Lucifer's Friend - Ride The Sky (1971)

- Lucifer's Friend is a German hard rock band, formed in Hamburg in 1970 by guitarist Peter Hesslein, singer John Lawton, bassist Dieter Horns, keyboardist Peter Hecht, and drummer Joachim Reitenbach. The group was an early practitioner of heavy metal and progressive rock;[2] they also incorporated elements of jazz and fusion into their music, especially in their fourth album Banquet of 1974.[3][4] Beyond heavy metal, the band has been cited, too, as one of the pioneers of doom metal, helping to define both genres due to their heavy sound and dark oriented lyrics of their debut Lucifer's Friend of 1970,[5] and returning to their roots in 1981 with Mean Machine, although more influenced by speed metal.
RIP John Lawton.

I have never heard of these guys and I have been into rock / metal for 45 years! This song is fantastic - we need more horn players in the world of rock!
Not hard to miss a West German band that started in 1970 and quit in 1982 and what was the change you found a vinyl from this band if you did not live in West Germany ?

Igual nunca escuchado esta banda y esta genial y soy rockero desde los 9 años
I used to play music in the hobby shop I worked at in the late 80's-early 90's. I was listening to the Styx-Man Of Miracles album and a guy who can only be described as Charles Manson's twin asked if it was Lucifer's Friend. It was a bit strange, but i went out and found some used records. Whatta band! I later got a few CD's before they went out of print and/or got to be hundreds of dollars. RIP Lawton, Horns and Rietenbach from this original lineup.
We wouldn't have such a popular French horn metal scene today without these guys!

As a certified American Horn collector I can verify that is a French horn.

Thank god for UA-cam. All the years of listening to classic rock stations and we only got to hear the same 100 songs over and over. Even the bands we loved only had the hits played. I’ve discovered so many great bands. Bang, Elf, Fanny, Sir Lord Baltimore, Budgie, and so many more.
Thanks for listing those, I have more music to check out now. There's so much more the radio could be playing. Sometimes you get lucky with college radio but they're few and far between.
@Kevin James I watch a UA-cam series called Sea of Tranquility and the hosts name is Pete Pardo. Gentle Giant is his favorite band. He is always talking about them. I have started to listen to them. They are amazing musicians. They play extremely complex arrangements. Really good stuff. You should check out this youtube channel. The guy is really knowledgeable and talks about a lot of the lesser known 70’s and 80’s bands.
Righto! The Smoke on the Stairway to Hotel Freebird is so bad and awful... Here in Houston our "classic rock" station broadcasts on two frequencies! Cox is too lazy to have two different formats. I grew up loving the radio as a kid but now it's dead to me. I was fortunate enough to have an old girlfriend that introduced me to the likes of Budgie and Frank Marino! Rock on! 🤘
Same 100 songs, more like same 28 songs
Yes! It’s the only place to hear Fanny, and that’s how I arrived here. 🥰

+With a band name such as Lucifer's Friend......I doubt he'll be where you think he is. That is....unless he truly repented later in life. This ain't no game down here, folks. Make your choice.
@@joelewing4498 what's your point? It's just a name. People get bent out of shape for this. Lastly we don't need self righteous religious people judging. Obviously you do not know the history of the band nor of Mr. Lawton.

@@stevenmurray600 Steven, if you were a Black man for instance, and the band's name was "Ku Klux Klan's Friend"....wouldn't you pass judgment on that band? So don't tell me that "it's just a name". As far as "passing judgment"...I can't "pass judgment"....because to do so would mean that I have the ability to render a punishment or levy a fine against those that I supposedly "pass judgment" on. I cannot. What I DO have....and most for--real Christians DO have is what is known as righteous indignation. And BTW.....you, me, everybody in the world uses "judgment" every single day to maneuver their way thru this Earthly life as safely as possible.

The best voice for heavy metal I have ever heard!
Holy crap! What a voice!

2nd Viewing: " Do French horns really belong in metal?"
3rd Viewing: " This is f*cking awesome."
That's not metal-its Heavy Metal. There is a difference.
They do when they're played like that!
On the 'studio album version' the guy on the french horn plays it perfectly. This version is goofed a bit. But that's ok. This was still in the 'experimental innovation era'. The best era without "overly perfect everything".
THAT french horn does, sounds like a rampaging demon elephant! I want one
@Steve Schroeder you could tell that drummer was stoned
Now this what I call good clean wholesome music for the entire family.
