    This is my favorite way to keep things neat once you’ve purged. It’s your “scan the room” method.
    Rules of the house
    If you bring it into the room, take it out of the room.
    If you drop it, pick it up.
    If it’s empty, throw it out.
    If you make a mess, clean it up.
    If it’s a dirty item, put it in the sink or the hamper.
    When you’re done with something…
    If it’s a blanket, fold it up.
    If it’s a glass or a dish, put it in the sink.
    If it’s a game, put it away.

    I’m 30, two young kids, and it’s hard to find inspiration to cook and clean 45 times a day, but I literally can’t think in a dirty environment, the mess really gets on my nerves. I use “jinday vlog”, or other Korean tidying and organizing vids, to relax and find that inspiration. They are helpful and pleasing to the eye. And your videos work for me as well. Thank you and love from Russia ❤

      It is hard with young kids. It will improve as they get older. A suggestion is to create a small place for yourself--even a bedside table--with some flowers or some nice,smelling hand lotion. You can retreat to that spot to rejuvenate your spirits. spirits. 2:22

    I really like your basic rules: do you love it/need it/use it. Some might say the wire strippers I've had for over 40 years and used twice should go, but there is no practical substitute and they take up very little space in a toolbox, so they stay. What do you know, I need them again and will use them shortly.
    I can say from my own experience never to purge when irritated by all the clutter. Bad decisions get made with respect to what goes and what stays, as I found out about 20 years ago. I have purged calmly and carefully a few times since, and kept such sessions narrow in scope and therefore brief in time so as not to get overwhelmed. My new rule was not to keep accumulating, and this was much easier than I thought it would be.

    • @MeanOldLady
      @MeanOldLady 6 місяців тому +2

      Yeah, I NEVER purge old tools, especially when most modern stuff is crap in comparison. Same for old shelving & metal frames. If anything, they can be upcycled into storage options.
      ETA: Same with old appliances. I've got a 40 year old washer, dryer & stove that work better than the modern junk does - that the rest of my family moans about breaking down, after pawning off the dinged up, old appliances onto me...

    NEVER PUT THINGS DOWN. Put it away. You never have to declutter if you never make a mess! For this to work, you have to have a place for everything.

  • @jcriverside

    Karen Kingston (Clearing Your Clutter) had 3 questions except they are: Do you love it? Is it useful? and the best... How does it make you feel when you look at it?. That one was a game changer for me. If I don't feel good or even neutral when I look at something (it evokes guilt, shame, resentment), it most likely has to go. Also, I found that keeping pictures of some things (vs the thing) is sufficient. I have regretted letting a few things go - mostly because I miss their utility and occasionally for sentimental reasons, but I'm mostly at peace with what's gone. It's probably best to do it when you're not in a desperate mode (divorce time or in the flurry of a move) so that you make careful decisions.

    I use "take one wash two" for the dirty dishes. If I use a cup for tea, I wash two cups from the sink of I don't have time to wash them all at once.
    When buying stuff I always ask "but where to put it?" If the answer is "I don't know" or " I guess it would stay in the box untill I find space for it" then I won't buy it.

    I have a pretty basket that I use to gather up things out of place. It’s like the size for collecting seashells. Nothing huge. Just happy when I look at it. I have also found that we struggle with keeping horizontal surfaces clean so I have a messy one. I keep the rest clear but the coffee table can have magazines, coasters, Kleenex box, whatever. It gets cleared once a week. Right now it’s full of med supplies for my husband. It makes it easier for him.

    *Clothing and Linens* . I thrift 90% of my clothing so I'm very mindful about going through drawers and the closet at least once a year to purge items. I did the KonMari folding method for my drawers 3 years ago and I'm proud to say I have maintained it. I utilized bins to sort my bed linens and keep them on the upper shelf in the bedroom closet. I'm good with two sets of sheets and pillow cases, one duvet cover and a quilt. Putting laundry away ASAP was a new habit I developed.

    This is great! I do one in, one out for new clothes. For my daughter who is 7 we do a few piles: trash, keep, donate, take a photo then trash (this is the most important pile that moves us to decluttering as if she wants to see it again she can, she has never once asked to).

    I'm changing things in my home and I have a question that's personal to me: Does it date back to my first marriage/Was it a gift from my first marriage wedding shower? If the answer is yes, IT GOES or gets replaced. Recent example would be an olive green (remember olive green and gold?) plastic soup ladle. I threw it in the recycle bag and bought a new, more modern one. The old one still worked as a soup ladle but it brought back very bad memories and who needs that? This is similar to the question posted by @jcriverside awhile ago.

    My number one reason for a messy house is I don’t put things ways. Usually that is due to a hectic schedule. I have to leave before there is time to do that. I already get up super early. I don’t get adequate sleep as it is. I will try a different approach geared to my issue.

