    The beginning of "The Legend,"
Mr. Steve Clark! He composed this entire song at only 18 yrs old! That is INCREDIBLE TALENT!

This was one of the songs that amazed their would-be manager. He told Steve "You are the sound of Def Leppard, your playing is unlike any other I've ever heard, you'll be the reason this band becomes famous!" And he was right.

  • @MamaofaWrestler

When Mutt Lange realized how unique Steve's sound was, he knew he had struck GOLD. He envied Steve so much, because Steve's composing and guitar playing were a sound that was never heard before. That's why MUTT spent so much time on them, he was no fool, he saw $$$. That's also why he always included his name on the song credits. Pure Greed.

I can never listen to Bringing on the Heartbreak on the radio without instantly hearing Switch in my head. It was the most profound reintroduction of this song like it was always ment to be this way and I will forever hear it this way. Happy belated Heavenly Birthday Steve your are still greatly missed.

Also, and yes Steve is missed, I forgot what Joe says now before the solo of Armageddon It, but in my head, it’s always: « Come on Steve, hit it »

1983 Def Leppard Pyromania tour. Krokus was the opening act for Leppard. This was my first time to attend a Def Leppard concert.

My dad saw them on the early US leg of the tour. They were not yet the headline -- they were opening for Billy Squier. But everyone was there to see Def Leppard.

@@DefLep4Eva1995 I attended a Billy Squier concert because the classic rock radio station in Arkansas was broadcasting his songs. I was angry! to this day I refuse to listen to Squier. I went backstage to meet Def Leppard Hysteria tour, before the show. I have attended every DL show possible.

Cape Cod Colliseum, June '83. Gary Moore, Krokus and the headliner... Def Leppard. It was rescheduled due to Joe Elliot's throat infection. It was the first day of summer, school was out and one hell of a good time. Perfect start to the summer of '83.

Its crazy they played in Rapid City South Dakota i was going to be a junior in High School that was an awesome night left there and went to the fair that was also going it was even a weekend no bands played the weekend. That place was packed to the gills and they absolutely killed it.

Here's another MUTT secret: he criticized Steve and shamed him in front of the whole band when they were recording Hysteria. But Steve was THE composer of ALL of all the songs except two? If it weren't for Steve, Def Leppard would've gone bankrupt, remember how they owed money and they needed to sell over a certain amount of the Hysteria Album to get them out of debt? So basically, STEVE saved the band from going under. Was this specific fact ever made public, that Steve saved the band? Nope. Mutt wouldn't allow it.

First time I saw these guys they opened for Billy Squire in 82. They were raw and it was fantastic. Didn't like the following techno rock added (live) following pyromania but still fun shows. Won't forget that first show straight through the board and amps. This video might have been from that year in fact

    Sorry, I can't resist.
    2 facts:
A.)Mutt Lange was a heavy alcoholic.
B.)On the Hysteria album, Mutt tried to dub out most of Steve's parts on the specific song "Hysteria." NONE of the song is Steve. Phil didn't even know.
Neither Steve or Phil didn't find out until the album was released and they heard it for the first time. Listen to the song in concert and compare it to the album version. You'll be able to tell the difference. But in the performances in concert, that's Steve you hear, and that's why the song sounded much better live. MUCH BETTER!
These are true facts. And it's very sad that Steve was the ONLY victim of Mutt's criticisms.....It gives us an answer as to what caused Steve's increased drinking over time. The reason Steve hated recording was because of MUTT. MUTT would accuse him of playing sloppy and off key, yelling at Steve "you're drunk!" But he never was. However, since his alcoholism had gotten worse over time, this was why he started having the "shakes." He had to drink 2 or 3 shots of vodka in the morning to stop the tremors. It worked. And it certainly didn't make him drunk! Steve was NEVER drunk when he recorded or played live. He made a vow to himself to never do that. And when they toured, Steve's cravings for alcohol were very decreased because playing in concert, doing live performances, was the most vital thing in his life, because he was free to play without Mutt around. He was so happy. Joe once made a comment that Steve hated touring, and Steve got angry at him because out of all of them, he was the one who loved being on tour. He dreaded when the tours ended. So to distract himself, he'd immediately start writing songs for the next album.
Where did I get all of the information I've posted: within the last 5 years, I've been able to be backstage before concerts of bands from the same era that are trying to tour again to have the success D.L. has experienced. My daughter's husband is in charge of certain very big venues so I've been lucky to tag along. I've brought up D.L. and asked so many managers and set managers about Steve. I've never had anyone say anything negative about him. Everyone loved him. But the conversations about the memories of Steve would always eventually change to them saying how sad it was that Steve was hated by Mutt and was very paranoid when Mutt was around. No, I've never heard any of this backstage at a D.L. concert, I've never even seen them in concert! Pregnancies, College, working as an RN had all prevented that when Steve was still alive. I have no desire to see them since then. I can't even watch videos without crying! And I promise anyone who has read my torturous long posts, lol, that I am NOT lying. R.I.P. sweet Angel Steve.
