The Fearless Myth

  • Shalom, today we delve into the pervasive myth of fearlessness among men, dispelling the misconception that true courage exists in the absence of fear. Consider David's confrontation with Goliath-a display of remarkable boldness, yet David was not devoid of fear. His vulnerability is palpable throughout the Psalms, where he openly shares his fears. In fact, there are moments, like in Psalm 55:5, where his fear nearly overwhelms him. This teaches us that courage isn't the absence of fear, but the mastery of it.
Cultural stigmas inaccurately label men who acknowledge their fears as weak, consequences of which can be destructive and even fatal. We'll explore how fear, when properly understood, can serve as a beacon, guiding us towards wiser, more considered choices. This conversation highlights the genuine nature of bravery. Join me as we learn to process and overcome our fears, particularly emphasizing how fathers can exemplify this wisdom to their sons. Shalom.

Jason, I’ve learned so much from you. Thank you for being such a healthy role model for men today. I still struggle daily, but with God as my guiding light, the battle is already won. Thank you, and praise the Lord for giving you a platform to help others 🙏🙌✝️

Reminds me of what Cus said about fear. Fear is like fire, it has to be controlled, without it we’d probably die but if you can control it you can use it to your advantage. But if you don’t, it’ll destroy everything around you.

    This is so true.
My husband and I are passing this on to our sons, that courage does not mean the absence of fear, but opposing it. Often the greatest courage is asking for help, showing feelings, saying no when others are pressing... 💕💕💕

When I was 14, 5 boys not from my neighborhood tried to jump me and a friend of mine at the time. They surrounded us and came off as if they were playing. I knew something was wrong so I ran to get from being surrounded. My friend had to run to as he was surrounded. Because of that the 5 boys and my friends laughed at me. My father's words were, "son don't run". I never believed any of them and remain firm that I did the right thing.

Thank you so much sir, I just sent you a message on instagram but i just want to commemorate you on your expertise and effort that God has instilled in you, helping and changing the stereotypical narratives that mislead us for too long. Fear is an illusion of the mind, but the mind itself can be trained to attain fear as a resourceful guide giving liberation in life’s pursuit. God bless you all

The Gentleman made some good points, let me add to his exposition:
In the book of Proverbs when the "Fear of the LORD" is mentioned, FEAR (Biblical meaning: "GREAT REVERENCE" ) and fear (worldly meaning: a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc ), have two different meanings.
FEAR (Biblical meaning: "GREAT REVERENCE" ) in the BIBLE means "GREAT REVERENCE",
"REVERENCE" means; a feeling or attitude of deep respect tinged with awe; and veneration. Synonyms: esteem, honor
fear (worldly meaning: a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc) as in the world meanings is as follows: a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid.
fear (worldly meaning: a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc) is a small component within FEAR (Biblical meaning: "GREAT REVERENCE" ),
Let's example this: If you have a "FEAR (Biblical meaning: "GREAT REVERENCE" )" of the LORD you will come across situations that will bring about "fear (worldly meaning: a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc)" This is why we have the WORD of the LORD to lean on such as "PROVERBS" which is WISDOM that supports good decision making on various complicated life situations in particular situations that prompt "fear (worldly meaning: a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc)".
So yes you should never be fearless in the higher arching meaning of the word because all Disciples should have FEAR (Biblical meaning: "GREAT REVERENCE") of the LORD.
And yes, when you come across fear (worldly meaning: a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc), you should be honest with yourself and/or the LORD to admit you are fearful, you don't have to admit it to anyone else.
You can use wisdom to avoid that fear (worldly meaning), &/or be courageous and overcome that fear (worldly meaning: a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc). Courageous does not mean being without fear, it means overcoming that fear.
You don't have to risk your life in overcoming fear (worldly meaning: a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc), there is nothing dishonorable in doing so. Yet if you want to challenge yourself to be more courageous, KUDOS!
Some people have a fear (worldly meaning: a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc) of flying and they courageously overcome it.
The BIBLE repeatedly uses the word OVERCOME, numerous times. POWERFUL word indeed (in my YODA voice lol).
In fact, just being a Disciple of Jesus Christ is a courageous act in this world where there is an evil one.
Every day as a Disciple of Jesus Christ you overcome fear by spreading the Good News when called upon & standing courageously in testimony to his Divnity in all squares, Public or Private, sometimes in extremely precarious situations. You overcome this fear (worldly meaning: a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc) with this "FEAR (Biblical meaning: "GREAT REVERENCE" )".
Where I gently disagree on A point with this gentleman, we all should aspire to be Super-Heros, in fact standing with JESUS by default makes you a SUPER HERO. All the Apostles except for the WOMAN in JESUS's life, were felled initially by fear (worldly meaning: a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc). Yet, they all miraculously overcame
this fear (worldly meaning: a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc), & proceeded to enact JESUS's GREAT COMMISSION & became the Greatest change agents on behalf of JESUS, his CHURCH & his WORD, that conquered the post-ROMAN world.
Three attributes define the APOSTLES: COURAGE, OVERCOMERS, and SUPER HEROS.
Your act of courage does not have to be of great scale like these apostles, though it can be, JESUS said "YE Shall do Greater things Than I". It can be just for being a rooted disciple in your beliefs when the whole room is antagonistically in disagreement with you and your discipleship &/or just helping your fellow brother with something &/or as simple as helping an elderly lady.
There is no rhyme and reason concerning courage, "DO", & exemplify the fruit of the Spirit "WORKS".
in a world where abortion is still active, innocent babies are being murdered, racism is still running rampant and world hunger is still an incredible monstrosity and incredulously in the UNITED STATES, the richest and most HYPER SUPER POWER on Earth,
let us not forget that what makes a SUPER POWER a SUPER POWER is its people, or its "SUPER HEROS"
There is a popular saying that "all evil needs to win is for good people (SUPER HERO's) to do nothing",
let me Biblize this saying by rephrasing it because there is no good person except for JESUS,
"all evil needs to win is for Disciples (SUPER HERO's) to do nothing."
Do Good when possible, when confronting sin have "FEAR (Biblical meaning: "GREAT REVERENCE" ) of the LORD.
DO SOMETHING, and be a HERO. AMEN AMIN
"This is realist stuff I evaaaaaaa WROUGHT, up in the STUdioooouuu lol"

Wrong...fear has 2 definitions. "Fear" of the Lord is different than "fear" of abandonment (for example).

Psychopaths are fearless or at least are actually very close to being fearless as their emotions of fear are either nonexistent or very blunt- fleeting so they last only 1 second or less. It's hence not a myth, it is only a myth for non-psychopaths.

Pusillanimous is an adjective that means lacking courage or resolution, or marked by contemptible timidity. For example, you might describe a student who is too afraid to speak out against a bully as pusillanimous.
Thanks Jason for this wonderful teaching. I strive to model an example of real manhood with my son. I allow him to express his emotions to me without judgment.
