When I read the book, I thought that the film must be shot in B+W... They did it in desaturated color that gave it a washed out look.. It was a good choice.
nice review. however i disagree wholeheartedly with one of your points. introducing more supporting characters would have been veering WAY too far away from the source material which is fundamentally a story about a father and son's relationship.
Thanks, Ryan! No worries, man. My mindset was that this film is similar in a lot of ways to The Last of Us and I thought when other small characters/companions were introduced, even briefly, it added a little bit of extra flavor to the film. Maybe just have the father and son run into another 2 companions or another man that they stuck with for a little longer would have been cool to me as long as it didn't get in the way of the father-son connection. But I totally see your point :)
I agree. The book portrays this horrid, bleak world devoid of life. And a big part of the book is trying to stay hidden and play it safe, because running and fighting just isn't an option after having not eaten for 5 days. The conflict you think the film was lacking was much more prominent in the book, and I understand how that could be difficult to translate. The conflict is the world, staying alive. Just constant trauma and hopelessness. I feel like the book showcases a lot of the inner turmoil of The Man and his journey trying to keep The Boy alive, and whether he should even bother anymore. Overall, loved the review. I think it's one of those classic situations where the book is different from the film, with no real way to transfer from one medium to the other.
This movie has been messing with my head since seeing it for the first time last week. This is a post apocalyptic film unlike any other! This is more realistic in terms of destruction of the world and despair. One thing I think that really adds to the feel of this film is the musical score. It taps the emotions, especially the scene where the wife walks off into the darkness.
I totally agree! Yeah its a dark dark movie, one of the darkest I've ever seen. It's actually pretty crazy! I was consistently floored with how grim the movie was.
You deserve more subs bro. But I disagree with the aimless, part. I think that's kinda the point. There is very little hope left, the only aim is to stay alive til the next day.
Totally understand that. I guess the realism is the ultimate goal here, but I do think a story should still have a direction and target it's hoping to hit. I think it does in some ways, they try to get to the beach to reach safety, but the journey doesn't always feel like it's cohesive. Thank you for the kind words though!
A lot of people make a lot about the ending. Were the strangers on the beach good or evil? Will the boy be cared for or will he become a meal for the family. Because it gives no solid answer what I have come to believe is that even the people taking him in did not know. If they soon found a windfall or plants started growing again, then they would be better off keeping him to soldier and eventually sire a coming generation with the daughter, if things remained grim, they would kill and eat him. It was all conditional, and that is the final message of this story, that humans are kind and generous every single time they are able to be, and vicious when faced with no other options. We are both the arms of mother and the mouth of the wolf on condition of the weather.
I love this movie. I bought it and watch it every couple years. I totally recommend it as a movie with real life prophetic possibilities. And an awesome ending! I totally recommend it.
I really enjoyed it too! I think it's a pretty good representation of what a post-apocalyptic world would be like. It pulled 0 punches and really made me think, which I enjoyed!
The movie in big part is ABOUT existential isolation so no it is not lacking any support character... The pace is suppose to be slow... They juste have to get back on THE ROAD even if the road leads no fucking where... Everyday nonetheless just like Sisyphus has to roll his rock back up the hill again and again just to watch it fall off the other side... That what makes it different from Walking dead... Only think I did not like was the cheezy ending when the boy finds a new family... Should have ended with the father dying on the beach and the boy continuing his way to no where.
I'm kinda wondering whether that family didn't eat him honestly. That could be my pessimistic side, but I think that ending is rather ambiguous, they could be evil for all we know. I still think a few supporting characters the father and son interact with in a meaningful fashion along the way would have been nice. I think I need a change of pace after awhile.
Totally understandable. I've been told by viewers before that I don't like slow-paced films, and I think that's partially true but there are definitely exceptions. I haven't seen valhalla rising actually! Worth a watch?

