L has the ability to go after the people he finds interesting and use whatever means possible to catch them. Change the world the way he wants it while boosting his own ego. Both are super interesting characters.

Having watched the full musical in Japanese, that's honestly how it comes across in the stage version. In fact, L's Korean actor has said that the director told him that L and Light do have a kind of love, based on how alike they are (...They do both think rather highly of themselves).
I personally think it's a good movie if you consider it it's own movie, not an adaptation of the anime. Because it messed a lot up, but the effects and filming were really well done, it just didn't get the story right.