    My flow chart is much more simple.
    Do I _remember_ it ?: Yes ---> Keep it
    Do I _remember_ it ?: No ---> Throw it away
    Just before opening a box that has been sitting in a closet for years, I will try my best to remember what is inside. Anything that I cannot remember is junk that I do not need because I haven't used it or even thought about for years.
    Some things are exempt, of course. I did not throw away my high school year book, even though I had completely forgotten about it.

    Asking for idea: I'm great at organizing (as autistic, love order, categorizing etc.) but what I struggle with is sizes of european apartments. I have quite a lot of storage in each room, but as they are each small, I'm unable to put all stuff of one category in one place. So I end up with having going-out clothes in my bedroom, staying-in clothes along with underwear in my laundry/powder room, and accessories in my office. Some of my coats go into the hall wardrobe, but it can't contain my outer wear sweaters. My shoes are in this wardrobe as well, but there's not enough space for boots which I need to keep under my bed. It makes me so anxious, I hate this. I have some space left in each wardrobe so I often move stuff around to iterate best solutions but it's never perfect.
    I mean, the laundry room + underwear is great because it aligns with my flow of the day. I use powder room as my own main bathroom and go to shower only as a "guest" to the other one, so I take off clothes - put it to the washing machine - wash either in bidet or hop in the shower and come back - put on undies and pyjamas - in the morning brush my teeth, change clothes to home wear, and so on; I rarely go out and then I just go to my bedroom and play with "serious clothes. But getting ready to go outside is a nightmare as I literally need to tour the whole apartment to get dressed and ready.
    I love having a lot of stuff because I like to have an opportunity to live creatively, choose things. I don't feel overwhelmed as long as I'm indeed organized. If anyone has a solution for this, unless getting rid of 2/3 of my things, help!

    • @PoshPennies
      @PoshPennies  Рік тому +2

      That would stress me out too 😅I don't know if this would work in your situation, but one thing that really helps when you're tight on space is to do seasonal rotations (remove all fall/winter stuff in the spring/summer and vice versa). When you are low on space, it's important to prioritize access to what you need and put other things away. If you don't want to get rid of anything & you are relying solely on the built in storage and wardrobes in your apartment and you're finding it's not enough, you may want to consider getting additional storage to help you streamline the things that stress you out most 🙂

Their excuse it this and that and these and those could be, may be, are work some money or someone could use it.... yet, year after year, after year, after year.... the things that are allegedly worth money can't even be found. When the kids still lived at home I used labels everywhere. I even wrote on the fridge shelves with a sharpie. It comes off with alcohol. There was no excuse of not knowing where things went after that. I ended up needing a 15 minute everyone tidy during the evening. If you don’t participate then you don’t get screen things- like video games or internet. That was a great motivator.

    I don’t struggle with mess as I’m a bit OCD and don’t have lots of stuff. Everything I own does have a designated place. Even my junk draw has a cubic divider that segregates everything nicely. However, it’s not pretty, just tidy and organised. The issue I have is how to make boring, essential items, tools, toiletries, food stuffs look nicely organised within cupboards and look attractive. I don’t like the clear container look, I like the “you don’t seem to own anything” look! 🥴wowsers!! 🤣
    There’s this massive blue whale made of silver at this little boutique gift shop I pass sometimes. It’s fabulous. It’s expensive. It’s been in the window at least 2 years. I want it!!! something that stalls me is like... not knowing if i should recycle something or throw it away. i feel guilty throwing things away that shouldn't be in a landfill, but each city has such specific recycling rules and i find it confusing and overwhelming so i just put it all in the basement. LOL.

    • @PoshPennies
      @PoshPennies  Рік тому +2

      I felt the same overwhelm when we first moved to our new place! So what I did was I went on the town's website and printed out all their rules, including the list of all the different things that are recyclable. Then I taped it to the inside of a kitchen cabinet to check whenever I wasn't sure. After awhile you remember everything and it becomes easy :) Even still, a lot of towns and cities don't make it easy, I agree - for example they recycle glass and soft plastics where we live, but they won't pick them up curbside. They expect people to collect that stuff at home and then take it to the dump to recycle, which realistically is a huge ask and most people just won't do it. So it ends up in the landfill.

    • @juliehughes1258

      @@PoshPennies I did the exact same thing. My city's website is very helpful, even providing alternate locations to get rid of e-waste and large construction material. I found this helpful but you seem to be throwing shade at Marie Kondo; The reality is you are just summerizing what she wrote in her book...

    No such thing as unnecessary duplicates of things you expect to go through - especially in these tough times. ^^
    EVERYONE should have enough food & emergency supplies in their house to last at least 3 days. 2-4 weeks is ideal.
    You never know when a tornado, earthquake, flood or other common disaster in your area will hit & you'll be SoL especially if it's something like a tornado or earthquake that devastates societal & governmental infrastructure - like hospitals & other emergency services.

    I like your content because you don’t act like a perfect know-it-all master of the topic, you are just a human who knows stuff and can share with us, but you’re never arrogant.🫶
