I think they mistake boats amd the people on it as another whale species and their babies...in whale world there are only ocean specimen, but because they are social animals in general, they come looking...I would love to know what goes through their minds when they keep watxhing people on boats...it's still beautiful how they behave yes😍
I found myself smiling at this without even realizing it. To think of the horrors that we inflicted on this species and still do in places even today. What an amazing experience to witness.
Maybe we could install permanent back-scratching/Barnacle removing floating platform-stations where whales could come for a scratch either by rubbing against the thing or humans with big bristly brushes on hand. This could go a long way into establishing a friendly relationship with a creature who has every reason to fear us and also a means to study interaction and communication with them. Amazingly enough, they sure seem to enjoy human attention and seek it out but I think they are trying to get us to help them but we don't quite get it..
purrrrson I was thinking The same thing what about a rake you know that old fashioned metal ones that rake up the leaves not the short nose rakes that break your nose when you step on it
I’ve been trying to think of a way to tell people something like that! We need to design a tool that will remove the barnacles while scratching them. As often as the same whales come to some of the boats that are out there everyday on these tours, I think it would be awesome to be able to do something for them in return; like the sea turtles!
I was thinking some hard plastic blade on the underside of the boats that might help scratch off the barnacles but not cause any problems steering the boat.
The world cemented in a not great place but it comes from a much worse and more brutal time. Its easy to forget that. How far we have come and how far we have yet to go as a species.
The only problem is that they made them easy target for their main predictors. Just imagine a Japanese whaler encounter. Wouldn't be nice like this. Very stupid of the whales watchers.

Then as I put the interruption behind me to enjoy what remains of this incredible encounter with this beautiful, larger than life creature, I hear, "You stink.". I couldn't believe my ears. Nobody else is talking loudly (or at all, really), an experience such as this calls for reverence and appreciation. Not because that's "the rules", but because it's a rare privilege to be there with this magnificent, gentle, giant far away from the hassles, noise and litter that acompany our daily lives. We all make mistakes, but MAAAN...if I had been on the boat with her, I would be steaming mad at her for spoiling the magic of the moment. I hope to one day be so privileged.

If you ask the Japanese they say it is for “research”!? There is no need for any research to cull thousands of whales annually. Also, do they have any new findings to present? Maybe whalers need to actually read a few other studies related to whales and their intellect and emotional intelligence. I also don’t support the idea of it’s “tradition”. I just get so mad and upset that these beings are being hunted and brutally slaughtered. I wish people would understand that just because we are the top of the food chain doesn’t equal killing everything. Ecotourism is proving to be waaay more profitable. As far as eating the meat, whalers harvest a few choice parts and most of the remaining whale is ground into animal feed. Additionally, it has been found that the meat is no longer safe to eat in any quantity, due to pcbs and other pollution. End Rant. Sorry I had to let it out!!😬

As the other guy mentioned, there are protection acts, but honestly a nice pet wouldn't hurt them unless the boat propeller was too close to them, and a lot of whales do seek human interaction, and enjoy it.
