- I do not own Death Note the Musical or anything to do with it.
(There are a couple more verses in this one than in the previously released version of this song)
Singers: Jeremy Jordan & Death Note ensemble
Music: Frank Wildhorn
Lyrics: Jack Murphy and Ivan Menchell
What's funny about all of this is how many people sincerely agree with Light's 'logic' here when it clearly isn't even meant to be good or reasonable - just emotionally compelling, because arbitrary insinuations and appeals to emotion are what Light is throwing against a legal system that is the product of several thousand years of people having ideas like Light's, trying them, and it going extremely badly. And this is literally in the song. Like...I'm not a big fan of the concept of cutting deals to avoid trial, but that's because almost every Legal Aid lawyer is so overworked that forcing their clients to cut deals regardless of their guilt is the only real option available. Not because the concept of plea deals is inherently corrupt, and when it is it's more likely to be a matter of individuals representing the State's side being corrupt to varying degrees. A state that he isn't holding accountable because he cut deals with various governments giving them blanket immunity in exchange for them not trying to find him.
Like...the people talking about 2020 and wondering where the justice is...do you mean the continued murder of black kids by cops? Because a system where we just appoint someone to decide who is innocent and who is guilty without a trial and deliver instant death penalties, without Light's superpower of being smarter than anyone to ever live in our world and being able to perfectly determine who's innocent and who's guilty with no false positives, that would basically just mean tens of thousands of more dead black kids, because the person deciding every case would be Donald fucking Trump or something.
Sure, if you can find a superhuman god emperor who genuinely does know better than all of us, absolutely let him enforce justice like the fucking Night Haunter if you want, but while we're limited to realistic human beings, the whole point of the systems we have is to serve as checks on any individual's power, because everyone thinks they know better and they're all wrong. Only systems which fundamentally leave no one happy can actually do anything to fix the fundamental flaws in how humanity works.
We have a system that is based around the idea of punishing the innocent as infrequently as possible even if this means bad people escape punishment, because it very much is an either-or proposition unless you're a nascent god-king like Light Yagami, and if you *think* you are, that's when you become a problem someone else is going to have to deal with.
As abortion dissapears and gay rights are targeted in the US, as trans people are killed and die at greater rates, as our elected officials consistently fail to fulfill their pomises, as wars are fought by countries feeding propoganda to their people until wrong and right are distant shades of mud, as climate change goes consistently without action that the wealthy may yet line their pockets, do you maintain your stance against revolution?
@@aprilkoyyen7720 I agree.
@@aprilkoyyen7720 You bring up a good point but I think it's a bit different from what the original comment meant. The original comment points out that the Light's position is flawed due to seeing things in a simplified way, things are not that easy and if the things were to work as Light suggests then even more innocent would suffer. HOWEVER that does not mean the system is great or flawless. All the things You mentioned are very much there and should be opposed because they are weeds that will feast on lack of justice. Nevertheless I think both of Your points should be taken together - A call to action and against the injustice without being self-righteous or harming more innocents than You were trying to protect
@@aprilkoyyen7720 light yagami is not the one promoting a revolution
Light is right with how he feels, but there is a reason why the teacher calls his arguments simple. They are. "Just kill the problem" is the intuitive dictator's way.
There are times to attack Versailles, and there are times to keep decorum. Most of the people light hates are the result of the same system he hates, not just the perpetrators. He is not changing the system, he is just killing the inconvenient part of its victims. He is treating the symptom to fulfill his ego trip. Like any teenager with "the ultimate weapon" would. Light is an interesting character. A good character - he is not a good person. Or that smart.
the way he says "get away murder" just hits different

When the writers of the musical understands these characters more than the Netflix adaptation writers. Thank god.
Where is the Justice
when i saw the netflix adaption it was so weird they made light dumb 🤦🏻♀️
I like how they adapted it to fit American culture in the translating. It changed light’s motive a bit, but it really fits
Gigiometry no I don’t think it is
And these people didnt like death note. One of them only did this cause their son asked them
now THIS is how you americanize deathnote. in the manga they don't really mention things like dodging or paying people off once in court, because japan tends to presume guilty until proven innocent, but it is a big thing in the US and makes the argument a lot more heartfelt and honestly makes light sound a lot more like a 'good guy' initially when he explains his black and white viewpoint and deciding he'll make the world fit his views instead of him changing to the world, because his idea for the world is better
Correction: It's SUPPOSED To Be A Big Thing In The US. But The Reality Is,You're Guilty Until Ether Proven Innocent Or Can Worm Your Way Around It,OR Wrongful Judgments Are Placed On The Victim (Example: You Got Raped Because You Dressed Like A Slut And Were Asking For It). The "Justice" System Is Beyond Broken And Honestly,Every Word Light Says In This Song Is Pure Fact.
