    Man I would wear a helmet too. Kick-back usually comes straight back or straight down. Head and legs are very vulnerable when using a chainsaw, I wouldn’t hole heartily trust the safety handle of the chainsaw b/c your not always in perfect conditions for it to work. Just trying to help people not get hurt.

    I waited until the day after my accident. I have been using the saw over 50 years. Like you said it was a split second. To be honest, I don’t even know what happened. Lucky for me it was just skin deep and 13 stitches fixed it up. I will wear them from now on, even if it’s hot!

    The danger gets worse over time , as the more tired you are , the less aware you are .
    Chaps or no chaps , take a brake still is key to not slipping a chain into your leg .
    Once bar and chain hit the chaps your 99% replacing the bar and chaps , the price of no leg .

    • @OldSchoolMillennial
      @OldSchoolMillennial  2 роки тому +1

      That's a good point to take breaks. You never want to push it with chainsaw in your hand.

    Hey Glenn, glad to hear your buddy randy is ok! I, myself always wear chaps gloves boots and eyewear when bucking/cutting firewood or felling. They’re definitely must have items in the field. I also always carry a good first aid kit. I had an accident once where i split open my left thumb pretty good using my Corona pruning hand saw limbing some small branches at my property up in the mountains. there’s no cell service up there and the nearest hospital is over 2 hours away, so taking proper precautions is an absolute must. Thank god I had the first aid kit. Changing the topic, wouldn’t the ms170 you got be a better choice in regards about overall fatigue than the 261 for small wood?

    I recommend that if your cutting you have at least one CAT tourniquet they are easy to apply to yourself. I have attended calls where self-application has saved a life.

    Great video. Question. Is that a Texas thing, calling Chaps “Schaps”. Sounds pretty cool to this Canadian

    • @OldSchoolMillennial
      @OldSchoolMillennial  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks, Bill! You know, I've never thought of this until you asked. I just looked it up and Chaps in Spanish is Chaparreras and that is how you pronounce the first part (Shap) of that word in Spanish. It could have something to do with why I pronounce it this way. Believe it or not I became fluent in Spanish several years back. Either way works and gets the point across. Good question.

    Never felt the need for chaps, cut trees everyday. I look at operating a saw similar to operating a firearm. Always aware. Accidents happen when you get complacent and don't pay as much attention as you should.

    Had a guy tell me one time " A $100 pair of chaps is way cheaper than a visit to the E.R" so with that in mind I won't even start my chainsaw without my chaps on.

    • @OldSchoolMillennial
      @OldSchoolMillennial  2 роки тому +1

      Exactly!! Sure, if the chainsaw hits them, they'll be damaged and need to be replaced, but that is a small price to pay for the use of your legs!

    Great reminder of the importance of safety gear! I’m glad your friend is OK. Safety footwear is also a must. My dad has had a saw slip and cut through his leather boot down to the steel toe. I once had a tree I was bucking up on a hillside roll uphill and pin my foot because I had misjudged a limb that was pushing it that way. Thankfully my Dad was there to safely cut the tree to free my foot. My 8” leather steel toe boots enabled me to walk away without injury. Boots, chaps, gloves, eyewear, and hearing protection are non-negotiable for me when running a saw.

    Just cut my leg today, hit the knee cap which saved my ass, only 18 stitches and a few bone fragments, 5 subcutaneous and lucky number 13 on the skin…wear the chaps…and make sure you have health insurance.

    I was cut in the leg by a chainsaw kickback accident when I was 17 years old some 49 years ago. I was not wearing chaps at the time and the injury was severe. I was not even the person operating the saw but was obviously too close to be safe. Back then, I didn’t even know chainsaw chaps existed. I now ALWAYS wear chaps. They are a VERY CHEAP insurance policy. I cannot encourage you guys and gals enough to always wear a pair when operating or in close proximity to a saw in operation. They are worth every bit of what they cost. Besides they are much less expensive than walking through the hospital emergency room doors and a lot more comfortable as well.

    Thank You for putting this video out.
    I HATE it that Randy was injured, and I cannot imagine anyone getting cut by a saw! I’ve known friends and family members that have, so i guess I have been fortunate. I’ve taken stupid chances myself, and only started wearing chaps last few years. I have always worn hearing protection, and almost always a pair of gloves. I invested in a proper Husqvarna Forestry helmet a couple of years back, to deal with my having to cut up a bunch of storm damage. I have had several ‘hits’ to face and head, from chips, and a few briar branches, to limbs that fall down over me, or spring back unexpectedly, and the Husky did its job. I will not go into the woods without it. I have to work on an incline, so i recently picked up a good pair of logger boots, with steel toes.
    Having said that, Randy’s Cowboy hat looks good, but unless it’s an approved hard hat, it wont protect him. I am hoping he has at least foam ear plugs in? He needs to at least have that, or better yet, the ear muffs like you wear. Please consider the Forestry helmet. Like you said, anything can happen. Stay safe! Peace 👍🙏😊

    I learned long ago watching my dad to be careful when using a chainsaw because he was bucking up a log and wasn't paying attention and he got his jeans really good,luckily he only nicked his jeans and then spent an hour lecturing me on being safe with a chainsaw. So when the time finally came for me to get my first chainsaw I went to get me some safety equipment and that's when I first learned about chainsaw chaps. I've never had an accident like my dad did that day so long ago but that doesn't mean anything because they are called accidents for a reason . My equipment list for when using my chainsaw is my forestry safety safety helmet (can't count how many times this has save my noggin),my chainsaw chaps and a good pair of quality gloves.
