.
Clem Davies,Bruce Robertson was regarded as the king of centres but in modern times Brian ODriscoll but what about Mike Gibson also but i cant remember if he was 12 or 13.
Mmm think you passed away a while ago. Great player. Lou Pawai and Jimmy Mill also could not go on that tour, Are you a relative of the great man? Have a photo of him with my grandfather a 1921/22 All Black.
George Nepia, thats why the victories by SA in SA will always be tarnished and not taken seriously for that very reason. They never got the full measure.
Danie Gerber my favourite Springbok. Try scoring machine.Saying is best centre is very subjective. Sella was great centre too. Bruce Robertson was great centre as well. Robertson set up his winger for some great tries. He could kick with both feet,he had beautiful pass on him, great centring kick, He was fastest All black at the time. Gerber,Sella,Robertson all great players.
I see how attacking the springbok team of those days played. Definitely not the case today. Why is that? I thought the perception is that SA always played conservatively.
Gerber is a bit off the mark there, that S.A. team of the mid 80s could have been the best in the world never mind just Springboks. SA rugby just hasnt produced a team quite of that caliber since then. Time will tell if 2019 continues.
Nee hy was op die regte tyd. Danie was net vêr bo die ander. Kom n game op eenige tyd draai ,as hy n bal kry. Hy was en is net so ongelooflik goed op sy tyd.
After all these years, I still believe that Danie Gerber was the best centre who ever played the game of rugby.

Wish SA could produce 2players of that caliber again. Danie and Ray, wow...

@@MrRealrugby what u are real rugby🤔😯😀.
Danie Gerber was world-class. Awesome player, humble person. Hero!
The Boks backline of the mid to late 80s were the best combination any world team could have
15 Heunis complete player
14 Mordt strong powerful
13 Gerber classy and destructive

They're simply the best, these are the greatest, you just don't get any better.
Jy's n Legend Danie.

Here, have an upvote :-) Our anthem used to be awesome. The new one is hard on the ears.
that anthem was not Danie's anthem, it was a Caffir prayer to a god that does not exist, nothing to do with Europeans in Africa.
Tks for sharing, I would have loved to have seen more of Danie Gerber in action but this is fab.
It can be argued that Danny Gerber is the greatest Centre to ever play the game of rugby union.
Danie Gerber was a Legend. I rate him top Springbok of all time and best centre in the World in his day. The Springboks had some other good centres too like John Gainsford and Mannetjies Roux. Wonderful to watch especially Danie.

think there is a video on youtube of that game. one of them vs Gloucester?? he scored 4 tries.
MiguelSF
I think the game you refer to was a Northern Hemisphere vs Southern Hemisphere festival match... Can you remember the year?
Great doco of an amazing springbok. Pity the weird music.
Danie Gerber is actually my second cousin and I'm so proud! He is my mother, Pamela Gerber's cousin! I would love to meet him irl.
Danie daar van DESPATCH his our HERO in every MATCH.
best centre eva loved to have seen how he would have gone in the modern era
Yes indeed, along with Phillipe Sella with whom I think he linked up with once, for the Barbarians, the two best centres ever. Besides his obvious attributes as a player, key to his success was his phenomenal fitness levels.
Agreed. 2 best centres I ever saw
Clem Davies,Bruce Robertson was regarded as the king of centres but in modern times Brian ODriscoll but what about Mike Gibson also but i cant remember if he was 12 or 13.
Danie Gerber, by far the worlds best centre ever. Amazing player!
Nice vid, whata player he was. Coming from a kiwi.
The best centre ever. No question. Brian O'Driscol I think is a distant second and then all the rest of the great centres to play the game.
And yet Toetie and the other coaches keep saying how we never played running rugby, these were the days when our side was one of the true greats.
Huge respect
Best ever centre maybe best ever rugby player
Yes I do. I am sitting with quite an archive which is growing every week. I'll post some more vids in the weeks to come. Thanks for watching.
Wow, kyk hoe baie mense ondersteun die klub wedstryd! Wonderlik!
The Best!!..
Haha, ".....and there will never be a another Danie Gerber." And the best is still to come!! #mybloedisgroen
It's a shame the wider world didn't see how good he was
andrew097,there own fault.
I wish i was allowed to play in South Africa.
This was rugby. Not this boring game we see today.
Danie Gerber made wingers look like props.
dangerous player for anyone to face....in any era
Hi Johan. This video is unfortunately not available commercially. I'll post more videos on this channel.
I totally agree.
Danie Gerber my favourite Springbok.

Bruce Robertson was great centre as well.
Robertson set up his winger for some great tries.
He could kick with both feet,he had beautiful pass on him, great centring kick,
He was fastest All black at the time.
Gerber,Sella,Robertson all great players.
Geez watching this vid made me think, if S.A were in the 87 world cup they might have won it. .... Coming from a kiwi.
Henzary,we had an awesome team then,SA wouldve struggled to beat that team especially in NZ.
I see how attacking the springbok team of those days played. Definitely not the case today. Why is that? I thought the perception is that SA always played conservatively.
jeez what happened to the springboks running rugby over the years ...all they seem to do nowadays is kick kick kick...
1234breakdancer,theyve always been predominantly a forward oriented side.
Apartheid did not just leave physical victims behind it seems. Would really have wanted to see Danie and that 80's Springboks against the "big" teams.
We beat them in `81. Also he played against France, Ireland, England and the Lions I think.
I think he played in about 19 tests in 16yr career. actually sad, did not get 1$. they all worked full time jobs 8-5.
He ran, and had legs to spare.....
Is it only my sound that is lacking?
They need to find another Gerber
He cculd have made millions in NFL..
Gonzoidzz,so couldve Lomu but rugby players are too good and tough for that boring pussies game.
Back when the springboks ran the ball instead of kicking and kicking and
Met lekker boeremusiek.
Why spoil a perfect video with that tribal throat cancer song?
Gerber is a bit off the mark there, that S.A. team of the mid 80s could have been the best in the world never mind just Springboks.
SA rugby just hasnt produced a team quite of that caliber since then.
Time will tell if 2019 continues.
Can't they turn off the fucking awful music!! I mean let's hear the legends talk
Philippe Sella is the only centre I've ever seen better than him.
No.