@ehud kotegaro Really? And What Would YOU Have Done If You Saw A Women Being Raped By Bikers And You Had The Power To Kill Them Without Ever Being Caught? Because I'd Have Killed Those Fuckers Dead.
Demonic Queen I don’t know how old you are, but there is nothing in the law that says that you can be “asking for it”, there is no actual legal foundation to your statement
Demonic Queen also the innocent until proven guilty rule is what lets so much scum free

Cause the system hasn't been fixed and those still in power won't listen to fix it. That's why it's still relevant. Hell the system really does just need an overhaul at this point, Light has a point it's broken beyond repair.
Edit: Spelling mistake
Well, for one thing it's only 3 years old...
But yeah it will probably continue to be relevant decades to come.

HE'S RIGHT IN THIS SONG,,,,
He had good motivations (at first), but believing himself to be entitled to mass murder in the name of these ideas is stupid and got him rightfully labeled a criminal.
The writers REALLY understood the characters.
BHXProduction You can thank Frank Wildhorn
I disagree to be honest. I thought Light was supposed to be composed and kind of kept his views to himself. Never would I think of him arguing with his teacher and kind of losing his cool over it. Also, all of the students are singing along telling their views and agreeing with Light, but in the anime there was a scene with Light and Ryuk talking about how humans would always claim the morally right decision of "no one can kill or decides what to do with criminals by themselves" yet would agree but in secret, the opposite of what this song presents. I'm not a fan of the musical because I think one of the main concepts of the manga and anime is that some things aren't necessarily left for our "interpretation" but aren't said directly or mentioned very quickly. By adding songs, that takes away that factor which personally for me makes the original story so amazing. I do however like the songs, just not the musical.
Idk why I went off like that ^^ lmaoo

I think it's more to set up Light's character. And I think it's more of a internal dialogue. I never thought it was actually happening. I thought it's everyone's inner thoughts. But light would totally argue with everyone, sure he'll do it in a way that it wouldn't offend authority figure but he definitely has issues with authority.
Especially the fact that the students are on lights side at the end of the song just shows how impactful he is.
"Let the rich and famous get away with murder"....Misa?
yes!
But Miss doesn’t get away with it because she’s rich, it’s because she was able to hide that she’s Kira 2... at least in the anime, not sure about the musical
@@bradensmith9884 She's famous and gets away with murder. How she does it is a diff thing
Empchi She didn’t hide it with money they meant. What they meant is she was able to hide it by just being a bit clever.
light didn’t even like misa though, just kept her around because of her usefulness
Jeremy KILLED this role
Definitely!!!
I really like the Deathnote Musical because I think it does a really good job of balancing the fact that Light does have goals and morals with his fall to a God complex
Exactly! in one song it outlines he feelings and where he stands so well, and then it's able to capture his fall as well, and his "game" with L to see who'll win.
"Let the rich and famous get away with murder"
Yes, Light, it sure would be awful if someone abused their power to get away with murder.
Hint hint
I wanna like this but I can't... for obvious reasons
Oh the irony XD
Humans. It's a circle. L is using unethical methods to. Because he can.
To be fed we all kill. Plants are life too. It's energy floating , shifting , changing shape. F
Uh, he didn't get away with it though? He was killed, and then he has to spend all of eternity in purgatory/hell for all eternity because he used the death note? Like that's one of the first rules it states in the book? Also, his reputation was ruined, so I wouldn't say that he got away with it. In my opinion, if he had gotten away with it, he would have died of old age whilst passing on the title of Kira or something similar.
He was such a decent guy with decent reasoning but no one vibe-checked him and he lost control of his power 😔
Oh man, that might have been a game changer. If someone knew about Light and helped keep Kira in check, things might have been different. But Kira never lets someone remain his equal, only his pawn, so even then I still doubt Kira would have allowed someone to restrain him.