Dude you gotta read this book. It is so moving, and I will say there are characters at the end. Don't know if the movie ends like that but there are other good guys
Fairly good review but I would respectfully disagree with the idea that the movie needed more supporting characters. I don't think you mentioned whether or not you read the book but the movie follows it pretty closely and the overarching theme of the entire book is the relationship between the boy and the man. The flashback scenes with the mother is the biggest departure from the book; she's mentioned a few times but has almost no role in the book though I do get the choice to include her in the film to add an element of backstory. But back to the point, the relationship between the man and the boy IS the story; the extreme setting is designed to magnify this. Also, the sneaking around and avoidance of confrontation is a carryover from the book. The man only had 2 rounds at the beginning and had to use one on the roadie they encountered early on. This became an important point in the story, most especially when the man was faced with life and death situations and had to contemplate killing the boy to protect him from being cannibalized/raped, etc.
Totally fair. I haven't read the book, no. I'm not typically much of a book reader as I read enough for school. I prefer movies lol. I just think some kind of supporting characters along the way might of added some additional entertainment, but that's just me.
@@WillFoxification - It's not that you're wrong about more characters adding to the entertainment, it's just that's not how the book was written. Also, I can't recommend the book enough; there's minimal plot but the style of the writing itself is absolutely incredible.
In my opinion the movie had realistic depth that i haven't seen in a movie that basically showed if there was post-apocalyptic event similar to what happened in the movie, what people and families would do, it's quite realistic and i gotta give props to the whole setting. It's really hard to watch the first, heck the slow pacing is not my thing i agree there, heck i had to make breaks from the movie like commercials before i watched it to the end i didn't do it in one sitting, but it was really good movie i would give 10/10 for its realism and story in general. So for that bit i would give it 7/10 and my final verdict is its a Really good movie and a must watch for those who appreciate realism in drama movies.
Very much agree with you! This is a brutal, honest piece of storytelling that is not gonna be for everyone. There's very little light, if any at all. Even the ending is sort of... not entirely sure what happened there, but I don't feel good about it.

I love the movie but I still don't understand the idea that there's nothing to eat but people. Cause that not only doesn't make sense but it doesn't work in practice. Shipwrecked people or people who are stuck out at sea who eat each other die just as quick from rabbit starvation, where you're just eating lean protein and no fat cause no one had any fat on them. If it were only starved humans left with starved humans it would have ended within like a month for all of humanity
I could go into so many minute details of why this movie is a major letdown, however I must refrain from spoiling the story. To start... this is one of the most compelling and heart-swaying novels that I have ever read. The writing style that Cormac McCarthy chose is so moving. Instead of breaking the story down into chapters, each day and night is divided into short paragraphs. McCarthy truly mastered the dialog between Papa and the Boy and the other people encountered along the road. You almost feel like you are right there by their side fighting for survival in the dreary remains of the Earth. The movie has a pretty strong beginning. Introducing viewers to the bleak half-immolate world. The characters look incredible, they did an excellent job with makeup outfits and props, it was close to what I imagined while reading the book. However it doesn't take long until the movie begins to fall south. Important details weren't explained, large amounts of dialog between papa and the boy were simply left out. Many scenes were a blend of what was meticulously explained throughout several sections of the book, which may leave viewers who haven't read the story with questions. This movie could easily have been an hour longer, perhaps it would have been less vague and boring. Movies that are based of books are notorious for falling short, however there are so many details that could have been added to make this movie at least worth the time to watch if there was more attention to detail. Please read this book, it is so worth it. The movie is a letdown.
In most cases, yes! Novels like the lord of the rings and the harry potter series i felt was a more emotional experience than the movies but when it comes to The Road or stephen kings Dreamcatcher, the novels seemed so slow paced that it was hard to feel invested in the characters but the movies gave you such a vision of what it could be that i found the novels far more enjoyable, in fact! When it comes to the Novel though, its unfortunate how much misery and hardships that they went through was not in the movie but like your review says, the film sseemed so realistic and made me think far more about my own self than the novel ever did! And With that, great review! :-)
Thanks so much, Andy! I appreciate the great insights. As someone who doesn't read that many books, I like hearing how great stories resonate with passionate readers like yourself. Have you read "IT?" Is the novel better?
