In NZ we loved this guy apart from when he played our sides. He was incredibly dangerous and you always felt he could pull a rabbit out of the hat at any time. But a pure joy to watch.
What a player. We were lucky to have our own ace in Cullen but huge amount of respect for Joubert in NZ. One of the most sublimely talented players I’ve ever seen.
Three best fullbacks ever and not in sequence of preference each players have their own attributes, here we go! Andre Joubert Christian Cullen and JPR Williams. Not negotiable this is cast in stone😅
I played sevens against him in Singapore in 1993, I think he was playing for the Durban harlequins, I was playing for Happy Valley. Opposite number, I didn’t have a chance. His accélération over the first five meters was unreal.
Ryan Phillip Nel absolutely. Phenomenal balance. My dad used to talk about players having great balance. I asked him what he meant. He said “watch Andre Joubert”.
Always a complete gentleman on the field. Cleanest of players. Always struck me as an introvert, but a marvellous fullback . Very very quick..deceptively fast.
Yes, I got a sense by the time he played us regularly in the 90's he wasn't quite as quick as he had been, which is pretty scary, as he could still go at a fair clip. He was just a master of his craft, cunning, deceptive, skillful as all hell.
Joubaaaaa! How many fans just loved to emit that primal scream. The most gifted full back of all time. Always seemed to be in the right place. He could smoke most wingers at a canter.
I'm of a younger generation and Joubert was a class act - managed to see some of him as a child. My personal favourites are Juan Smith and Schalk Burger (JNR). Smith in particular was a phenomenal player whom I think was vastly underrated by the press, but I believe his peers absolutely took note of him.
My 1st experience of watching South African rugby was Natal v.s. then Western Samoa in good old super 10. From that day he has been my most favorite fullback, and will be, until my last day. Of course there are many excellent fullbacks but I've never seen one as "polite" as him. Legend!
Amazingly brisk and balanced runner. Incredible to think that P Montgomery had more caps - and seemingly enjoys a more enhanced reputation. AJ was twice the player IMHO.

Rolls Royce, lol...I love that. One of the best players ever. He was like a bullet when he got the ball. Thanks for this great video clip, nice to watch one of my favourite players again.
Surely the best fullback of all time. What made him dangerous was his ability to kick brilliantly with both left or right. I've seen a few comments about calling André Joubert the "Rolce Royce of Full backs", that's the nickname he's had for almost his whole rugby playing career. It's sort of a tradition in South Africa to give a player a nickname.
Thanks Andre (and Real Rugby). My testosterone levels rose again, as well as general class and dignity whilst watching this amazing human being. I am so proud of some of my Countrymen.
Thanks a lot! The most joyful games to watch, best Natal/Sharks team to support and one of the best fullback in the 90s. Such quality! Greetings from Turkey.
whereas Cullen was absolutely electric Joubert was too smooth for his own good... made it look too easy, always in the right place, practically error free, rock solid.
I remember one match when he still played for Free State, he kicked a penalty 5m from the side and 5m outside his own 22 and they caught the ball just behind the dead line. To this date, still the best goal kick I've ever seen. I wish I could find footage of that kick.