Fr he was kind of spitting facts at the beggining
Let’s rephrase that. Musical Light had good reasoning who just needed a vibe check. Anime Light always had a god complex and he quickly went from wanting to punish criminals to becoming a god in the new world and destroy anyone who got in his way
Me
@darknessrasgriz Oh, I can almost guarantee L would have used it at least once just to test it, and then after learning it was already pretty much too late to turn back I could see him trying to use it more, but on the other hand L was more of a Sherlock Holmes type character who seemed like he enjoyed the hard mysteries and almost wanted an equal so either I could see him not using it because he'd feel it would be "too boring" or he'd kinda become Kira only with a riddler twist to it because he'd WANT someone to be his equal and catch him.
we’re really all switching to Light’s side in 2020
When L is hot but Light do be making sense
They both make sense, they want the same thing, but use very different means of reaching that goal, that why their conflict is so interesting. Vigilantism seems like a good idea at first, but unchecked could very well lead to what Light became. L opposed his methods, not ideals.
Yes surrrr
@@ShersterQ We are switching to Lights side. This song reminds me of america 2020 so badly right now.
True xD
I have to admit it. hes right. a lot of guilty people end up going free.often from "Good behavior" the victims are left with fear. trust me, i know.
Tiger Lilly Yeah and in the US, if you are famous then you can get away with everything. I have seen so many reports where men commited some crime for example rape and they went into jail for a month and that was it. The system really is broken and unfair for the poor. It only benefits the rich amd white.
@@vivientakacs5599 You know thats really sad, but often times true. But the problem with Light here, is that he sees it truly in black and white, but what about people who killed in self-defence, or a manslaughter, it can´t be just"they have to go to the block" and than cut their heads off, but you are right in saying the system is very broken, or maybe just not made in a way that would be benefitial to the victims as well as the people who are not fully guilty(like manslaughter as long as its not like some idiot made decisions he/she knew were out of line and deathly dangerous to others).
Good behaviour is not the issue so long as it is earned. The goal of the prison system should both to punish crimes and to help the criminals reintegrate to society. The system you have in the US is shit.
@@Zu_Zu_Zu Anime Light specifically targeted criminals that were either repeat offenders, nor showed remorse for what they did.
He didn't go after small time offenders, and self defense/accident cases.
@@Arella17 Actually, in Japan, there's a lot of innocents who go to prison because they have this "Guilty until proven innocent" thing going on, Light would have killed them since he just looked up names of prisoners, plus he actually killed people for small crimes that were caught or broadcasted, and let's not forget he killed people in his way, innocent people who just wanted the killings to stop. Then there was the former FBI agent who was killed for getting too close, who only wanted to avenge her husband who was killed for tailing Light

Typically villains have what’s called an “I am” song, and heroes have an “I want” song. (For example, In the movie _Beauty and the Beast_, the villain Gaston has a song about how he is great. Belle has a song about how she wants something new in her life.) In this song, Light, our villain, has an “I want” song about how he wants the laws to be fair. The teacher simultaneously has an “I am” or in this case “it is” part in the song. That totally flips the script on who is the hero and who is the villain in this musical and they did it all in one song.
you could also say that L's intro song is more of an "I am" sing than anything else, though he has an "i want" song later
i AM WHEEZING OVER THE FACT THAT in the song it says " Isn't everybody sick to death of all this stuff? Can't we stand up and say enough?
And Light casually proceeds to commit *murder*
Like man choose are you sick of people dying or them not dying???
I think they meant that everyone is sick to death of crimes going unpunished, not necessarily people in general dying but innocents getting hurt
I really love this because it emphasizes what I think is the moral of Death Note. At first, you side with Light because he's mostly right but then as the series goes on he gets corrupted and his "justice" wasn't actually justice. The point is not that Light got corrupted, it's that ANYONE in this position would become corrupt. The anime says it itself: "The true evil is the power to kill somebody". It's not saying that Light's ideals are wrong, it's just saying that NO ONE can be trusted to carry out his "utopia". Plus, what about mercy? Not all criminals deserve it but some criminals definitely do. Light's not wrong but the world cannot be that black and white. Once you realize that, you understand that you have to side with the teacher. Even L said that Light's utopia was immature. I love how this song (in concordance with the anime) leads you from the young Light's perspective to the aged teacher's perspective.
can we PLEASE talk about how this song is such a bop? like the meaning is so deep, especially in 2020, but the singing is also incredible. it’s one of my favorite songs now!