Not entirely but from what i have read, its so-so to me! A lot of the beginning is introducing the characters which is relatively slower paced but definitely seemed to gain speed about a quarter of the way in! Now the one i truly enjoyed was Cujo! What they never touched on in the movie that King had in the book is that you were told the dogs thoughts! From a lazy loaf of a giant friendly dog to seemingly being possessed by the spirit of a serial killer over time and yeah it ends with a massive bang! That book will reside with me forever and how i was a rabies crazed, serial killer possessed dog trying to eat this woman and child out of pure uncontrollable rage! Its a fantastic read!
Still the most beautiful, yet dismal, yet hopeful, yet down to earth film I've ever seen! This movie is an unspeakable experience for me no matter how many times I watch it! And a rare case where the film is better than the novel it portrays, imo!
Thanks, Raymond! The reason for that is to avoid copyright claims. Copyright claims are rampant here on UA-cam, often unjustly applied to content creators like myself. Due to this, I try to limit my use of trailer and clip footage to low levels to avoid these claims. Studios seem a bit less concerned with use of photos over video, but there's no formula/rhyme or reason to the madness sadly :)
Hey I was browsing thru your older videos and came on this review. I saw this movie in theaters..not many people there but thought it was a great very understated film that really showed Viggo's range. Also liked the short cameo of Robert Duvall. This movie was one of the best and most realistic depictions of a post apocolytic world I've seen yet. Once thing I really liked about this movie is what was NOT said and/or NOT seen or explained. What I mean here is......the father and son had no names....no one had names in the movie, they were just father and son. Also, we have no idea how and why everything died or even how long ago it happened. These absenses made the environment feel all hat more bleak. Like I said...i really liked this movie but unlike most movies I like I ind it hard to watch again because it's so depressing, so bleak and the movie brings you to that low level. So i've only seen the movie once but it's a good one for sure.
Dude, great points! Yeah I honestly haven't watched the road since because its so dark and gritty that I'm not sure its meant for multiple viewing experiences because it's not necessarily enjoyable lol. And yeah I think this is probably the most realistic post apocalyptic film I've seen. I think this is probably the depths humanity would sink to should this kind of situation occur.
Thanks so much, glad you liked the movie! I've had a lot of really great movies requested to me, you can see the playlist on my channel. I'd definitely recommend prisoners though, it's great!! :)
Thanks so much!! Yeah I'd love to do a fun video like that sometime. I'm hoping to branch out into more in depth videos at some point, just trying to narrow down ideas :)
This movie is irritating. If you hate watching people make stupid decisions over and over, then you will hate this movie. The kid is the opposite of a survivor, he is a weak boat anchor that the man drags along behind him. I couldn't wait for it to be over. Spoilers When they left the shelter just because they heard something outside it...that was when I stopped caring if they lived or not because I wanted them both to die. Up to that point the father was mostly a sympathetic character but the boat anchor boy was irritating from the moment he came on screen to the very end. He is weak and ignorant to the world, and that family at the end prob ate him.
if i was that husband i would never let my wife go to darkness and die....strugle till the end together((( but i love this movie...in addition bro you are cool guy! God bless you brother)

If it were only starved humans left with starved humans it would have ended within like a month for all of humanity
I have similar complaints about this one. I loved the book, but the film would have been better with a narrator to get more of the book into the film.
Interesting! Yeah I enjoyed it overall too. It's very dark, one of the darkest films I've seen in awhile actually, but still good!
I saw this movie and thought it was good. The cannibals bit was pretty shocking.
Definitely shocking! It's a dark movie!
@@WillFoxification : that cellar... 🥶
An absolutely breathtaking film! A case where the movie is actually better than the book, in my opinion!
Indeed! I haven't actually read the book myself. Do you generally find the books to be better than the adapted films?
But you really should read the novel! I think the movie could help people visualize and appreciate the novel far more
Thanks so much, Andy!
Lol this guy mentioned The Last of Us. Wonder what he thinks of Part 2
Spoiler alert, I don't like it.
Nothing in this movie is possible: 4 months without sunlight, they all will be dead after 4 months of lack of vitamin D
I don't get enough vitamin d now
@@WillFoxification only if you be working at nuclear submarine
they should cast vigo Mortensen as Joel if they make a last of us movie. he's perfect for the role.
Dude I was actually thinking the same thing after watching it! But to me, josh brolin is still the perfect actor for Joel.