I am francly becoming a fan of the composer. All the songs are great. Same with Jakyl and Hyde. He is really good. And the singers are amazing
And he is the voices of varion from tangled the siries
I guess if you think philosophically you can say that Light became what he hated most a corrupt man who ignores the law and then ultimately pays the price with his life
This! Light saw a genuine problem with his country's justice, but instead of working to make improvements and address the root problems, he decided he'd just judge everything himself and became an even more punishing and unfair system
@@somedragonbastard Light actually agrees with the justice system though, he's mad that they just don't kill people instead of sending them to jail
This musical being.. well... this musical
It dawned on me that Kira's true downfall happened when he killed the very man who not only lived up to his idealistic standard to which he held humanity but also was the very basis of this standard, aka his father. Kira initially started killing criminals -aka people everyone agrees are evil- and then he started killing people who oppose him and turned against the system -aka people some say are evil but others say are necessary- and eventually he started wanting to clear the world from people who merely arent as good as he wanted humans to be, aka as good as his father. After killing the only real human who lived up to his standard his downfall was reassured because his crusade would never end no one would be less deserving of death than his father in his eyes.
This is brilliant and explains so much.
Exactly! Light and Kira are very different characters, light truly wanted the people who hurt so many people to suffer, and Kira was obsessed with success and greed. I don’t think the original light would of killed anyone close to him. But when he gets that red glint in his eyes that’s Kira, not light. His true turning point is when he killed L. I feel like L knew that light was Kira but couldn’t believe it, when light killed him he also killed his sense of justice. Both of them where the same, they wanted justice. But Kira took control. You can see he’s a completely different character when he gives up the notebook, it’s almost like he’s possessed. Everyone who touches the notebook becomes corrupted. For me light died at the same time as L, once he killed his best friend, Kira took over and could kill anyone with no remorse. Even his own farther. Because he doesn’t care anymore. His eyes became to clouded with ego to see what he had done. Sorry for the long comment that you probably haven’t read. I’m autistic and very passionate about anime ( ・∇・)

It Was A Mix Of Both The Power AND The Fact L Pushed Him To Used It In Ways He Never Intended.
Demonic Queen That’s one way to look at it but I wonder about that ... After all he had already become a serial killer before L appeared. He had already set his mind and decided that killing, safely at his home without exposing himself, was justified if it was against murderers

Demonic Queen Murder is still murder ... I understand the first killing since it was technically self defense in the behalf of the children. But the other ones ?
Everyone has its own point of view but I think that self defense and saving someone’s endangered life are the only instances when you can kill someone. After all death penalty has never made any place on Earth safer ( statistics you can easily find on internet prove it) so what purpose does it serve ? Revenge ? But revenge isn’t justice. Justice is to treat everyone fairly according to their rights and life is the most basic human right. No one should be deprived of it except if there are no other choices.
Besides shouldn’t we strive to better than criminals ? If killing is illegal then what entitles us to do it too ?
If you defend a principle you have to follow it as much as you can.

The problem with me and Death Note is that I supported Light. I feel that if you’ve murdered in cold blood and feel no regret, then you deserve karma, which in the case of murder, is death to you.
I agreed with his ideology, because I’m quite utilitarian, but when he started killing people who got in the way of him I knew he’d become corrupted himself. Criminals deserve justice, karma or comeuppance, if that’s the death penalties for murderers then I feel they deserve it. I would personally want to give the death penalty to serial rapists, but that’s probably because a friend of mine was raped and she still isn’t the same and THE BASTARD WALKED FREE.
That got a little hijacked by my feels, sorry, but I agree with Light in the beginning. But then he killed criminals who committed minor crimes and even innocents and even his own family if they ‘got in the way.’ The power got to his head, and if you showed Light at the end of the series to the Light at the beginning, he wouldn’t have supported himself.
I feel the same way: truly evil people who don't deserve second chances always fall through the cracks while people who've committed minor crimes always end up suffering. Light's the definiton of "the path to hell is paved with good intentions." And don't be sorry for getting a little hijacked by your feelings, it's natural to hate scum like the one who hurt your friend.
True light reminds me of anikn wanting to save padme and Luke and Leia but instead went dark and power hungry
"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”
That's kinda the point I think. Deathnote is all about that nothing is fully black and white and also the idea that playing God will fuck anyone up
@Andrea De Luca yeah sorry if I wasn’t clear, Light was initially ‘executioner’ in the view of his ideology, but then took lives of people who didn’t deserve that - so Light himself then deserved death. Sorry I’m not very clear in my wordings lol

I can't stop thinking about how this is basically Light's "Y/N Sings Fight Song" moment.
Except it's actually meaningful, unlike Y/N’s existence
Your typical wattpad story except out of nowhere Y/N gets a Death Note and slowly spirals into having a god complex
@@bleepbloop5251 Big "The Ballad of Sara Berry" vibes.
WOAHHH IS THAT THE ONE WHO'S VA AS LUCIFER?
YES
In German they have really the same VA.
Is this Jeramy Jordan?
YES
@@WhatDoIUseForHandle I love that man
@@Molar145 REAL SAMEEE
hell yes 🔥
Yes I love him
ik the context and I'm not saying he's right but bro has a point with this song
But where was the justice for all the people you killed, Light?
Oof.
If you can’t pay the time (in the afterlife), don’t do the crime
It has been served as they died
The Justice WAS Killing The People.
Chloe Anderson I think my friend niomi would agree with that
Congrats to light becoming lucifer
You have to wonder: if he’d simply followed in his dad’s footsteps, would he have ended up a cowboy cop?
I guess we’ll never know ...
the creator said he would have become one fo the best detectives I think, and yes, he would have followed in his dad's footsteps, and worked with L. Maybe they could have been friends for real
2024 election in a nutshell!
I despise Light with every inch of my soul but this SLAPS
Jeremy Jordan is a freaking treasure his voice is so perfect
Better than the netflix film
That's not hard.
Even if you don’t know the musical, don’t know the context, isn’t it on par on what’s happening in the US today? Where is the fucking justice?
I know right. This song fits well with the police brutality and the protesters.
I have no idea what Death Note is or who this Light character is, but may I just say...
This song is a f--ing masterpiece! I mean the lyrics, the music, Jordan's voice. I've been listening to this on repeat. Wow.
If you're in the US and have a Netflix account, you're in luck. The entire original series is available to stream.
The original protagonist was much more of a psychopath, but that was what made him so interesting to watch. Imagine a Sherlock story told from Moriarty's perspective, if Moriarty had a supernatural murder weapon on his side, and you've got a decent picture of what Death Note is like.
FR I CAME BECAUSE OF JEREMY BUT THIS SONG IS JUST ✨✨✨
And this makes me interested in the story but I'm scared cat lmao
This song is very Set it Off vibes
Jermy also did good job doing lucifer from hazbin hotel
This song fits for 2020. Police brutality.
True
Or politicians getting away with violating the Constitution left and right.
it fits for america in general but 2020 mostly
@@red_five3325 Yoooo truth
The interesting thing is the fact that because this was meant to reflect the Japanese legal system, I think Light's arguments seem a lot more compelling. I feel like in this version, it's meant to criticize the corruption via billionaires/companies being able to be immune to the law because they can just pay out and the less financially stable people cannot get their justice, because a company can afford to drag a case on for forever and bleed out their opponent. In Japan, the issues does indeed lie in their actual justice system. A lot of American serial killers do indeed get up getting jailed and usually die in prison (though I am not a fan of the sensationalization of them), but a lot of Japan's serial killers often do not. And that's where Light's arguments lie.
I've been listening to this on repeat since Roe v Wade was overturned
Light do be making good points tho
As a victim of the system I agree with his points not his methods
The fact that light yagami is lucifer from hazbin
In German too. They have the same VA
0:14 I heard that voice before...Oh wait I know where.
VARIAN FROM TANGLED😊
Exactly ^^
The thing Light never understood is that justice isn’t just about punishing the wicked.
It’s also about finding the grey, a weighing it upon the scales to make absolutely sure the innocent go free AND the guilty are punished. I wonder how many Light murdered who were wrongly accused.
you know the world is fucked when you start to agree with light yagami
The most chilling line for me is "perhaps it's time to drain the colour from it then ... "
Who else listened to this like 3 times?