WillFoxification can't argue with ya there👍
Maverick Mckee Wouldn't mind Jackman either, but Brolin is perfect for the role.
Still the most beautiful, yet dismal, yet hopeful, yet down to earth film I've ever seen! This movie is an unspeakable experience for me no matter how many times I watch it! And a rare case where the film is better than the novel it portrays, imo!
I recommend you to review 'A History of Violence'
Awesome dude. I'll add it to my list!
extremely dark, and realistic movie. i just wish the ending was dark, even though i find that family very suspect
its definitely in my top 3, along with stalker and tetsuo the iron man
Definitely! I kinda feel like things don't end well for the son, but it's too ambiguous to say with any certainty. I suspect cannibals!
Also nice top 3!
I like your review but please more video segments of the movie instead of just still photographs.
It was sad
It sure was! It's a very dark, and depressing, yet good film :)
i loved this movie really glad i gave it a chance really great review also, any movies you would recommend?
Thanks so much, glad you liked the movie! I've had a lot of really great movies requested to me, you can see the playlist on my channel. I'd definitely recommend prisoners though, it's great!! :)
WillFoxification cool i will!. your a great reviewer up there with the best, you should make a best movies on netflix video sometime!
Spoilers
When they left the shelter just because they heard something outside it...that was when I stopped caring if they lived or not because I wanted them both to die. Up to that point the father was mostly a sympathetic character but the boat anchor boy was irritating from the moment he came on screen to the very end. He is weak and ignorant to the world, and that family at the end prob ate him.
Unfortunately they couldn’t add everything from the book and I think they may have chamged something’s it’s been awhile since I read it
I may need to read it!
@@WillFoxification if I remember correctly it gets way darker
What's up with your background? Is that a curtain?
Nah it's a fabric wooden backdrop :). It's designed for photography/videography purposes.
i just watched that movie...holy cows i almost cri
ed.....this is so realistick as hell...fucking cannibals(((((((( poor PAPA(((
Dudeeeee it's a super dark movie, crazy dark!
if i was that husband i would never let my wife go to darkness and die....strugle till the end together((( but i love this movie...in addition bro you are cool guy! God bless you brother)
I agree man, I wouldn't let her just go die like that. And thank you, you're a cool guy too I'm sure!
Just watched this movie. Loved it! I wanted to punch the kid a few times tho lol
He is kind of obnoxious, but I get he's a kid and he's scared. Hell I'd be scared too.
@@WillFoxification I get that too but this is all he's ever known and he acts like he's never seen it. The dad got shot in the leg and went after the guy who shot him and killed yelled no. Like you all getting shot at the the dads tryna protect you lmao
The dad dies in the end
SPOILERS :)
Cmon man lose that hat wtf is that? Thanks for review tho with little spoilers. Oh nvm you did spoil it damn.
I liked the movie itself , but I COULDN'T STAND THAT KIDS VOICE!
The voice , bothered me so much that I really couldn't enjoy the movie itself.
Understandable. I wish the kid was a little more capable, buy I think I'd be scared pretty senseless in that world too and I'm much older than he is :P
Yes, he was like a 3 or 4 year old instead of a 10 or 11 year old.
I didn't like this alot
The film? I'm sorry to hear that, man! Why not? :(
I liked the look of the film and the performances but i thought the directing was very dull and i thought it was trying way to hard to be impactful and just the movie was to depressing for me
Noir Detective It was extremely depressing, I'll say that. I did think the movie could be a bit dull at times too, I think with such a good premise, it could have been a little bit better. I wish there were more characters :(
And that is why you have no friends.
great review!! in the middle of watching the road right now...love it so far...definitely agree about the pacing though for sure...if ya like music check out my music review channel...just getting started though need some support...and btw you SHOULD review a history of violence I saw someone else mention it...GREAT MOVIE!! check out my channel
Thanks, Vlad! I shall check it out.
movie sucked
I'm sorry you feel that way :(. What didn't you like about it?
@@WillFoxification slow, unorganised, annoying whining kid with zero common sense and the intellect of a 4 year old. No reason to go on this great trek or if so, do it when the weather is slightly better as seasons will still exist. No regard to science, no trees. What are they going to breathe? I can go on but movie on a whole was not for me.