More than 3 times
I've had it on a loop for over an hour...
I love you guys! Only three songs left!
Where did you get this version? Are there any other extended songs?
George Hovhannisian Got it through the grapevine. All the songs I have are on my channel.
Can you upload an mp3 archive? I only have the 8 songs from wiki...
THE RICH AND FAMOUS GET AWAY WITH MURDERRRRRRR
The best line in this to point to that’ll foreshadow Light’s fall is the one about black and white thinking. The teacher proclaims that the world is not black or white, things are more complicated than perfectly good or perfectly bad.
Light responds by saying they should ‘drain the color from it’ showing his very black and white worldview. Since he will never think of himself as being in the wrong, he will always be on that ‘perfectly good’ side and thus anyone against him is automatically ‘perfectly bad’.
It is a dangerous worldview that does not allow for self reflection. Perhaps at first he leans on the morally right side, but even as he falls he will never change his mind on him being perfectly good.
Edit: spelling
This isn't a song. It's a manifesto.
I mean, you aren't wrong
Jeremy Jordans voice is absolutely amazing
off topic but the tune to the first part of the chorus reminds me of that one descendants song😭😭
Which one?
@@gschlauchplayz9641 once upon a time i think?? i could be wrong i haven't watched it in a while lols
we could have had THIS instead of hamilton?!?
Jeremy Jordan as light please, I friking love JJ so much!!! But he is not a light, that’s just how it is.
when you havent even seen the death note anime but you heard jeremy jordan
Watch it
in the end of the song :
Teacher : okay, okay, I know, it's nowhere to be found, but now, can we continue the class ?
Ok, but let's change topics. 😉
Honestly love how this musical perfectly represents the characters ideals and feelings in such a dramatic way. It’s so perfect too. Like, perfect fucking singing and lyrics.
I just noticed that at 0:50 a certain tune starts which reminds me of the tune in There are lines. Also, this song very much reminds me of Anders from Dragon Age 2. XD
And Jeremy Jordan is being amazing, as always.
Theatre kids and weebs unite ✊
Yasss
Me, a lawyer, jamming to this song ...
yall telling couldve have had a death note phase instead of hamilton😭
Ohhhh my god i see varian singing this
Same I'm not the only varian fan I have been one since episode1
Same I can imagine him singing this during his villain arc
Saaaaaame
@@charlestubaugh6560 me too
What's interesting is how in the beginning of the song, Light does mention protecting people briefly, but the longer is goes on the more it becomes about punishment, negating the fact that laws were not inherently created for punishment, but to keep peace.
It's really interesting to see what types of injustice this song tackles depending on the country that adapts it. This version talks about how rich criminals can just buy their way out of jail, while the brazillian version talks about political corruption and media manipulation.
Ok I know the context but.. he's got a point..
Yeah definitely
yep
This was literally written for Varian, and the fact that Jamie Jordan sings this just proves it even more
BRO EXACTLY
Listened to this again today...feels all too relevant for the US right now 😞

i wish i was in the universe you come from where They're Only Human is more popular than Where is the Justice
man, the are some POWERFUL lines here, like "show me what's right about the wrongs that we allow?"
maybe if light had said such things in the original material, then he would've actually been the tragic character that the opening and ending songs portray him as
just to be clear, i love the original work as it is, it's just the opening and ending songs have always made me angry with how much they "forgive" light
I thought this was gonna be cringe af but holy shit broadway watch out
Anyone in 2020
I have no idea about Death note but this is so Ace Attorney coded??
there is an animatic with this song and 20 year old Miles
Who else thinks that 2020 needs to give this musical another go?
Thank you so much for uploading all of the reworked songs as well! I love the added verses and this one will always remain in my top. The passion and voice just fits so perfectly for Light. We are honestly so lucky that they finished the rest of the songs for the demo and that I'm still in slight disbelief coming to America at all!!
I should have expected I'd find you here. :) I absolutely love this one too, I think this is honestly one of my favorites on the entire soundtrack. :)
When is it coming to America?
+MissCagedDemons We don't know yet, the writer just said "soon". I really wish we had a concrete date though!
EchoFlower Productions yeah me too
Why did nobody tell me that this was a thing??
No because light literally right ...
